England Discussion | Finish 4th

Whatever happens now no one will be laughing at England anymore. They have surpassed any expectations placed on them and done their country proud.

Well done England.
Amen to that. I feel like this has reignited everyone’s support of the national side. I’m already looking forward to Euro 2020 and seeing what this group of players can achieve.

Sweden were rubbish today*. We did our worst performance since we lost against Bulgaria in the WC-qualification. We were TERRIBLE. If we played like this against Switzerland or even Mexico i don't think we would have won those matches.

You started well enough but as soon as we scored I think your players kind of felt 'what do we do now'. They're not really equipped to take the game to the opposition and didn't really press our defenders enough as the game went on. We scored from a set piece which was supposed to be Sweden's strength so I think that knocked the confidence a bit. The quality wasn't really there to take the game to us. You had seen not to foul our players on set pieces but as a result we were very dangerous from nearly all of them.

I'm really happy for England ! hope you will win it..I just dont want to see France winning it and i'll be fine.

They hate everything English but support an English club. :wenger:

Loving the bitterness in here. Did none of you lot cheer when Lingard scored in the fa cup final?
Or Teddy in the cl final?

I’m going to go full Kevin Keegan soon enough, and you never go full Keegan.

I don't hate England at all (was supporting them tonight and happy for them to get to Semis) but you can sort of understand why us neutrals sometimes ''hate" England. Before this WC, they have mostly been one of the most boring team with an inflated ego. The same way I wanted Sweden to go out, it was natural for neutrals to root for England going out. Of course they have done reasonably well, much beyond expectations!

Calm down, they've beaten Panama, Tunisia and a very poor Sweden team (and drawn with Colombia). Any success at this tournament is down largely to having an easy route.

Considering the widespread school of thought on here if you read back was that England would definitely be disposed of by the round of 16 by Colombia, but possibly even before that in the group stages by a not insignificant minority, you can't say that.

But keep moving the goalposts mate, keep squirming. Even if we win the entire thing you'll find a but somewhere.

Ridiculous thing to say. England have been good in the tournament so far and there’s no need to resort to cheeky remarks like this to discredit their results but I reckon you cannot give England any credit.
I'll when they actually play well.

We could only beat whoever we were drawn against. And we've beaten them all ;)

Really proud of the team for making it to the semis, I didn't even think they would get that far and I didn't rate this group of players. I've been particularly impressed with Pickford who has proved pivotal to our success.

Sure Sweden weren't great today but England did their job properly without any panic, which is definitely an improvement from the Colombia game. If they can improve further on this performance or maintain it, I don't see why they couldn't reach the final.

That comes across as so bitter. England weren’t expected to do anything in this tournament, with the youngest squad we’ve had since 1962.

Reaching the semifinals is already a fantastic achievement considering it’s the first time for England since 1990.

Well i saw a team actively not trying to win.

Belgiums depth is proberly better and they were the better team but...the subs and the lack of direct play towards the end showed we was content with the result as it was in that game.

England will play in finals. 8 goals after corners( 5 goals and 3 pens). Can't see how we or russians can stop that. I can't remember when one team was that deadly on set piece. feck, it is really coming home:(

45 year old man on a forum on a Saturday night making sure England fans aren't enjoying being successful in the World Cup. Nice one.

Modric-Rakitic will pass through English lines and create chances for Perisic and Mandzukic.

60-40 Croatia if you win tonight imo. Keep the ball and England will start to flag so less chance to get corners and set pieces.

Henderson versus Modric - Rakitic - whoever else it is is gonna be suicide. We can't play Dier because he's shite. Move Alli to Sterling's position and play Loftus-Cheek or Delph next to Henderson? We've gotta do something because it'll be a complete walkover every time they get the ball, which will be a lot.

I don't like to talk about that game because we can easily lose against russia but if( big if) we play against england, england is huge favourite. Their biggest strength is our biggest weakness. We don't know how to defend corners. Iceland and denmark killed us with long throws for example.
Also england is excellent in defence. Yes, i am scared like little girl now.

I'm actually hoping to face Croatia, because we need to face a team with a tough midfield (we haven't yet). If we win it'll stand us in good heed against the tough midfields of France/Belgium, and if not we probably woudn't have done well in the Final anyway.

Fecking sad how many people hate England. A country that is supremely passionate about this sport beyond all other sports, a country that has suffered painful defeats and close calls for most of its history. Yet people cannot accept the English actually being happy for once. Despite the enormous contribution we’ve made to football on a global scale it’s just too much to accept for us to be happy for a week or two in 30 fecking years. Feck this I’m having another beer.

Can't really see anything wrong with what you've said there.

Comparing the route to the Semis:

England:
Tunisia W
Panama W
Belgium L
Colombia D (W on pens)
Sweden W

Belgium:
Panama W
Tunisia W
England W
Japan W
Brazil W

France:
Australia W
Peru W
Denmark D
Argentina W
Uruguay W

Croatia:
Argentina W
Nigeria W
Iceland W
Denmark D (W on pens)
Russia -

Russia:
Saudi Arabia W
Egypt W
Uruguay L
Spain D (W on pens)
Croatia -

After looking at these it is fair to say you would prefer England's run to the semis than any other team on the list.

Be careful though, if you say anything you'll be accused of being anti-England. You'd expect us to win every game in our list, and apart from that ridiculous game against Belgium that we weren't bothered about (allegedly) we really haven't been tested.

It's easy to get carried away and it has been a good tournament for England but the fixtures haven't been anything too challenging. A bit of realism is needed I feel. Having said that I do hope they do well.

What I don't understand how people can say that 'It's Coming Home' is a sign of England's arrogance.

What the fecking video. The song is basically about how shit England are.

Exactly.

I'm really enjoying the bitterness in these threads.

Keep it up you sad fecks!

Indeed. Always log on for the meltdown.

Is some of this hate down to these people reading too much English media?

I'm sure if you read a lot of Croatian or Swedish media you have many saying they'll win the world cup.

Even in F1 we had Nico Rosberg complaining. Why don't you stop reading English media and read some Danish media then?

To be honest, we can't seem to win, it's either not believing enough, no confidence, to over confidence. I've read all these criticisms on the same day here and elsewhere. I guess we should be glad everyone seems to still want to put their two penneth in about England? It's like we still have an empire and are not allowed to be confident and get criticized when not.

I wonder what the cnut face Maradona is saying about us today?

It's sad how you support a team from England, yet despise the country? Some weirdos in this forum.

I live just on the border ...... the bitterness is relentlessly strong from the Welsh, baffling. English got well behind them 2 years ago. Never got it, especially as most these don't speak Welsh, didn't support Wales 3 years ago, don't support any Welsh teams, have most nights out....not in Wales....basically most of them aren't all that Wales heavily patriots and this isn't the Golden Generation turd hype train.

By the way, I realize English were'n all perfect themselves in 2016....but yeah they generally got behind Wales.

Fair point.
