Apparently Rooney was back training with the first team today.
DDG
Rafa Jones Smalling Evra
Carrick Fellaini (will have a lot to prove)
Welbeck Mata Kagawa
Rooney
I'd be happy with that XI.

Remarkably reductive logic.
Moyes found Everton in the gutter. They were on the rocks financially and their Chair had started selling players behind Walter Smith's back to keep the banks off. They'd finished in the top half of the table once in 10 years, their previous 5 finishes were 17th, 14th, 13th, 16th, 15th. It looked inevitable that they'd get relegated and the season that Moyes took over looked like being it.
Instead he kept them safe, then over the next 10 years only finished in the bottom half of the table twice, with his last 5 finishes 5th, 8th 7th, 7th, 6th. I think its totally fair to say that Moyes saved Everton. Had they been relegated, given their perilous financial position in those days, they could have been facing years in the wilderness of the lower leagues. Instead he rebuilt the club and assembled a team of players that were able to take the club to the cusp of challenging the big boys, trying to compete with clubs with double the spending power.
Just because Martinez has been able to pick up the reigns, add his stamp and move them forward doesn't take away from what Moyes did in any way. That Martinez was able to pick up that Everton team and challenge the top 4 is credit to Moyes. Do you think he could have done that had he taken them over in the relegation zone as Moyes did?
History certainly suggests not. Martinez took a team in Wigan that had finished 10th, 17th, 14th and 11th in their first four years, then proceeded to lead them to finish 16th, 16th, 15th and 18th, ending of course in relegation. Martinez is building on the foundations Moyes built.
So does that mean Moyes is better than? Course not. Different managers are right for different clubs at different times. Moyes did outstandingly well at Everton, Martinez has done too.
Why doesn't he? Everton have got better without him and United have got a lot worse with him. He's obviously not a good enough manager.

Superb post.
I don't think anyone is trying to put down what Moyes did at all , it was a remarkable job to take them clear of the relegation zone and have them achieve a stable place in the top half of the table with very little money. For me all this proves is that this is Moyes level, and where he should be managing wise. On the other hand Martinez ended up playing an attractive style of attacking football at Wigan which would be more suited to a top club but was detrimental to a relegation zone club where defensive solidarity is key. Ultimately, what Moyes has achieved at Everton has absolutely nothing to do with Manchester United, a club that realistically aims to win every trophy that it is in (mainly the League). It is a fact that United has become worse without him and it is also a fact Everton have now become better without him, they were in some sort of an equilibrium in their position in the table over the last years and now they have evolved under Martinez and are challenging for 4th.
oh my god thank you. I might put this post on the clip board and just paste it everytime someone gets uppity and feels confident enough to say moyes destroyed evertonRemarkably reductive logic.

It is easy to forget the hard work someone has done when someone else comes in and does better, no matter how small/big the difference is. Take nothing away from Moyes, he did a fantastic job at Everton, considering they were teetering above relegation when he joined. Despite what Martinez is doing now at Everton, Moyes work at Everton still stands as being a fantastic achievement. Martinez is doing a brilliant job now but even he would tell you that if it was for Moyes work previously, Everton wouldn't be where they are now.Remarkably reductive logic.

Does anyone else reckon we shouldn't be starting Rooney in this one?
He never, ever plays well after he's just come back from an injury, usually takes more than a few games to get going so I don't care that he's been declared fit. He was obviously completely gash against Bayern too to remind people of the nosedive his general play takes when he's carrying/just recovered from injury.
Secondly he seemingly never plays well on Merseyside either. Usually terrible at both Goodison and Anfield. I think he tries too hard when returning to his old haunt. The fans get on his back and he then becomes a danger to the rest of our team.
If we went with Chicharito being fed by Mata and Kagawa like against Newcastle we'd be a mobile and fluid attack. Can imagine a lot breaking down if we play Wazza now.
Agree, he always seems to have a frustrated game at Goodison. Not what we need at all this weekend. Whole XI needs to be focused and we've got little to play for so distractions will be amplified.
Doubt Moyes will have the balls to drop him if he's fit though.
If Rooney's fit then he shouldn't be dropped. He's arguably been our best outfield player this season. Granted he doesn't always play brilliantly against Everton, and Hernandez was super against Newcastle, Rooney is the type of player who can produce something out of nothing, and that could well be the difference in a game against Everton.
Hernandez can always come on if we need a goal or to push Everton's back line back with runs in behind.
Spot on. But I think Moyes would play him if he had one leg.Does anyone else reckon we shouldn't be starting Rooney in this one?

I've noticed this too. Liverpool especially. A sign of the times indeed, were in a situation where using countering tactics against Everton is seemingly an accepted philosophy but not only that its probably our only hope.

You were married for a long time. It wasn't perfect living in that little place. There wasn't enough money to get all the things you wanted, but you made it work. And one day a rich, powerful woman walked into your life and told you to move in with her and live in her big mansion. She saw something special in you that no one else did. So you dropped your wife and even took one of the dogs, the one with the frizzy black hair, on the way out the door. Now you had money to buy anything you fancied.

It's been a year and it hasn't really turned out as expected. Friends tell you that the ex-wife has never been happier, she's found a younger man and things are looking up for their future. She's positively glowing by all accounts. You don't want to let on that you're making your new wife absolutely miserable in that huge house. She bought you a Ferrari but you can hardly drive it so it sits off to the side in the garage. To make matters worse you have to drag the new wife along to a social obligation at the old place you once shared with your ex-wife. The days are ticking down and yes, he will be there. Her new husband who is living in your old house, bringing her to new heights. You're feeling defensive but also confused about what to do. It's so hard making decisions.

Everton just conceded 3 goals at home to Palace who have only scored 27 goals all season, only Norwich have scored less (26). They are certainly beatable and with Mata fresh and the team playing with confidence away from home I don't see why we should be worried about this game.
I hope we batter them. They're getting far too cocky.

I'd like to see Januzaj get a run now until the end of the season. He's had lots of time off recently, will have the whole summer off too, so I'd be very disappointed if he's not given the chance to stretch his legs and just relax and enjoy his football in the coming weeks free of pressure.
How would you line up the three?
I think we need to give Juanji Matawa a game against Everton to see what he can do against a team that are nearer the top of the league. I also think it makes sense to play Valencia down the right to try and deal with Baines and stretch play too.
I would keep Adnan in reserve looking to bring him on if needed.
After this game, I would move Kagawa to the right flank and let Adnan play down the left. Kagawa has a good left foot and also will be given a free roaming role anyway.
Alternatively, let Januzaj drift from the right and Kagawa from the left so the front four will just occupy vacant space and move around like that, full backs provide width and let Fellaini and Carrick sit.
Think we'll put out something like this:
De gea
Jones smalling Vidic evra
Carrick fellaini
Valencia mata kagawa
Rooney
Put in Rafael at right back and move jones in the middle and it'd probably be our strongest lineup in moyes' eyes (I'd just take out fellaini but whatever).
Doubt Evans will start as moyes just said he's making progress rather then fully fit, the front 4 should be that though. Welbeck has done well but the only player you could argue he should start over is Valencia, but Valencia has been pretty good lately.
Start fellaini in the hole ahead of mata, kagawa or Rooney....---------D Gea
-------Back Four (Who evers fit this week)
-----Carrick Jones
Nani Fellaini Januzaj
------Hernandez
I know its strange not having Mata or Kagawa start. But I don't who else we have that can hold the ball up and link up play. So I've just tryed picking a balanced team rather than do it the England way.(Shoving unfit players in and putting square pegs in round holes.) A team thats the sum of it parts and all that.
Start fellaini in the hole ahead of mata, kagawa or Rooney....
Your lineup is exactly what the England way is, hoof it up to some target man who will throw elbows all game.
