England Discussion | Finish 4th

We should just keep booting the ball at Kane. It's bound to go in off some part of his body.

Getting a wee bit, tad excited and got my can of grolsch larger ready chilling.
Good to see MU players doing well, Rojo, Lingard, Lukaku and Ashley who is having his best season ever.
I think we should play to win, but hold a bit back i,e no bone crunching tackles. Then winning or losing take off the
likes of Stones, mcguire and Kane.

First we have to get through R16. Let's not run away with the idea that will be easy. Looking at the supposedly tough half then IMO only Uruguay and Brazil have looked reasonable. Nobody is really looking unbeatable.

In the other half (assuming we get through R16) Sweden and Switzerland look very solid. If we get through that then I would not relish Spain or Russia (at home) and least of all Croatia who for me have looked like real possibilities.

At least with the flare teams there is more unpredictability. There will generally be spaces and chances. Mexico can beat Brazil, they can also shoot themselves in the foot.

For me its win the group. There's a lot to said for confidence, momentum and belief.

England would be very silly to do the honourable thing and top the group. They need to engage in a bit of dark arts tonight and make sure they finish second.

Interesting quotes on Guardian article from Southgate press conference yesterday:
Southgate is such an admirer of Germany’s national team, indeed he has trawled through hours of tapes to study their secrets, right down to the small details such as how many free‑kicks the four-times world champions concede in their own half (answer: very few). “We’ve learned an enormous amount from studying Germany, not least last summer, and implemented that,” the England manager said. “Indirectly, they’ve had a big bearing on what we’re doing now.”

Yet he has never wavered from his view that the only policy should be to keep winning, keep building momentum and if Belgium are taking a different view, as appears to be the case, let them feel that way. England, in Southgate’s mind, would be making a dangerous mistake if they started thinking too far ahead of themselves. “We’ve not won a knockout game since 2006,” he said. “So, why we are starting to plot which would be a better venue for our semi-final is beyond me really.”

Southgate talking sense here

Going to be interesting if the game is tied as we get into the last few minutes. If Japan's winning Group H do we pick up a couple of quick yellows - and, if we do, how will Belgium counter? How do we feel about Senegal and Colombia? And will it be the players' choice or will Southgate have a fouling roster prepared in advance?

Is there a chance that if the game is dull, and looking like a draw and both teams field a fairly weak side...that they start kicking the shit out of each other?

As all the stats are the same it goes down to Fifa fair play to decide 1st and 2nd place.

We currently have 2 yellows, Belgium on 3.

The way the Belgium game has gone so far is probably a blessing for England. Before the tournament there was a lot of self deprecation and the playing down expectations. Then England win two games, one comprehensively against a minnow and even people on here think Southgate could take on the United job with his nicely combed hair, gentleman vest and Sherlock Holmes pocket watch. It's still England and Southgate isn't some tactical genius.

Hopefully it’ll temper expectations while putting us in the favourable side of the draw.

I'll come in here and be a dickhead and pretend that England fans want Gareth Southgate to be United manager and suggest all fans think England are definitely going to win the World Cup.

It's coming home.

Neville was half right when saying a team had looked at the pathway to the final and didnt want to win this game. only it was England not Belgium.

half arsed players anf uninspiring subs - they didnt want to win that. shocking performance.

Everything about the England national team and their followers (in particular), their national anthem, their captain, the fan culture just makes me think what a gang of absolute cnuts. I hope Colombia absolutely batter them.

Hard to call England's tournament now. Think without Kane they're a pretty unremarkable side with a defence/midfield that gives away a lot of chances.

Could easily see Colombia or Sweden/Swiss knocking them out so if they make the semis, good on them. Obviously given recent history, everything is a bonus from now on.

So Colombia, then Sweden/Switzerland, then most likely Spain/Croatia is our route to the final. Semis would be nice but it'll be typical England to get knocked out by Colombia (on penalties).

Lolz

Southgate has done a Rodgers (away against RM) there. Can't rest players for games against the big sides. England haven't played really well this world cup, Panama were woeful.

Also think Colombia will beat us, even if James doesn't play due to injury.

Anyone with a brain cell knows that Colombia and Sweden/Switzerland could well knock us out.

You just hope we play hard and the likes of Kane, Sterling, Alli and Lingard turn up. It's up to the players now.

You're a ray of sunshine aren't you

Forgive me for not fancying our chances of getting past the round of 16 now. We've not beaten a side of Colombia's quality in a knockout game in my lifetime. 26 years for God's sake. :wenger:

Hoping for the best of course.

Switzerland will probably make the SF and get trashed by Spain.

Exactly. Anything can happen. We're England, we've lost to much worse teams before, so we could easily make a mess of it. But we'd all have been over the moon if before the tournament kicked off we were given this route to the semi-finals.

Colombia will be a lot more open than Japan would have been, that'll play into our hands. We just need to hope our defence, and more importantly goalkeeper are up to the task.

LOL @ everyone writing off Colombia.
The arrogance is ridiculous. This side of the draw nonsense is embarrassing to listen to quite frankly
Columbia's front four will get in and around Stones and McGuire just as fecking Panama did at times.
What's wrong with a likely win v Japan and then to back themselves v Brazil? Even then Mexico's quick counters gives them a chance in their game.
Where's the giddyness coming from?

Are you from Panama

So now Columbia are easier than Japan? Ok full nonsense mode engaged.

Cue England getting knocked out by Colombia after most of their fans wanted second in the group. Too bad James isn't fit.

Talk of the semis and final.

You know England won't even get past Colombia.

Only just managed to beat Tunisia, battered Panama and England B lost to Belgium B.

It is doing my head in tbh - Columbia are more than capable of beating England and are a much better side than Japan.

England in a good position now.

If we can't beat Columbia, then we'd stand no chance anyway of winning the World Cup. But if we can and do beat Columbia then we have the easiest route to the semis, because Sweden or Switzerland are no great shakes.
