Looks like this one is doing the rounds again...

It does seem like there is a bit more knowledge but it is the Mirror. Will be quite refreshing for the sport i think.

Gay footballers have stayed silent about their sexuality for fear of the backlash including taunts from opposing fans.

But with attitudes finally changing two Premier League stars believe the time is right to come out.

A source said: “The stigma has completely gone, and the public are far more accepting.

“At this level of football, being gay is almost the final frontier.

“It has always been such a macho game and, unfortunately, perhaps more than in any other sport, there can be an aggressive mob mentality in the stands.

“But finally the tide is turning and more and more sports people are openly gay.”

The two players – including an England international – have told family and friends, and are being supported by their clubs and the Football Association.

We are not revealing their names. They would become the first ever players to publicly announce they are gay while in the top flight of English
football. The stars are thought to be planning to go public before the start of next season.

We can also reveal that another well known player came out to friends in 2011.

But a homophobic word was then daubed in paint across his car.

It is understood he is now reluctant to come out publicly in case he is the target for more abuse.

In 1990 former Norwich and Nottingham Forest striker Justin Fashanu became Britain’s first openly gay footballer.

But he was subjected to malicious jibes from fellow players and terrible abuse from fans. He hanged himself, aged 37, in 1998 after being accused of sexual assault.

No male footballer since Fashanu has come out while still playing
professionally in this country.

Ex-Aston Villa midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger retired before his 2014 announcement that he is gay.

But gay stars in other sports have been blazing a trail including British diver Tom Daley.

Keegan Hirst made history in August when he became the first British professional rugby league player to come out. It followed the announcement in 2009 by gay rugby union star Gareth Thomas.

An FA spokesman declined to comment on the Premier League players. Insiders believe footballers may become even more popular after coming out – and hugely increase their earning power.

Top celebrity agent Simon Jones added: “Profile-wise there are no negatives to coming out in 2015. The world is literally their oyster.”

Jordan Henderson, Joe Hart or Adam Lallana without googling to see if they have girlfriends/wives

Wouldn't be surprised at any of them coming out as gay.

It's absolutely crazy in this day and age that something like this should even be considered news.

It's horrendous that these guys have to be concerned about the repercussions of being honest about their sexuality.

Bound to happen sooner rather than later. Society is only moving in one direction and football is falling (further) behind...

They should all join the caf to increase their courage and believe that fans won't judge. This forum is like a big gay parade at times

If it is a current England international then if he hasn't come out before June then it will dominate the run up to the Euros.

It will be a good thing. Not sure why people hate on gays anyway.

Anyway the player they are speculating is ...

Jack Butt-land

It is fun to speculate: Mata and Clyne.

Not a bad shout actually. I just hope it isn't Sakho... Not because I'd be embarrassed to have our future captain be gay, but because I'd be scared for any partner of his.

I'm not sure why people are surprised this is still an issue - football fans are at their heart very primal, and in this country it's largely made up of straight white males.

Reading these forums alone, you see stereotypes about race & objectification of women on a regular basis like it's nothing.

So being an athlete of the sport, having to worry about your sexuality in such a testosterone filled sport must be incredibly uncomfortable.

Are you on here? I'll never be able to get that place outta my head :wenger:

Too true. It's fun to speculate, though... Blind & Wilshere.
I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about but I've just had a look through that link you've posted and I cannot for the life of me stop laughing. I'm actually crying:

Would love to slip down those shorts and take him from behind, Looks like he is begging for it
:lol::lol:

My god too many to quote.

Sorry one more, the reply to the above quote:

Wouldn't we all? Wanna feck him hard and good.

EDIT: I like how their link could just as easily mean 'football manager forums' but you get thrust into the heart of 'famous males' forums.

Football fans are general cnuts, sadly. If they take the piss out of players wives, deaths or their disabled sons (Dwight Yorke for example), they arent above slagging someone off for their sexual preference. Whoever comes out will be both patronized by the scum media and ridiculed by backward clowns who go to matches.

I'm going with Juan Mata. He's having a romantic meal with competition winners after the match on Sunday. He's a fine man.

Other sports seem to have gone further than football though. I mean Rugby and GAA are hardly lacking for testosterone either...

As @FujiVice says, a lot of it is no doubt down to the fans. Rugby fans are awesome compared to football fans.

Imagine him naked and bent over in a gay sauna, with a long line of horny gays waiting their turn to slip their dicks into that beautiful arse.

Lads seriously you have to go on that link

Is that what I think it is? I'll never forget clicking on that link and then doing it again for another player.
Yes.

I could swear a story like this came out a year back, with that very link posted. Actually it's a different one. Same forum, I think. There was a lot of Shaw loving on the one I think we're thinking of too. Was the player never revealed?

Football fans are much more primal than rugby fans IMO.

I know it's a different country but these guys thinking of "coming out" should call Micheal Sam and ask him how that went....

How much would footballers really care about the fans though? I mean they're pretty much guaranteed to get abuse from them anyway. Does it really matter if that abuse is about them being gay rather than whatever they normally hear?

I'd have thought the reaction from the media, club and fellow players would be more of an issue. That and the worry that it would impact on their career.

Except when it comes to a night out and they all congregate together drinking cum/guinness cocktails, fingering each others arses and starting fights.

EDIT: Rugby fans I mean

Lee Cattermole seems the type.

this is weirdly specific

You make it sound like sports teams have or do not have standards. It all comes down to whether you are good enough or not. Ray Rice slapped his girlfriend and is washed-up. Gone. Adrian Peterson slapped his son and is still an awesome football player. He´s back in the league. They can act all high and mighty in the moment, but in the end it only matters what you can do on the field. The Chilenian buttplugger that Mainz were swearing to release. Back in the team.

Sam was a borderline NFL player going into the draft, who probably thought he´d increase his chances by coming out. It´s actually refreshing and good that nobody was scared to cut him, in fear of possible repercussions and insinuations from the media.

You really think if Rooney came out today, United would cut him tomorrow. Wait that´s a Ray Rice situation. Bad example. :nervous: ;)
