Ed has made United into an even bigger commercial/financial giant but during his time there's seems to have be a disconnect to actual football operations. Especially when you compare United to other clubs our size. We seem to let our commercial obligations dictate all other operations within the club. Which to an extent makes sense since this has made us financially untouchable but we seem to lack an identity. Every summer Ed wants a "Galactico" signing but the only one he's actually signed is Pogba. So yes we can afford any player but if we're not bringing them in then what actual good is our commercial success bringing us on the pitch? Clubs like Bayern and Juve seem to have significantly less commercial revenue, yet maintain and structured transfer policy and have found more success. At what point does the United take this away from Ed and make a significant change? It works for Madrid because they bring in World Class players, but it seems in our case we pay World Class fees for players that are just not at that level.
He doesn't choose which players come here, the managers do

Woodward & Co need to look at City's transfer policy and copy it. It is clear since SAF is no longer here, the club's transfer policy is just not working. We are falling behind and other clubs are taking advantage of it. We just seem clueless on how to approach, make deals etc Manchester United seem to pay an absolute premium for any player yet that player will devalue by 50% as soon as they join. Brain scratcher really
And what policy is that? Whatever players Mourinho asked for last summer, he was handed. Even this summer, we all but had Griezmann confirmed by the start of June but for the transfer ban.

Players lose value at this club typically because they're not good enough here, are available for transfer, and the club aren't really concerned about huge fees. I mean, it's not really a 'brain scratcher' to see why a potential Matteo Darmian* sale will go for less than Benjamin Mendy. And in any case, we've certainly improved on this recently -- £20-£24m for Morgan Schneiderlin and £16-21m for Memphis Depay is great business and saw us nearly recuperate their actual fees.

* And even then, were we to sell, I'm very certain we'll get a fair price.

It's not Woody's fault we can't seem to buy top players. He tries. He's willing to put up the dough.

There haven't been many top players move at all in the last few years anywhere either.

I dont get the negative vibes. First, he does not decide who to buy. Second, he brought in some pretty decent, expensive players over the years. Third, not every player we want can be bought. People live in a fantasy world and think we can throw money out of the window all the time. Of course we have to watch our own interest and pay as little as possible for players

Makes it all the more important to sign the right payers at the right age. Nigh on impossible to sign a Bale, Ronaldo, Messi, Iniesta, Neymar, Suarez level of player once they are happily esconced at a top European club with great weather, culture, food and ladieez so we need to be signing them early and getting what we can out of them as we did with Ronnie.

City seem like they might have found one in Gabriel Jesus unfortunately.

Mbappe is the obvious one at the moment and I suspect that his current pricetag will look cheap in 3 years time. Unfortunately he already seems to be bewitched by Real Madrid...we needed to be signing him when Monaco did, and given our size, glamour and wages we would probably have got a few more seasons out of him than Monaco will manage before his inevitable move to Madrid.

Ed will be able to enjoy the rugby this weekend.

I think Ed's m.o now is 'when in a tight corner, call Mino'. But regarding Morata I think we had a cut off figure by which if Real insisted we would end all interest and Lukaku is easy to convince given his closeness to Pogba and Rioila's influence.

He's an animal. So unpredictable.

Wouldn't be surprised if he gets us another one or two players by the weekend (wait... doesn't that make him predictable?).

Ed is clearly back on the tins this summer. Big money signings all round again.

Everyone loves him again now I presume?

Very good description that. It's almost like he enjoy these loops in expectations and popularity among fans. Just when people are about to burn him he pops out of the box with a huge name and he's the king again. I have to admit I was fed up with him to the degree I wanted him out. Now I'd like him to shag my wife, for more than one night.

I'm self-banned from the Transfer forum so this Lukaku thing came as a delightfully unexpected surprise. As far as I can see, though, this could still go a bit Aaron Ramsey. Dread to think what that would do to Woody's rep :(

Just goes to show that he doesn't personally have to be flying all over the place to do deals. Same craic every summer - why isn't he here why isn't he there? He's not stupid lads. He knows his job by now. Lukaku- cracking signing. I hope this doesn't spell the end of our interest in Morata but we also have to stop getting involved with Madrid summer after summer. They are a total soap opera!

IF lukaku story is true( i believe when club says it) then he screwed perez.
Good luck in finding another club which will pay 80 mil for morata

Do you think Lukaku or Morata would have been better? Just curious, putting whoever the first target is aside and looking at them both as future world class number 9s.

I haven't watched Morata anywhere near enough to have an opinion on him. His stats look good last season but scoring goals off the bench is different to leading the line all season long. Otherwise, we should consider targetting Giroud.

Lukaku's age and constantly increasing PL goal tally, year on year, speaks volumes. He seems like a much less unknown quantity. Which is what we need right now.

I said the other day that I was worried we weren't willing to walk away from our primary targets and would continue to go round in circles negotiating. At least it looks like we do have the balls to do so.

The only possible worry now would be what happens if Chelsea beat us to Lukaku? It still sounds like this is a real possibility.

We have to assume player already chose his destination and communicate that to a buying club.

Ed is always at his best when he is on the ground and people start kicking at him. The man needs a bit of time at the beginning to get warm, he is burning currently.

Would be great if he could pull off another signing before the tour, preferably a DM that Mourinho seeks. It will freeze the likely core of the first XI next season.

Let's not be greedy all of a sudden.
