Everton vs Manchester United

I had similar feelings this morning. Then I heard about Rio and the excitement was replaced with anxiety.

the concern will kick in later for me, probably when I see the offical line-up. I'm just buzzing about seeing us in action again in the league at the moment.

Rio out could be a huge blow.. especially with this being away. At OT, I would expect us to control the game more..

Yeah, this would be my concern. A win tonight if we have to field Carrick at the back would be outstanding.

Carrick having to play at CB tonight is far from ideal and especially against Everton who will be putting lots of crosses into the box. Vidic is going to have to be at his imperious best and even then we are going to need a bit of luck.

One positive is that Carrick's composure and passing from the back can help us to control possession by getting the ball into the midfielders feet as often as possible.

Reckon we'll start with one of these two line-ups and bring on the players listed as subs. In regards to Right Back, I think SAF will go for an actual defender in Rafael while Carrick has to play at Centre Back. It's arguable that Valencia can defend better than Rafael, but I think Rafael will still do it more naturally and with Valencia in front of him anyway, we're pretty solid down that side as they can double up on Baines in both an offensive and defensive sense.

I think Scholes has to start to give us any kind of control, and Cleverley will aid that further and provide the legs. Rooney starts and I can't see Kagawa being left on the bench. Nani and van Persie are the two fighting for the final slot IMO, but both will play at least 25-30 minutes anyway.

Giggs will replace van Persie or Kagawa to play behind the striker (Rooney). Nani will come on to play Left Wing, probably replacing Kagawa or van Persie. While Anderson replaces Scholes in either formation if we need some legs in the late game.

I keep changing my mind about the lineup for today. A part of me wants us to just go all out and out cleverley with ando in the middle, behind nani, kagawa, Rooney and RVP and Valencia in right back. I mean, sure that is really weak defensively but offensively that would be incredible. I doubt any defence would be able to stop those players.
I think since it's e first game though that SAF will just go for the safe route, with a 4-2-3-1 and RVP on the bench. Can't decide if he will go with Valencia or Rafael for rb though.

probably Rafael due to Carrick having to play as a CB

So basicaly what we need to do is play Chicharito from the start, let him score a goal and we've done our job :D

Seriously, I'll be pretty happy with a draw. We have the toughest opening game of all our rivals.

Attack is the best form of defence.

You know it makes sense.

To be honest start of the season is probably the best time to play them. I'd rather it was our 2nd or 3rd fixture though. It's going to be massively tense.

Yes, given the defensive injuries a draw would be a decent result. It's a long season.

Our first XI must be the most difficult to choose in the league. No wonder it's so exciting in the build up to kick off and the teams being announced..

Usually we get better as the game goes on, but sometimes when we dominate a game we can get a bit complacent at the end, whether we've scored 1 or 4 goals. We just need to make sure we keep our focus.

Pretty tough first match, definitely don't have a good feeling going into this one. No idea what our defenders have been doing in training, but losing 4 centre backs at once is just irresponsible.

Can't see us winning this, think it'll be a 2-2.

If we won't underestimate their team and manager, we will defeat them.

There may be a lot of long passes from Howard to Fellaini, who's overall quite a quality player, indeed.

I'd rather start RVP on the bench. He wont be match fit, and I don't think its a good idea taking the risk of playing him without full fitness, considering his injury record. Plus, he's be great to bring on late on if we're chasing it, Everton would shit themselves. Saying that, I don't think Fergie will be able to resist his inner muppet.

Agreed.

Nor should he. We're going to want Rooney and Van Persie working together for the big games. Would've been nice to get them some friendlies together, but it's too late for that. Chuck them onto the pitch and let's get to work. Everton always start the season shit anyway.
