FC Barcelona 2016/2017

This is a great analisis, though I think Xavi is a greater factor above all the rest towards this new style

Unless we find someone really special, we're going to need two players to fulfill the role Xavi was doing alone, Busquets has some of his tools (good first touch pass, knows how to keep possesion, uses that self-roulette Xavi mastered) but I'd put him with another DM with similar skills and Rakitic/Iniesta as the 10, Messi in the future.

We would need a lot more help from the fullbacks to create football, but with the strength another DM would bring they'd have more help defending too

Yeah and while still very good Barca and Spain have not dominated possession in the same matter since Xavi.

This is a stupid question/suggestion but, how do you think Wilshere would do at Barca?

Rodgers turns down Barca
By Wilf Thistle

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has dismissed his own speculation linking him with the Barcelona job. Having initially thrown his ring into the hat, Rodgers has now decided to fester away in Glasgow after receiving zero emails from Spain.

"I'm having a grand time here in Scotland, no matter that my girlfriend Ribena thinks it's all 'shortbread and sheep shit'. So, if Barca came calling, I'd have to say 'Ole! No, but muchos thankos,' lied Rodgers.

"Still, if the Barca bigwigs want any advice on recruiting their next manager, I'll be waiting with my CV, I mean, by the window." Bigtime Brendan is now concentrating on the forthcoming Scottish Cup tie against AFC Cheap Laptops. "I'm so excited, and I just can't hide it," he sobbed into a monogrammed hanky.

not good. I personally think he's one of the most overrated players In recent years.

Hardly, he was a top talent who was ruined by injuries. Think he could still become a decent player if he sorted his injuries out, which he's showing at Bournemouth.

How about Pardiola?

"If Sampaoli has an offer from Barça, he will leave, don´t have any doubts. He told me that is obsessed with coaching Messi".
Maldini is a very famous periodist expert in international football

Among those rumoured to succeed Lucho, the Argentine & Bielsa disciple is the one I would prefer but he still represents a risk even for this disastrous board owing to not being from Barcelona and having little experience in Europe

Sadly he's become the scapegoat of all our problems, which isn't really fair because he hasn't been any worse than Rakitic, Iniesta, Busquets, Rafinha, Denis or Turan. They are all very poor at the moment with the occasional good performance in between, which isn't any different to Andre. Unfortunately, he's suffering from the pressure that comes with a high price tag and not being established at the club.

Incredible performance, though I feel it was more PSG that lost the game than Barça that won it, if you know what I mean. I don't even think Barcelona played that well, Neymar aside. Still, that type of performance in a CL tie is impressive.

Just 3 weeks back, Barcelona were trailing behind Real Madrid in the league by quite a margin and looked like certainly heading out to the CL as well. They only had the Copa Del Rey as a consolation. Now, they are right back in all the competitions and will be super high on confidence as well. They could be thinking that another treble is not out of their reach now.

Luis Enrique would be the first manager in the history to win 2 trebles in just 3 seasons.

Yeah, it begs the question as to why it took them 88 minutes to start playing well. The five minutes of added time was a gift and they'll be found out against teams with more European pedigree.

If he's wins three competitions this season. They're a long way away from achieving that. There peformances this far suggest they won't do it.
It was the same case 2 seasons back as well.

Copa del rey is already in the bag and madrid are begining to stutter in the league.

That would be some record. In fact, I can't recall any manager who has won 2 trebles (CL, League title and main domestic cup) apart from Jose with Porto and Inter.

I'd argue that while that season saw a mid (around January) season resurgence, they are a much more vulnerable team now. Their control over games is much lesser, and teams are regularly able to disrupt their rhythm by pressing them high up the pitch and putting their weak (as per crazy good team standards) midfield under pressure. It feels similar to that season in the way their fortunes in multiple competitions are rapidly improving but I think they're weaker now.

Of course despire that's you just never know and maybe Messi Neymar and Suarez will do it again.

Yeah they do seem weaker than two seasons back. That said, Winning the CL is just 5 games away (ofcourse they could very well draw Bayern next and crash out but...) and their league seems much easier this season since Athleti have fallen off. Not to mention the players would be fighting to give Enrique a grand sendoff.

I don't really see their come back in la liga as a sign of improvement. Madrid have been comically bad in the last few weeks.

The candidates not named Jorge Sampaoli don't excite me. The only concern with Sampaoli was the possibility his team would have a late season fade out akin to Bielsa's teams.

Would you say that there are signs that this might be happening now to Sevilla?

Sevilla pressed like madmen in the first half of the season but now that pressing game seems gone and resort to sterile passing. 3 matches without winning and not giving good sensations. Even before yesterday's match their form was worrying a lot of people. Wouldn't be surprised if Atlético finish above them

Yeah the performance yesterday was shockingly poor in comparison to some of the games I saw them play earlier in the season, some of which were breathtaking.
I just wouldn't know, with the few games I saw, whether it's a trend/pattern or whether they're just inconsistent. You reckon it's a pattern, then?

I haven't watched all their games this season but if the recent results and performances don't pick up, then it will look like a late season fade out Bielsa style. Maybe with players used to a pressing game, it can be sustained over the course of a season.

Apparently there's questions being asked of them signing an 11 year old Brazilian?
If true they have to be the worst run club in world football.

Barcelona needs a change.

Given how successful Barca has been under Luis Enrique it's a bit unfair to blame him for their recent stutters. However, his over reliance on the front three has caused issues.

Barcelona's once almighty midfield has been gutted. Barcelona is now 3 forwards and back up. The rest of the team is focussed on getting the ball to Messi, Neymar & Suarez asap. The patient, controlling midfield play of yesteryear is gone. When Barca's players need to do it it's almost like they've forgotten how.

The system Barca uses plays to the strengths of its forwards, and as its won them a treble you can't argue. Yet, I feel, the Barca that ruined us at Wembley six years ago had a better balance. They could kill you fast or quick. Today's Barca only drives in 5th, and if they can't get going they stall.

It'd never happen but I'd love to see Barca managed by El loco Bielsa.

Their era of dominance looks to be over, they've been struggling for a while now but Messi and Neymar have been papering over the huge cracks, doesn't look like even they can manage that anymore. They need to genuinely replace half their squad, a new RB, new LB, a CB or two, someone to replace Iniesta, an improvement on Gomes, a GK and backup for their front three.
