I'm hoping Rooney gets a couple of goals and shows his class and respect for his boyhood club by celebrating in a restrained manner.

Wayne Rooney will play for Manchester United in the FA Cup fifth round tie at former club Everton.
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has decided not to spare the 19-year-old the expected hostile reception.

Everton have also warned fans the club could be punished if the game is marred by crowd trouble.

The FA is monitoring Everton's crowd control after two pitch invasions this season and spokesman Ian Ross told BBC Sport: "We appeal for common sense."

Rooney's return provides a potential flashpoint, and Ross said: "We have been told that the authorities are monitoring the situation."

Police and stewarding will be stepped up, in line with crowd control for a high-profile fifth round tie, but Everton are likely to face a fine if there is any repeat of the invasions.

Ross added: "The last thing we want is anyone coming over the barriers on to the pitch.

"We've made a succession of appeals, through the manager David Moyes, chief executive Keith Wyness and our safety officer. We have done all we can to tell the fans they must not do this.

"Like all clubs, we have been warned that if we suffer repeated instances of people coming on to the pitch we could face punishment."

Chief executive Wyness said after the draw: "We are aware that emotions could be running high, but I am convinced that Evertonians will conduct themselves in a proper fashion."

Everton, meanwhile, have insisted Rooney will not be receiving any special attention on the pitch when he plays at Goodison for the first time since his £27m summer move to Old Trafford.

The 19-year-old England striker is set to receive a hostile reception at the ground where he was once idolised.

But Everton assistant manager Alan Irvine said: "He will be treated in the same way we treat all good players.

"He was coming back sometime. It just happens to be a little bit earlier than we expected.

"It doesn't make a great deal of difference. He will be treated in our normal professional manner."

It has been reported that Rooney is desperate to play, despite claims will be guarded by minders after receiving threats and seeing graffiti daubed throughout Liverpool after his decision to quit Everton.

Merseyside Police, meanwhile, has told Manchester United fans with tickets for the home end at Everton that they will be ejected.

"Any away fans found sitting in designated home areas of the stadium will be ejected," said a Merseyside police spokesman.

"Segregation is a condition of the club's safety certificate."

Everton fans claim the club's policy of tickets on general sale being handled by an outside agency have led to tickets being bought by United fans.

But Toffees' secretary David Harrison said: "This is the way we always sell our tickets and have done so when Manchester United have been playing here for the last 10 years.

"We are hearing the same thing, that there are thousands of tickets in wrong hands. That is nonsense.

"Everyone who buys a ticket is told that if they are in the wrong areas then they will be ejected."

Everton are without suspended duo James Beattie and Tim Cahill, while injured Steve Watson and Li Tie are still out.

There are doubts over Duncan Ferguson (back), James McFadden (thigh) and Leon Osman (knee), but Tony Hibbert returns.

Manchester United include Ruud van Nistelrooy in the squad for the first time in three months following the Dutchman's Achilles problem.

Alan Smith (ankle) and Louis Saha (hamstring) are included, with Wayne Rooney set to start.

FA Cup preview: Everton v United

UNITED boss Sir Alex Ferguson looks set to have a full £68m strike complement to choose from when the Reds travel to Everton in the FA Cup fifth round.

Ruud van Nistelrooy has been champing at the bit in training this week since his return from Holland on Tuesday after completing rehabilitation work for an Achilles injury.

Alan Smith was back on the training ground at Carrington on Thursday, and Louis Saha has been working as well, which means Ferguson has all his big guns firing for the first time since November.

Meanwhile, Everton boss David Moyes has a skeleton squad as he prepares for the Goodison Park clash.

James Beattie and Tim Cahill are suspended, while long-term injured duo Steve Watson and Li Tie are also still out. Moyes also has doubts over Duncan Ferguson (back), James McFadden (thigh) and Leon Osman (knee) - but full-back Tony Hibbert returns after a one match suspension.

It means Mikel Arteta can expect his first start - while Everton's other loan signing Guillaume Plessis will be on the bench along with teenage defender Anthony Gerrard.

Despite thier selection problems, United defender Rio Ferdinand is still wary of the Toffees.

He said: “Everton still have people who score goals so it would be wrong for us to think because they’ve got so many out it will be easier.

“And they are used to playing with just Marcus Bent up front anyway."

Rio wants FA Cup closure
Stuart Mathieson

RIO Ferdinand aims to wipe out the bitter-sweet memory of Manchester United's FA Cup triumph last May and lap up the famous experience in full this year.

When the Reds beat Millwall in Cardiff last season, Ferdinand was in a suit in the Millennium Stadium, serving his eight-month FA ban.

The England defender did not play one minute of the cup campaign, having missed the third round opener with Aston Villa before his suspension for missing a drug test kicked in.

This season, the 26-year-old missed the Exeter ties, but played against Middlesbrough in the fourth round.

Tomorrow's fifth-round clash at Everton will be only his second FA Cup game for the Reds.

Desperate

And he says he is desperate to make up for lost opportunities.

"It was very difficult for me last year in the FA Cup, because I was banned. Even going to the game in Cardiff was mentally tough," Rio told M.E.N Sport.

"I hadn't played a part in it and that felt strange. I wanted to support the lads, but it's a weird feeling to know you could have been there playing with them.

"I wanted them to win the cup, and I was happy we did, but I was disappointed as well that I missed out on it all. The day was full of mixed emotions for me.

"It was hurtful being banned while we won something. But if we hadn't won anything, then I would have still been hugely disappointed. It was a double-edged sword. I couldn't win emotionally.

"It will be nice to be able to put that right this season. I want to keep the trophy for ourselves and I am desperate to be a part of it this time.

"I haven't won it and I haven't won many trophies either, so to miss out on one that could have been there for me was difficult to take.

"I have won the Charity Shield and the Premiership title, but I want to see my cabinet bulging by the time my career finishes and that was a chance to win an FA Cup medal.

Achievement

"If you can say you have won the FA Cup, then that is a great achievement. It is something I certainly want in my collection.

"People say it is low down on our priorities, but it is not a long way down. Yes, it isn't top priority but it's not far off. It is still an achievement I want to point to when I have finished playing."

Although Everton are understrength for the game Ferdinand was quick to praise the Toffees' efforts this season.

"You have to pay testimony to them for where they have got to this season. Compared to the teams around them, they have done it with limited resources. They obviously have a great team spirit to be up where they are. They have done fantastically well."

Ferdinand added that Ruud van Nistelrooy is raring to go.

He said: "Ruud has been looking very sharp in training for us. He has been back three days and he looks very hungry. It is great for the manager to get all his firepower back. The strength of our players up front is frightening."

Ferguson set to unleash Rooney

SIR Alex Ferguson will unleash Wayne Rooney on Everton tomorrow confident his £27million striker can handle the abuse certain to roll down the Goodison Park stands.

Everton have drafted in extra security for Rooney's first return since he controversially quit his boyhood idols to join Manchester United in August.

Toffees fans have warned the 19-year-old he faces an ugly reception, even though their team have prospered since his departure, and the England international's mental strength seems certain to receive a severe test as the FA Cup holders look to book a place in the last eight.

But the furore surrounding Rooney's re-appearance on Merseyside has not prompted Ferguson to take the youngster out of the firing line, even though Ruud van Nistelrooy is available for the first time in three months.

The United boss believes it is inevitable the home supporters will target their old boy, but remains convinced the Croxteth-born star will be unaffected by the verbal battering.

"Wayne will handle the pressure," said Ferguson.

"Like any player going back to his former club, he is going to get a bit of stick.

"That kind of thing happens all the time these days because it is rare for a player to spend all his career at one club.

"But over the years, Manchester United's relationship with Everton has been outstanding and hopefully that will be the same after tomorrow."

The anticipation of Rooney's return is heightened by the very real possibility he could be the matchwinner.

Last month, he scored the only goal at Anfield when United defeated Liverpool, while last weekend, his was the only Red Devils' name on the scoresheet in a victorious Manchester derby at Eastlands.

Fantastic

Those efforts are part of his present run of six goals in eight appearances, which also includes a late effort in the third round replay at Exeter as well as his two wonder-strikers in the fourth round win over Middlesbrough three weeks ago.

"Wayne has been fantastic for us recently," said Ferguson.

"I don't need to spell that out, the evidence is there on the football field.

"What we can all see now is a maturing player, a young lad who is getting better and better all the time."

Though Rooney's 13-goal effort has torpedoed him to the top of United's goalscoring charts, he remains a mere star pupil alongside the master van Nistelrooy.

With 13 wins in 19 outings since the prolific Dutchman last turned out for the Old Trafford outfit, the statistics indicate van Nistelrooy has not been missed too much.

But the 28-year-old's recovery from an Achilles injury could not be better timed given Wednesday's vital Champions League tussle with AC Milan.

Van Nistelrooy was a goalscorer at the Millennium Stadium in May when United lifted the FA Cup for a record 11th time and was also on target twice on their last visit to Goodison 12 months ago, nodding home an injury-time winner after Everton had battled their way back from a three goal half-time deficit.

While an anticipated sticky pitch will probably prevent Van Nistelrooy from starting tomorrow's encounter, he seems certain to be allocated a bench slot, along with another fit-again front-man Alan Smith, with Louis Saha set to play after recovering from a slight hamstring problem.

"It is one of the few times I have had all four strikers available," said Ferguson.

"Now I have a big decision to make regarding who should play and who I should have on the bench, but that is a bonus for me because last week I didn't think they would all be fit for tomorrow.

"But, after watching them in training this week, I now know they are."

With Darren Fletcher ruled out for two months with a knee injury and John O'Shea still getting over the massive bang on the head he took against City, two changes from last weekend are inevitable, with Ryan Giggs and Cristiano Ronaldo hoping to step up from the bench.

However, Ferguson is determined to field his strongest line-up against Everton and AC Milan, with the prospect of big changes - including a first Barclays Premiership appearance for teenage Italian striker Giuseppe Rossi - against Portsmouth next weekend.

"The strength of the side just now is phenomenal," said Ferguson.

"We are playing so well, I am tempted to leave things alone. The changes are only about whether I introduce one of the strikers or two.

"Once we get tomorrow out of the way, we have four days to prepare for Milan. After that I will make changes, purely because of the draining effect next Wednesday's game will have on some of my players."

All our strikers Ruud, saha, rooney and smith are finally fit, will be interesting to see who fergie plays.

O'Shea not allowed to play due to concussion regulations. He should be ok for wednesday.

Duncan Ferguson doubtful with injury-buts lets face it, he'll play the last 15 mins. All he needs to do is stand in the pen area for corners.

O'Shea will also be out as he recovers from his heads consussion, won't be suprise if we rest some key players, but still be a strong line-up.

Fergie has fab four fit

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed he is willing to play Wayne Rooney at Everton but he has more striking options at his disposal than at any other point in 2005.

ferguson_rooney.jpg

The United boss is able to call upon Ruud van Nistelrooy, Alan Smith, Louis Saha and Rooney and has a wealth of talent available for the FA Cup fifth round trip to Goodison Park.

"It's fantastic to have all three of them back," he said, referring to van Nistelrooy, Smith and Saha.

"It's probably one of the few times I've had them all available, which is great.

"I have a big decision to make regarding who should play and who should be on the bench but it's good to have that a decision.

"It's a big bonus because, last week, I didn't think all four would be ready for the Milan game or the Everton game. But now, after seven days of watching them in training, I know they are ready.

"So I'm quite convinced that they are all ready to play."
There will be an obvious temptation to rest Rooney and spare him a hostile reception from the fans who once worshipped the teenager.

However, Ferguson believes the England international can handle the atmosphere on Merseyside.

"Wayne's been fantastic," he exclaimed. "I don't think I have to spell that out.

"I think he will handle it.

"The relationship between Everton and Manchester United over the years has been outstanding. There's never been any problem between both clubs and that will be the same after tomorrow.

"Obviously with any player going back to his former club, he's going to get a bit of stick.

"That happens all the time."

Moyes calls for calm

Everton boss David Moyes has called for calm ahead of Saturday's cup clash with Manchester United and the return of Wayne Rooney.

moyes_look.jpg

Goodison Park has yet to host its former favourite son and may yet have to wait beyond this weekend, if Sir Alex Ferguson elects to rest the England hit-man.

If Rooney does start then a more than frosty reception is anticipated but Moyes has urged the club's supporters to back The Toffees rather barrack their former favourite.

''I want Everton supporters to be as strong as they can be but not towards Wayne,'' Moyes told Sky Sports News.

''Rather, get behind the team like they have done all season - they've been brilliant.

''If the players give their best tomorrow, I'm expecting the fans to be right behind them, if that's the case.

''We don't like good players coming back because it's hard to deal them and Wayne's a good player.''

Moyes concedes that Rooney has improved as a player since leaving Merseyside and credits the work Manchester United have done in his development.

''He's improving all the time. His age will make him more experienced, more confident as he goes along,'' he continued.

''He was an excellent player here but I'm sure he is improving.

''We'll treat United with respect and their players, because they are a fabulous team and history shows they win trophies.''

Everton v Man Utd preview

The big question ahead of Saturday's teatime FA Cup fifth round showdown at Goodison Park is will Wayne Rooney play for Manchester United?

rooney_serious.jpg

The former Toffees idol can expect a stormy reception from the Everton fans after leaving his boyhood favourites to join United in the summer.

Sir Alex Ferguson has the option of resting his in-form teenager with a massive match against Milan on the horizon and Ruud van Nistelrooy has been back in training all week.

Much could depend on whether Louis Saha is fit enough to play after again returning from France duty with an injury, and also Alan Smith's availability as he looks to make his comeback. Van Nistelrooy might be on the bench.

Darren Fletcher is out after injuring knee ligaments but Ryan Giggs and Cristiano Ronaldo should be fit enough to play after starting on the bench in the Manchester derby.

The Red Devils are unbeaten against Everton since losing to the Merseysiders in the 1995 FA Cup final and Duncan Ferguson, who played at Wembley, is doubtful with a back problem.

Influential duo James Beattie and Tim Cahill are both suspended following the defeat to Chelsea last weekend and there are doubts over Leon Osman and
James McFadden.

Li Tie and Steve Watson remain sidelined and out of contention for places.

The state of the Goodison pitch may be of some concern to United and it should be a full-blooded cup tie.

Skysports.com Prediction: 1-2.

All eyes on Rooney which could allow other Red Devils to shine.
