It was easily worth twice that to stop City anouncing both Robinho and Berbatov on the same day.

He's not actually played that well the last couple of games in my opinion, but he's scored two goals. Which is good, because his rate desperately needed to improve. Hopefully we'll get the performances too. You look at how Rooney played last night - how often has Berbatov been that influential in a game? And personally, given what I saw of him at Spurs, and the quality of player we think he all is, he really ought to be not just putting that kind of dominating display in, but consistently
He's been nursing an injury. He started off the season really well, just wasn't scoring consistently. Now he's not playing anything particularly special, but has grabbed 2 in 2. Hopefully he can combine the two now and start putting in performances and goals. I honestly think that if we can get past our injury troubles and we can start playing a settled side, we'll start seeing the best from Berbatov.
I haven't watched last nights game yet but agree Berbatov was well below par in his previous start.
If what SAF said about his injury is true then it's no surprise that his form has dipped in recent weeks. Hopefully a couple of goals in games in which he didn't play well will give him a boost and kick-start a hot streak to match Rooney's.

6 goals in 14 starts so far this season. Not as bad as people might think.
Berbatov played very well last night.
But take a look at the games he's started, compared to the games he's come on. It's not a coincidence.
That's all very well Elvis, and we've been making these excuses for a year and a half now. At some point I'd really just love him to show the form I frankly expected on his signing. I'm at the point I really don't think it's ever going to happen. Thankfully we have enough top class players that we can compete at the top. I think Berbatov's form would truly be put into context if we hadn't had Rooney during his time here
On paper that looks ok but 3 of those goals were when the matches were wrapped up already, 3rd and 4th goals. And I can't really think of an occasion when we've won a tight game because of some piece of magic hes done to set someone up. Rooney scores and creates goals when it matters, Berba hasn't been doing that.
I wouldn't go that far, he was frustrating for large portions, particularly in the first half.
Not excuses, facts. Rooney started the season well, then had a spell of games where he was nowhere to be seen, and now he's hitting his stride again. As I said, Berbatov had a fantastic start to the season for us, and was unlucky not to have scored a few more than he did. Is he a Ruud type goalscorer? No, he never will be. Eric Cantona wasn't prolific. He's very good at what he does though.

So? Should we discount half of van Nistelrooy's goals because they came when we were a couple of goals up? Ronaldo's too?
Berbatov came on against Wolfsburg earlier in the season and transformed the match. He scored a brilliant goal against Sunderland when we were 1-0 down and the team was tumescent. He scored against Bolton in the 91st minute last season to win us the game. There's many examples of him doing well in a tight match. Won us a game last season against Boro too.
Why do people bring up Cantona in these discussions, and think in anyway it does Berbatov a favour?!
He was far more prolific than Berbatov, he wasn't that far short of a goal every other game. He scored far, far more decisive winning goals than Berbatov. And he was also about ten times the player
Berbatov isn't fit to stand within 10 yards of the bloke who cleaned Cantona's boots as far as I'm concerned. Showing your age there Elvis I suspect
Fergie has compared Berbatov to Cantona on many occassions.
Berbatov's scored more in his first 50 than Cantona did in his last 50.
I wouldn't argue with you about Cantona scoring far more decisive goals. Cantona was obviously a very special player. My point is you don't have to have a scoring record like a Ruud or a Ronaldo (The Brazilian one) to be considered a success.
Let's be honest, you've never really been a fan of Berbatov, and you've always been extremely harsh on him no matter what he's done. And I don't know why you're bringing my age into it, I've seen plenty of our side between '92 and '97. Obviously it isn't the same as watching it live, and god knows I'd have loved to have seen that team week in week out, but the point still stands.
Cantona wasn't ever about goals.
I suspect a bit of bias against Berbatov there.

Wow, really goes to show how disappointing return we got from him league wise last season. With Burnley, Hull, Portsmouth, West Ham, Stoke & Fulham all still to play at home this season you would hope for him to eclipse that this season
True, given the amount of league games he's missed recently and having not been involved in the Carling Cup bar the last game against Spurs and likewise the last 3 Champions League games it's no surprise he hasn't been scoring goals for fun this season
Lets be honest the guy can really do nothing right with most people on here....its pointless even arguing it anymore...some are just determined to see no good in him.
Berbatov has scored far more important goals this season than those just adding gloss to an already secured win
Giving us a 2 goal cushion against Wigan
First goal against Stoke away
Equaliser against Sunderland
First goal against Blackburn
Giving us a 2 goal cushion against Hull away
Only his goal last night at home to Wigan can be viewed as a not really important goal
Firstly maybe read through my other posts on Berbatov to see that I'm very pro Berbatov
Secondly I firmly believe given his previous seasons for Spurs and him hitting 20 goals in each the least we could have expected was for him to match that, as it is though SAF has admitted we didn't use him correctly last season. This season he's been in and out of the team due to injuries so again not Berbatov's fault

personally I consider that Berba have to prove a lot considering 30 mil pounds. According to Wiki he played 50 games and scored 15...which doesn't justify his status in our team. We are the best team in the world, but our no. 9 player has to show a lot. I'm looking forward to see if he can satisfy our demand.

He's got 2 in 2 so he's on a run. He's getting his fitness back. It all helps his confidence and going into the second half of the season, a confident and fit Berbatov would be a major plus...for any team.
It's true he's slow but we've pace in other areas that can counter that. I think some people will be upset that the 5-0 with berbatov in the team kinda dispels their theory that he slows us down...

He's a 31 million striker who should be in his peak years. If he's not impressing Fergie enough to start the big games, e.g. vs Barca in Rome, then something is not right, either with the player or the way the manager is using him. Based on his form at Spurs, the assertion in the thread title is hopefully correct.
He was decent apart from his shooting and crossing.
Plus Fergie wanted to get Benzema in the summer, I think he really needs to step it up if he's going to be starting for many years to come, 2 goals in two games is going about it the right way though.

This describes a lot of posters on the cafe. There is at least a subconscious desire on your behalf to not see Berbatov succeed, because the general tone from you ever since we signed him has been negativity, negativity, negativity.
Because of this, it's only natural that you don't want to have your own words rammed down your throat.
Some United fans want some players to succeed more than others.
Some people like Nani more than others because he's got all the tools to be a great player even though he hasn't brought it all together, whereas some feel that while Valencia's performing better it's only because he's a lot closer to the final product and his peak will never be as impressive.
You can find similar examples for so many players, O'Shea-Rafael, Carrick-Anderson etc.
Everyone has their preferences. You like your strikers to score goals first and foremost, and everything else comes second. Others feel that influencing the play creatively is equally important as scoring the goals and Berbatov does that better than most.
It's futile trying to say who's right or wrong because it's not about that in football, every single person has their preferences, every single fan has their preferences, every single manager has their preferences. It's just how it is.
I think Berbatov's a fantastic player and I've been very encouraged by his last two games, but it's understandable that you haven't been given he's been missing chances and his general play hasn't been up to his usual level, or at the same level as his partner.
I don't think anyone can say that Berbatov's performed to a level they've expected of him, but I do think that he's visibly improved this season and he's continuing to do so in some important areas.

Well, we were discussing the first half and the general opinion on here seems to be that he had a poor first half.
