England Discussion | Finish 4th

People really do dislike the English team a lot don’t they. Saying they didn’t deserve it, saying that people shouldn’t be happy after that win etc etc.

This team actually has a lot of likeable players.

I can see how the constant frothing of the mouth waiting for England to fail can get annoying to actual England fans. It seems to go way beyond the banter we’ve seen for Spain etc and go more into the territory of pure dislike.

I love it . It's on a United forum as well so you think they'd at least understand the ABU mentality. Columbia were scum tonight and deserved to go out. I make no predictions about what might happen after this as QF was my only expectation. The fact we have a great chance to go even further is a bonus.

Call me wildly over-optimistic, but I reckon England will make it through to the final.

What an ordeal. I'm never watching football again.

Team looked less confident from the off now it's knockouts. Hopefully they'll have shaken that off for the next game. They fully lost the plot at one point. Got back into it but were still passing it back when there were players in space in the middle further forward, which was infuriating. Just asking to be caught flatfooted on the break, which happened once and nearly cost us.
Sterling was awful, Alli was just nothing and Lingard was struggling to do much. Rashford should've come on earlier.

I think they'll pick things up a bit next round though. Just please don't start Sterling.

Luck over skill every single time. Good that Lingard got his shit spell out of the way. If he's this bad in the first half against Sweden then get him off at half time. This is where Southgate has to respond better.

Sterling's pace and wilyness is just too important for him to be left out.
Definitely. His end product is bad, but his general play is so important because he's like our only player who can dribble past someone, and is so good at shielding the ball which helps when we pass through the lines as he just won't get dispossessed.

It's just people trying to look clever. Like 'look at me, knowing England won't win it. You're all stupid for supporting them'. Odds are in their favour they'll be able to say 'I told you so' so they'll get to feel clever too. Proper lame.

Sterling is fecking gash and has been all tournament. Surely Rashford deserves to start ahead of him. Same with Alli - clearly he's injured and someone else deserves to take his place.

I’m not even English, yet I can’t seem to find any real reason to dislike them this much  The lamest defense anyone can make is the “arrogance of the English fans” which is a nonsense excuse, since the last time anyone was even remotely positive about England was in 2010. You’re honestly right, it is very reminiscent of the ABU attitude.

Yeah they are sad and pathetic. Just ignore them or do what I do, pity them.

It's a United forum, an English club, and we have Lingard, Young, Jones and Rashford in the squad. They should be ashamed.

Wasn’t all that impressed with Sweden against Denmark.

Organised, for sure. But plenty of teams have proven adept when they have men behind the ball. So they're not unique in that sense.

Their finishing leaves a lot to be desired.

It could be a slog, but England can navigate it.
Hard to be impressed with 2 teams who didn't faced each other. Sweden didn't impressed Italy, Netherlands neither, both stayed at home. England is favourite but they better score first.

People need to stop being so critical. There were predictions this team might get done by Tunisia. They've already surpassed what many expected pre-tourney. yes the stars have aligned and things have fallen their way.

Don't act like football IS coming home, but maybe believe football MIGHT come home. It's famine or feast with many, either we're going to win or we're shite. The truth is we're not the best squad here, not the best team. But there are many better squads back in their own countries and we are not.

It can happen, probably won't and Croatia are probably faves to win our side of the draw but who cares. Get behind the team and enjoy it.

This might sound arrogant and misguided but can England potentially rest some players here or at least give Rashford and a few others a starting spot to conserve energy?

It might be a bit of a risk but I reckon it'd be a calculated one.

Talking about a bloody world cup QF

Haha no, that would be insane.

You could make an argument that we've got to the QF and it hasn't even clicked for us in attack yet, imagine if it does against Sweden

I think you can only score through set pieces (or some lucky deflections) against them. But so far this has worked very well for you guys anyways.

I've always had Sweden down as one of England's bogey teams (Brolin, 2002 and 2006 World Cup etc.) and looking up the head to head, England have just 2 wins in the last 15 matches against Sweden, although both wins have been "quite" recent.

The game plan is very simple. Get as many corners as possible and have Harry Kane wrestle with a defender. The ref will call a penalty eventually.

I think it is clicking. Who in the attack is not playing as well as they can?

The improvement to be made is that our defenders need to stop pratting around with the ball so much, and Southgate's bizarre game management needs to stop...imagine if we'd gone out of the world cup with Harry Kane, the top scoring striker of the whole world cup, playing in midfield for the last 45 minutes of the game. His subs were absolutely baffling. As weird as the stuff LVG used to come up with.

Christ this looked like Mourinho presenting himself at Chelsea "Don't want to sound arrogant but I won the Champions League" :D

The dickhead conducting that interview was questioning his credentials to manage a PL club. Jose was entirely justified for suggesting in his limited English that he is a European champion and perhaps the special one. It was Chelsea, ffs who’s only title was in 1955 before they bought subsequent ones.

Seems I wasn't the only one who was worried about our results against Sweden.

Don't think the extra time will make any difference between both teams. Only thing I can see is if England scores first there is a very good chance they will make the Semis.

Believe it or not I watched that presentation live here in Portugal at the time, and I laughed a lot at the time because they clearly didn't knew the guy who was coming in.

Forgetting that Colombia were a bunch of dirty b*stards and the ref gave a yellow for a headbutt - what a game!!!!

Seriously though, it is time Southgate dropped Sterling & only play Alli if he's 100% fit

Well, Sterling, Alli and Vardy certainly have not covered themselves in glory today and Young's injured. All I'm saying is that changing the team is not a no-go and might have the added benefit of keeping England fit.

If all this talk about going for it and being ambitious is real (but keeping their feet on the ground), they should definitely look at the implications for the semi and the final.

At least that's how I'd go about it but I do realise it might look strange/arrogant to most.

It won't make a difference on the day. Its all about performance.

Our midfield really let us down tonight!

The defence was great. Stones and maguire the stand outs.

Kane was magnificiant.

Henderson did ok

The three players we really need to get us ticking sterling, alli and lingard all went missing. Sterling the biggest issue.

Get them flying and we should have too much for sweden.

Vardy looked lively when he came on. Perhaps Vardy over Sterling and Rashford off the bench and whoever stakes their claim best could start a semi should they make it.

If England can beat Sweden they have had a great world cup. For once they look like a team and not a load of individuals. The team spirit, togetherness and mental strength is the best I've seen in an England squad for 20 years.

On the other hand, you just won a WC penalty shootout so...

I also found it interesting Southgate knew about England's poor record against Sweden off the top of his head. It certainly sounds that he's looked into it well before the game.

Rest them for what? Euro 2020 qualifiers? Absolutely not
