Fergie: Boro game is a big test for us

Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted Manchester United face a test of character on Saturday when Middlesbrough will look to knock them out of a second cup competition in four days. :nono: :nervous:

Ferguson suffered his first domestic semi-final defeat in 20 games on Wednesday night when Damien Duff's bizarre touchline free-kick five minutes from time earned Chelsea a 2-1 Carling Cup victory and a Millennium Stadium meeting with Liverpool next month.

"It is about character now," said the United boss. "Saturday will be a test and a challenge for us. I am not really worried about having to pick the players up but their recovery from this game is important."

He added: "We will give them plenty of rest before the Middlesbrough game and hopefully we will get into the next round."

important key players like keano, scholes or rio should be rested. that team should be good enough for boro.

I'd go for full strength team, Boro normally give us a hard time

~~~~~~~~~~~~Carroll~~~~~~~~~~
G.Neville~~Ferdinand~~Silvestre~~Heinze
Ronaldo~~~Fletcher~~~Scholes~~Giggs
~~~~~~Rooney~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~Saha~~~~~~~~~~
Attacking team all the way
Fletcher could be swapped with another midfielder, (Not Fortune for this game though)
I think We should start with Rooney and smith up front and try to score the first goal in first 20-30 mins or we'll struggle against the feckers as usual
After such a hard match last night, and with 3 matches in 6 days do you think Fergus will rotate for the cup match? Two days rest inbetween huge matches may not be enough for some of your players, especially with Arsenal on Tuesday.
I think there will be a lot of changes in your team. It wont be a "weak" team but I can't see the same XI(more or less) play every match this week.
Think he would normally go with Rooney, but with Arsenal 3 days later. Hopefully we can get a lead early and then take off Giigs and Scholes so they'll be fresh for Tuesday.
Boro have been leaking goals and Saha's pace should be able to cause problems
There be changes, but not wholesale changes.
I'd actually be tempted to put Miller in the midfield next to Scholes. Boro are not the most physical team but do like to play through the midfield, think it could be a good game for him to play.
miller????????? how does he merit a start ahead of phil nev or fortune?
in my opinion wes brown, phil neville, rooney o shea and smith will all start if fit and available.
i expect scholes,giggs and maybe rio to be rested ahead of arsenal!
I AGREE we should play ful strength, but think fergie will use whole squad!
I wish we would go back to proper 4-4-2 formation which is what United is about - instead of all this mucking around. Ok Keano, Fletcher are out so bring in Fortune and Phil Nev and put Rooney up alongside Saha - we are at home ffs ! Phizza can do the holding role infront of the back 4, Scholesy, Quinton and Giggsy can get up and support the forwards.
All out attack and hit them hard and early, go up 2-0 or 3-0 at halftime... no defensive minded midfielder...
I don't understand why the feck rest players, I know there is an arsenal game to consider but boro have always been a bogey team for us, We will play a strong team because Boro will and the FA Cup represent our best chance of a trophy.
Bad feeling about this game. We need to put out a full strength team against Boro, but that isn't going to happen because of the Arse game a couple of days later.
Boro always play well at Old Trafford.
4-1 to United
Ronaldo, Rooney, Smith, and Scholes-Micky&Carrol mixup
PS. I think Carrol is spelled with one "l"
Ruuuuuud!!!!! Is he still injured? I really can't understand how on earth we have all our players healthy for STUPID/USELESS tours and not having them when we really need them?!?
Until the Milan game, it seems !
United to outplay 'boro :) 3-1 MU: Rooney, Ronnie, Giggs M: Gaz OG
btw. Carroll is spelled with 2 r's and 2 l's i think...
Because if we don't give Miller a chance he'll never show the form he showed for Celtic in Europe last year. Boro are not the most physical side especially with out Boateng in their Midfield
Fergie expecting tough tie
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has praised Middlesbrough ahead of the FA Cup fourth round tie with Steve McClaren's men.
Ferguson stresses United are determined to retain the trophy they won last May after beating Millwall in Cardiff and feels it was important the club sent out the right message after their sensational withdrawal from the competition in 2000.
"You have to be satisfied with a home draw," he told Sky Sports News. "I'm very conscious it's a Premier League team and Middlesbrough have a very good record over the years.
"It should be a cracking cup tie and we want to make it a real cup tie. When you get an atmosphere like we had on Wednesday, I'd say there's no better place.
"Roy Keane is suspended and young [Darren] Fletcher is still injured although, hopefully, he'll be okay for Tuesday [against Arsenal].
"Alan Smith, we thought was okay on Wednesday morning but then he had a little twinge that stopped him playing so we have to make a decision if it's worth risking him or saving him for Tuesday."
Ferguson maintained his belief that United are among the top two clubs in the country, despite their current league position of third, and he also continues to blame Damien Duff's midweek winner on his defenders rather than under-fire keeper Tim Howard.
"I think both [United and Chelsea] showed their form is terrific. I don't think anyone can disagree that both sides are currently playing the best football.
"We've been undefeated since October and Chelsea are on a fantastic run. You saw that on Wednesday.
"I think modern day journalism is definitely sometimes negative in these situations [with Duff's goal]. But I have no qualms about responsibilities and who caused the goal on Wednesday and all the defenders know they should have cleared that ball. It's come 45 yards or something like that and they deal with that all the time in the Premier League so it was a giveaway from us."
Switching his focus to the tough assignment against Middlesbrough, Ferguson welcomes the challenge posed by his former assistant McClaren and his side.
"Steve obviously knows the players but I don't think it gives him a greater insight than other managers," he continued.
"A lot play five in midfield, slow it down and try to cause problems but Middlesbrough have a good record here going back to Bryan Robson's time.
"But the FA Cup is a little bit different as we have got a great record here in the FA Cup.
"Steve's done exceptionally well and balanced out young players from the youth team. Stewart Downing, in particular, and the young boy [James] Morrison and [Tony] McMahon and I think they have a vibrant youth team. They've added [Michael] Reiziger, [Ray] Parlour, [Mark] Viduka and [Jimmy Floyd] Hasselbaink and that's given Steve an experienced and strong squad.
"The great benefit of winning the cup is you've got to defend it. Only one team can defend it and that's the winner.
"I'm proud of it. We exorcised the ghosts around the club from the time we didn't appear in the cup when, quite rightly, there was criticism.
"It was something I didn't want to happen but we were forced into it in a way. Not everyone understood but I understand the criticism but I also understand the policy of going to Brazil."
Ferguson admitted there is "absolutely nothing" going on in the transfer market with United ahead of Monday's deadline.
REIZIGER: UNITED UNDER PRESSURE
Middlesbrough defender Michael Reiziger believes Manchester United are under pressure to win the FA Cup this season.
The FA Cup would appear to represent United´s most realistic opportunity of lifting a trophy, but Boro and Ferguson´s former number two in Steve McClaren will not make it easy.
"They are favourites, there is no doubt about that," said Reiziger, with Boro without a win in their last four league outings. "Manchester United are a big club and have a very good team with quality players, and they are playing at home, but they have got some pressure on them."
