England Discussion | Finish 4th

The England team is pretty young and inexperienced so by your own standard there won't be any big game players then.

Lingard chipped in with goals against the other big 5 last season and performed well.
Correct. How can you be a big game player before actually playing in those big games? What have the 'big' game players Kane and Ligard have won so far? An FA Cup and a league's cup, which are hardly big trophies. They have done feck all in UCL, and have scored against Panama and Tunisia in World Cup.

Wait for them to have some big matches before they get called big match players.
We are like Leicester City fans a couple of years ago. On a roll, with a chance and if a few things go our way then the impossible might happen. Nothing arrogant about that.
Nah, that would be Croats/Colombia on this world cup, or Iceland a couple of years back.

England are United post-Fergie, or Liverpool of the last 3 decades.

Anyway, I am out for real now.

The entire world: English fans are arrogant
English fans: How dare you call us arrogant? We are only going to defeat Colombia and Sweden, reach the semis when we are going to face a tired Croatia/Spain and see what happens there. We are definitely not arrogant.

I am out! See you after the Colombia match.

See you :)

I think the idea some have that the English are an arrogant set of fans is most probably confused with their own bitterness that we’re actually enjoying ourselves at a World Cup.

I like how literally the phrase big game player can be taken. If it's not a final, you might as well call it a dead rubber conference game, those performances mean nowt.

When's the 1700s Bavarian Mountain Football Rules World Cup taking place then?

Took place in the 1700s

Stop trying to claim that the English invented something that already existed and was played before common rules were drawn up. It reminds me of the folk who think that league football began in 1992.

I initially thought you wanted some genuine discussion but you seemingly have a massive chip on your shoulder about England for some reason.

Heads up. You support an English club don't forget .If you hate England so much perhaps you should spin the globe and a pick another?

I'm not an England fan, but I don't see how it's a stretch to say England are favourites against Colombia and Sweden.

Sweden are a bang average side who have nothing going on for them apart from being boringly consistent and conservative in their approach. Even the shittest Holland squad since the dawn of time got 4 points from them(should've been 6 without the ref brainfart).

Colombia sound exciting, but when you look at their squad, how is it better than England? I know football isn't played on paper, but England's squad is stronger than Colombia's if you compare them imho.

Yes England have been shite since 1966, but past results don't mean shit to be honest.

Who invented basketball?

Do you also believe that Leonardo Da Vinci invented airplane?

I don't hate England. I just find the inevitable fallout hilarious. I can support any club I want, thank you very much.

Nobody said we'll beat Colombia. We're not even saying we should beat Colombia. We're merely saying that we can certainly beat Colombia.

Yeah feels weird that so many Utd fans have such a strong dislike for the country in which they're based. Can't really get my head around it.

Surely it's not hard to grasp? As I said earlier, there are least some United fans who were born and bred in England and still dislike the England national team (and its fans) As international football teams/fans go, England is easy to dislike (and I say this as someone who wants England to go far in this tournament)

You come across as very bitter and obsessive over England. Not sure why?

Of course you can support who you like. I just find it odd you'd pick a club that plays in a country you don't like and has an illustrious history of developing England internationals.

I don't think there's much between the sides, but I'd have England as narrow favourites vs Colombia.

FWIW, current bookies odds:

England 11/10
Colombia 3/1

You come across as very bitter and obsessive over England. Not sure why?

The built up and then the fallout is one of the most hilarious things in a tournament, from a non-English fan point of view. I won't lose sleep if England wins the World Cup.

Since I watch football, bar Beckham and Scholes who has been totally misused, that hardly has been the case. Ok, Lingard is now, with Rashford and Jones in the bench but that is it. Rio, Rooney, Carrick and so on were already full internationals before we signed them.

Do you also believe that Leonardo Da Vinci invented airplane?

Football was actively played as a sport long before common rules were drawn up in England in the 1860s.

That's a fact.

Reading this thread you English lot can learn a thing or two about arrogance from Dutch fans.

We always start strong, unanimously declare ourselves the undisputed favorite to win it all just to go out soon after. Then we say football has lost and are sad for the world for yet again losing the best team of the tournament through bad luck and unfair refereeing.

We're even arrogant about being arrogant, hence I'm posting this.

Bookies are quite objective, but I think that quite a lot also depends on how people are throwing money on them. If a lot of people put money in England, their odds get shortened.

It is interesting though, from these odds, England seem to be a massive favorites.

Interesting swing in the mood of this thread. Genuine question, is the media going down a similar route?

You've not watched football for very long then. United, as a club, are renowned for developing young talent and have an ethos for giving them opportunities. Many go on to play for England or their respective nation.

You also forgot Gary Neville, Phil Neville, Nicky Butt, Wes Brown.. there's loads.

That just shows that, if anything, most people are playing our chances down. The total opposite of arrogance.

Nope. Some 'sports' which might have had some resemblances with football as is today were played long before. Heck, there are active sports which have some resemblances with football (handball, basketball, rugby, American football and so on). In reality, most of team sports which involve a ball are a bit similar to each other.

England are definitely favourites to beat Colombia. There's not a bookie on the planet that would accept odds to the contrary.

Of course, they were also favourites to beat Iceland in the Euros...

Exactly and that is why nobody will be booking tickets for the quarters let alone Moscow on the 15th July.

If we were ever arrogant we are well face-smacked now.

Doesn't stop us being proud or hoping though.

England fans are by far the most pessimistic football fans I have ever come across. Most I talk to hardly even admit that they root for England in a tournament, let alone giving them any chance of winning it.

Yeah that Euros tournament felt like a bit of a tipping point. The end of English hubris. Expectations seem to be absolutely reasonable in this World Cup. Even after the understandable giddiness over putting 6 past Panama. That’s been how it seems to me from over here in Ireland anyway.

Regardless of whether someone dislikes a country or not (don't think that's the case), most of us I would imagine didn't 'pick' to support United. I certainly didn't. I'd never change but it's a family thing.

Well put MH. I think the lack of expectation from the media and the fans has helped Southgate develop a new dressing room environment. He is coming across as sensibly considered in his comments and the rumour is the dressing room is a bit more "friendly" this time with less pressure. I think the first two results will also have helped but long may it continue. Until we get knocked out that is.

"Good, good.. Let the bitterness flow through you.."

Falcao is awful. Cuadrado is overrated. James may be injured.
It's not unreasonable to be optimistic about beating Klobumbio.Teepee!
Sweden would really be a toughie though.
I saw Cuadrado play at Chelsea a couple of times and has truly awful. He flaters to deceive. He lookas good on the ball but as soon as anyone goes shoulder to shoulder with him he falls over. Falcao isn't any good either. He looks less fit than before. We should beat Columbo if we turn up.
I have two concerns my first being our defence. We are leaking goals and we really don't have a strong leader at the back. My second is the potential for a slight mental weakening after last nights result. Maybe it won't impact but we would have been on top of the world if we had won.

Easy on the Carling there, St George.
