England Discussion | Finish 4th

I wish England (and United) would just go back to a 4-4-2. With England I would set it up as:

------------------------Pickford-------------------------
Walker---------Stones--------Jones-----------Young
Lingard------Henderson---Dier------------Sterling
------------------Vardy--Kane-----------------------

Lingard will do the goal of the tournament. You read it here first!

I am really looking forward to watch him and Rashford. When Lingard shows up he is amazing, and Rashford always score in his debuts. Time for a goal in the WC debut!

We've tried that for years and failed, why not embrace something different.

I think this England team will prove very difficult to beat.

I think they will exceed expectations and make the quarters or so.

There is experience, youth and talent there.

I’m excited to see if Kane, Sterling and Lingard/Rashford can play to their full potential. If they do, that could be a fantastic attack.

Back to 4-4-2, hell no. Never in a million years again.

Why not? Don't get why all managers copying Conte. 3 at the back is really hard to use effectively.

That's why no one used it in England for 20 years.

It's trendy, it seems most football managers have no mind of their own and just copy each other. When Jose played 4 3 3 with us in 04/05 everyone copied that too.

Atletico play 4 4 2. It depends how you play it and what players you have.

Southgate is just going for 3 at the back as it's trendy imo. He hasn't got a clue.

This England side is very limited and incrediblly mentally fragile. We should setup like a Jose team with 4 at the back imo.

Ultra defensive and don't concede goals. If Tunisia score first it'll be headless chicken time like against Iceland.

I had very slighty raised my hopes of how england would do. Then i watched spain last nighht. So effortless

Anyone having great expectations with this England side is a fool. Average manager leading some mediocre midfielders and defenders. Their attack is decent on paper. I would say anything beyond group stage is a bonus.
Agreed, especially after watching Portugal and Spain show us how football could and should be played! Then theres Germany, Brazil, Belgium, Argentina, not to mention Iceland, LOL! We should make it out of our group, but I doubt we'll win it, but we wont get much further, last 8 at best. Just as long as Uniteds players come home unscathed without injuries, though it seems Rashford has already picked up a knock.

Anyone else sick of ITV (and BBC too but to a lesser extent) referencing England in every broadcast?

They keep updating us constantly, just leave them to it for fecks sake.

Did you even read the full article?

"I saw the game on Saturday night [Tunisia lost 1-0 to Spain] and they were good, but every team at the World Cup is a good team," said Young.

"You have to play against the team in front of you and it is going to be a tough task but we are fully prepared for that.

"Obviously there is more pressure because this is a World Cup but every player in the squad has dealt with pressure. We have to show we can handle that.

Interestingly Vardy said that Hodgson failed to prepare adequately for Iceland and they didn't really have a plan for them. He claims Southgate's approach is much better and the preparation is superior.

Granted that could be the usual justification that player's seek to qualify their current situation.
Pretty at odds with Nevilles statement about Hodgson being excellent and very modernised.

Funny you should say that but I was thinking after the Iceland game today, that a part of the reason they are finding success is because no teams really prepare for that 1980s British style of football they play very often.

It's getting really boring!

I think most of ITV's coverage has been too try hard. I have preferred BBC's more so.

I think the ego of some pundits have blown up too much in the last 10 years .

Jermaine Jenas is one example on the BBC who I feel is always trying to make his point a bit more than the other guy. At the end of the day they all say the same shit but in different ways.

For sure.

It's actually been nice for some of the pundits to disagree though. I know one did with Jenas and he tried to play it off with a 'calm down, calm down' type thing.

Larsson disagreed with Aluko today but he was absolutely right and he just said it's natural discussion.

Makes a nice change from Jamie fecking Redknapp and Souness on Sky spouting absolute bollocks.

It's been a while since I lived in the UK, but I've always despaired at the quality of some of the pundits used to comment/give opinions on matches and it seems things have not improved. Lawrenson, Souness, I cringe when I read the stuff they've said.

Big win. Draw that and we have a crunch tie vs Belgium in the final game.

Not the best of performances in the second half, but didn't look like conceding.

Going forward I would play Henderson with Dier in the middle, throw Alli in front of them and have Rashford or Vardy partner Kane. I can't believe how bad Sterling continues to play for England.

Pulled off the win in the tricky opener. Good. Anyone going for negatives....why? You've seen others, who are vastly superior to England struggle and not get through it at the end. It's a tremendous confident boost, and confidence is everything. Problem is Belgium banged Panama too!

Not sure if anyone has considered why Lampard, Gerrard etc all found it odd and frustrating their international teammates all couldn't wait to go join up with their respective international squads?

I think it's because these players effectively get to go "home".

You're from South America, might have one or two other guys at your club but you're in a different country, different culture, friends are all back home etc. Then friendly time comes around and you can get back to your mates, family, customs and culture. Its exciting, you get to go home.

Whereas if you grow up in England and play in the Prem, then you go to friendlies with the England squad, you're already home but just meet up with other clubs players at St George's.

Just a thought.

The netherlands used to have a lot of dressing room meltdowns, and Croatia just recently have sent a player home for being unproffesional, loads of teams have issues. It's not an England thing.

He looked good

He always does...

Barring injury, I would not start him in the next game but he's a great alternative to Deli in my opinion.

I have a crush on RLC. I can't deny it any longer.

Carling cup run out for him next season?

Have to say find it bizzare Conte thinks Bakayoko is a better player. RLC deserves plenty of premier league starts next year particularly as Chelsea are europa league team now.

Be interesting to see what Sarri makes of him. Conte played him as a striker all of pre-season (he was shocking).

I knew things would settle after 20-25 mins. Pretty normal. It's about still being able to apply a bit more pressure and break teams down when that happens. I think they can do that.

Rashford a bit earlier might've been wiser.
We looked a bit United but better on the ball for the second half. They do generally look confident on it, which is promising.

I'm not sure reaching the quarters would be exceeding expectations with the draw we've got. Semi final and more would be exceeding expectations for me.

Knocked out at the quarters is what I expect.

They'll only grow into this. Performance needs improvement; great result.

Can we stop speaking of Smalling like he's fecking Baresi?
It's bizarre. I would have had him in the squad, Wilshere too actually, but neither of those guys are difference makers or vastly superior to what we have.

Good result - and I would expect us to cruise past Panama. Good opportunity for the likes of Sterling, Rashford and Alli to get their first goals.

Forgot what a mess Chelsea are atm with World cup ongoing. So have I got this right? You're waiting for Conte to resign...even though he's not interested in doing that. Then you'll have to pay a release clause to Napoli for Sarri....even though he's not Napoli's manager anymore.

Pretty much. England will still concede poor goals with Smalling on the pitch, he started the Iceland game let's not forget.

It's all pretty much done. We're paying Napoli less than the clause and Conte is getting a huge payout. Zola back at the club as part of the staff as well which is awesome. By thusday it'll all be done and dusted.

They'll only grow into this.

Don't think so. That misfield was bereft was any creativity. It was individuals who were trying to make things happen. Lingard and Loftus-Cheek at end stages were really turning it on.

By 80th min or so, don't remember who, but there was a player down by right midfield who was waving his arms asking for the ball, but still didn't get it despite him being totally unmarked.

Thought you were alright. Some very good football early on...albeit with some horrendous finishing as well. It's undoubtedly a talented side that's working well together and is enjoying their football, but you can see the hallmarks of that inexperience there as well. Not convinced you're particularly great defensively either.

The Belgium game will test where you're really at, provided both teams want to actually win the group and don't treat it like a friendly. Because for as good as England were at times, Tunisia were fairly crap and while they occasionally made things difficult didn't muster up much footballing-wise.

Feels like the sort of England team that's capable of producing an excellent performance and beating any team in the tournament on its day, but also one that could end up crashing out to Iceland again after a freakishly poor performance. QF's should be your realistic aim. Anything better than that's very impressive; anything less fairly disappointing.

Why do people talk about Southgate like he is trying to revolutionise England? Except for 352 instead of 451 everything looked the same for me. Slow, possession style football around players who aren't very good at playing quick passing. You lack intelligent and good midfielders to play this kind of football so I have no idea why your managers keep insisting on it. I like Kane, and some of the wingers/young strikers, but the team is still built around Jordan fecking Henderson and defenders who aren't very good defenders, and yet they are pretending to be very good ball playing defenders too when they are not. Neither of them are anywhere near close to the likes of Ramos, Boateng when it comes to passing, all of them are closer to Jones than any of them when it comes to passing. They also give away the ball too much for defenders who pretend to be ball playing defenders.
