F1 2023 Season

Not had a chance to follow last few weekends - are McLaren high up based on track suitability or genuine pace upgrades?

Upgrades but potentially both. Hungary will be interesting. If they are still up there on that track then these upgrades have made them absolutely brilliant.

Can only hope. Have no time for Norris but always had a soft spot for McLaren.

Piastri had old car specs in Austria, only Norris had the upgraded version. So it's the first race for Piasrti to use the new and better car.

I was more about how Piastri didn't look anything special this year in general, so this is positive result even if he had the best car on the grid.

Wow, mclaren. Damn. Norris cars at 75% upgraded and piastri at 50% upgraxed. Last part of upgrades to come at hungary. Sensational performancd. That was a great qually session.

I'm still not over how bad Checo has been the last many races. His performances have been horrendous. Especially in qualifying.
Honestly. what's keeping Red Bull from giving the seat to Ricciardo for the rest of the season?

As a McLaren fan this is the best I’ve felt since Monza 21 but that felt more track specific and circumstantial than the leap forward in pace this weekend.

It’ll probably transpire to be midfield pace vs the Alpines for the rest of the season but it gives me hope that they’re moving in the right direction for the first time in a while. Hopefully the new technical recruits and wind tunnel being completed in the next couple of years will pay dividends.

Rumor is they tested him on the simulator and he was actually worse.

Just watched qualifying again.
Forget Max 5th pole was always on, even if for a second I thought it was Norris.
The McLaren upgrades are working better than anybody thought they would.
Piastri did not look anything special, did nothing in FP, Norris the same but the pair nailed it.

The car at silverstone minus the upcoming upgrades at hungury is the car mclaren wanted to start the season with. Also their car designer is ex-redbull from newey's team. If anyone would be able to copy the RB it would be him. Forgot his name.

Ferrari engine reliability seems to be a concern as both Haas and Alfa Romeo had engine issues.

Rob Marshall - he’s the McLaren new technical director of engineering and design.

Watched Williams and Mansell Red 5.
Fantastic documentary.
You forget just how good a driver he was and how tough he had it to be WC
He had some bad injuries.
He should have had 2 maybe 3 WC, he was so unlucky, I remember watching the blow out in Australia.
The Williams he did win was a beast of a car.
One thing I forgot about was his fallout with Piquet, things got quite nasty, also forgot about him having Senna by the throat after Senna took them both out.
Mansell is one of the F1 Legends.

Yeah I agree, definitely deserves more titles, had he stayed in 93 I think in that Williams he beats prost (I know prost beat him before but mansell was a beast in that Williams).

What he did in indycar was incredible too, basically with a broken back.

One of my all time favourite drivers, didn't know this documentary was out so will give it a look.

Norris says the car is still over the place in every corner in comparision with what he saw with Alonso's car, so it could be just good qualifying setup, but it's still major improvement on what they were couple of months ago.

I know McLaren have received some criticism for the chrome car but I really really like it, best looking car on the grid for me, I'd love them to keep it all year.

His Indycar win was pretty amazing give his broken back.
He was an excellent driver, some of the stuff in the doc I never knew, it was a feat just to get an F1 drive.
Every bit as good has the Senna documentary.

Will be interesting to see race pace, on qualifying pace a podium is possible, but can they keep that pace over the whole race.

I wonder if Perez will come through the field, annoyingly a lot of the drivers in lesser cars will just get out his way like they did last week, making his progress look better than it actually is

I think IF hes dispatched, it'll be during the summer break. I think their decision would be a lot easier if Ricciardo had done well recently but he's hardly covered himself in glory the last few years and they could bin Perez off to get an even worse replacement. Prime DR was very good, but will he be at that level?

Delighted for McLaren. If their car is sliding as much as Norris states, then tyre management might be more of an issue at Silverstone.

I know McLaren said that their updates were delayed and got huge stick for it. But given how much the car looks like the RB, I wonder if their plan all along was to wait to see what the best car looked like this season and copied it as soon and as closely as they could.

Feels like the most effective approach for teams without top wind tunnels etc.

I doubt it's actually true, just a mandela effect, but in my head he fecks up every qualification, then jumps some 10 places and gets voted driver of the day

It’s also very annoying how much credit Perez gets during the GP. He takes 3/4 of a GP to overtake cars at least a second slower than him, has to rely on super DRS to pass and the commentators claim it’s a great comeback and gets voted driver of the day when he finishes in the top 6.
