Nah, Mercedes handed the initiative to Red Bull. Put Lewis in for fresher tyres and Max would be forced to pit too, you can't hold off a car which is faster and has fresher tyres for too long.
Yet another race that Mercedes will rely on Lewis to bail them out of their shit strategy.

That's why even after you spend a few hundred million in R&D to build the fastest car, you still spend another 60 million to stick the best driver ever in it.
Every time I see a situation like this I always think of the leaders tyres going away and always forget about the chasers tyres degrading. This is going to be tight.

No issue? If they were both on a brand new set of softs I'd still back Max to crash into an overtaking Lewis rather than watch him go past.
With Max on a worn out set of hards, it's not even a question.
He’s staying at around 14secs behind it’s not happening.
Max's are 24 laps fresher, it won't degrade as much as Hamilton's.
This current pace from Lewis is scintillating. If he keeps this pace he’s ok. Question is, gonna be such a nervous end if they hit the curve. Given the load on the straights too… gotta be stressing about a puncture.

Then Verstappen likely stays out. Being a VSC he would have ~10 seconds advantage to Hamilton, and another chance to tangle with Hamilton on track.
I think Hamilton has this on pace in either scenario, but we've seen time and again that the driver in 2nd has an advantage.
