Keep a clean shit tomorrow, United is my final bus
Anyone see his debut for Bayern? We fecked up choosing Di Maria over him. Should have signed him from Gremio in the first place, his talent was painfully obvious and instead we insist on him coming over for a trial etc.

Anyway a thread to keep tabs on his development.

I heard that he's been very good for Bayern in pre-season and his competitive debut.

He's only 24 too (25 in September).

Very surpried how good he is and how fast he adapted there. I rememebr him in the CL against us, caused us some problems.

So far he looks like a Willian with end product. Very hard-working.

Why have Brazil ignored him for so long? Only got his first cap in Nov 2014.

Watch his youtube videos from his Gremio days. Honestly, how we didn't sign him is beyond me. A seriously talented player that Fergie could have worked wonders with.

Anyone remember the 'sighting' of him watching us at Old Trafford? I thought that day we were actually about to put things right and bring him in after not following up our early interest. Then again after the trouble in Ukraine and he wanted to leave, I thought now would be the time we might get him. I was disappointed to hear he was our next option after Di Maria. If only...

Thanks for creating the thread, I wanted to do it myself this morning, but then was too lazy and kinda worried I jinx his fantastic form so far :D.

Anyway, here his two big highlights yesterday:
His brilliant assist yesterday:

His Robben-esque goal:

I'm really excited about his signing now after being really underwhelmed when it was announced a few weeks ago. But then, I knew feck all about him besides watching Donetsk about 5 times in the CL.

I remember that. When we got linked with him, i watched his youtube vids. Obviously he looked very good, and i also thought we would snap him up, our interest at that time was real. At Shakhtar, i never watched them much, but was he always a starter? I remember a few seasons ago that he seemed to sit on the bench for a few games, thought that he ddint develop that great. Then we played against them where he really looked dangerous.

Didnt know that he was 2nd option behind ADM, i was surprised Bayern bought him. Cant rememebr them being interested in him, at least no media speculation before. Now he looked great in pre season and yesterday, i really think he is a talented palyer that we could have had previously. I didnt watch him much, a few CL games here and there, but his end product for Bayern is impressive, seems to have adapted very quickly.

No at Shakhtar he was on the bench a lot early on. Think he played more when Willian left. He still played well every time I watched Shakhtar and he got a game. They seemed to rotate their attackers quite a bit.

i've always liked him.. can't believe firmino and robinho started over him in copa america

Looks impressive. Weren't Chelsea linked with him recently too? They've got all the wrong Brazilians.

I think that's because they could only play a certain amount of foreign players. Bernard suffered a lot cos of that.

Robben, Ribery, Muller and Costa for the wings...it's really not fair

He's a very good player, he probably should've moved away from Shakhtar before he actually did.

Playing for Bayern in the German league is like shooting fish in a barrel at the moment. If he played for United he would have a much tougher time to stand out.

Let's not pretend this was the most obvious signing to make...

I doubt he would have been on many wishlists before Bayern bought him and his start to this season.

It's only matchday 1 in Germany and Bayern played Hamburg. In recent years Bayern has always hammered Hamburg so it's no surprise to anyone Costa was able to shine as brightly in that game as he did in preseason. The hype though has little to do with the quality of other Bundesliga teams compared to Bayern but rather with how he played against Real/Spurs/Inter in preseason. So I don't think your point is valid. He hasn't had the chance to show much in the league yet.

He was hardly tearing up trees in Ukraine. Are you saying that it isn't easier to look good when you team is vastly superior to the opposition?

Someone on another website said he sees Costa as a future Ballon D'Or winner.

Someone should have told Shaqiri how easy it is to look great at Bayern. Maybe he wouldn't have to play for Stoke now. If only he knew.

So you disagree that it easier to look good when as a team you are so much stronger than the opposition? Perhaps it would have been better for someone to tell Shaqiri to adopt a more professional attitude and he might not be playing for Stoke right now.

Costa has great heights but as shown during his time in Ukraine he's form is not very consistent. He's had moments of greatness but in the end he has still only scored 5-6 goals per season during his 6 seasons in Ukraine.

If he had been the amazing player some seem to think, there's no way he'd stayed that long at Shakhtar. He might put in a few good performances for Bayern as they dominate but I doubt that he will be a key player.

I think you can judge the quality of an individual in a great and a weak team if you watch him over a prolonged time. I think it's way too early to judge Costa. Not because he plays for a much stronger team now, but because he only had a few appearances for Bayern so far and most of them were meaningless pre-season friendlies.

I do think your comment is nonsense though. I wonder if you agreed with Liverpool fans throwing that kind of nonsense at United players for 2 decades while praising Gerrard. Obviously Costa played individually a fantastic game and showed a lot of talent. It doesn't matter if Hamburg was shit or not to see that this is true.

No. You said something along the likes of "of course it's easy to stand out against Bundesliga teams if you're currently playing for Bayern." I said something along the lines of "he has only played a single Bundesliga game for Bayern. His standout games were in preseason against teams like Real, Inter, and Spurs thus the hype he's currently receiving has very little to do with the Bundesliga. So I don't think your point is valid." I don't think my post said anything about it being harder or easier to look good when playing vastly inferior opposition, I'm not sure why you interpret it that way.

Plus I'd argue that the difference between Bayern and Bundesliga teams isn't any bigger than between Shakhtar and Ukrainian Premier League teams in the time he played there (didn't Shakhtar win like 7 titles in a row?). So if we apply your statement he should have still looked vastly superior then. Also seeing as the Bundesliga is obviously a bit better than the Ukrainian League he should have probably stood out even more in Ukraine. Aaaalso you used the phrase "stand out" in your original statement. I'd actually say that it's a lot more difficult to "stand out" at Bayern than it is at Shakhtar.

@Balu

To the contrary, I actually think a lot of players at United during the Fergie era were flattered by the team.

I do agree that it is too early to judge though.

@Lyricist

You have a good point. I disagree with your conclusion though.

Shakhtar are filthy rich, they are not a selling club. Only way you can get their top players is when contract is ending.

Their not though. They have backing from Akhmetov but the money, which is quite literally filthy, hasn't been that prominent since 2011. In fact, if you look at their transfers, they havn't spent a penny (net) since.

So if Douglas Costa really would have been that good for them, some them would have met their valuation for him earlier.
