FC Bayern Munchen vs. Manchester United

Louis Van Gaal looks like Beaker from the Muppet Show.

Neville - Ferdinand - Vidic - Evra

Carrick
Fletcher - Scholes
Nani ----------------------- Park

Rooney

------------------------------------------
Kuszczak; Evans; Rafael; Gibson; Valencia; Giggs; Berbatov

I think Park is a must for this game and Nani is playing too well to leave out. Carrick/Fletcher/Scholes is a quality midfield and so that means Valencia will have to miss out. Park and Nani can and will switch wings during the game, I'd imagine. We're amazing away from home in Europe. I'm predicting a 2-1 win with Rooney to score a brace.

Robben's wing twin Franck Ribery is more likely to be involved despite a nagging ankle injury, although goalkeeper Jorg Butt seemed to suggest Bayern would adopt a cautious approach, possibly more geared towards preventing United bagging an away goal rather than worrying too much about whether they find the net themselves.

Bayern might park the bus if their wingers are limited or out.

Neville against Ribery? ffs we dont want a rape pls.

Rafael is fresh and fast to cover that side.

All for youth and quickness and shit, but this game is not one for you to to feck around with some teenager. You need experience head at RB. With Valencia helping out, the right wing will not be a problem.

Bayern are focusing way too much on Rooney in the build up to this.

Bayern has done a lot of talking to my surprise. I even find some bothering on arrogance.

That's their way. But this time they need to talk themselves up. That said, what I have seen more of in what they have been saying is fear on their part.

I think they are well aware that the difference in class if United play up to their best is huge. They only have 3 world class players in Robben, Ribery and Lahm and the former is recovering from an injury which should reduce his effectiveness. The supporting cast to those 3 is, frankly, mid table premier league standard and if on song I think we could put this tie to bed tonight with a fairly comfortable win by a couple of goals.

Lahm used the word great 4 times in 18 seconds to describe United when he was interviewed after the draw. That says it all to me and we should capitalise.

That said, it's cup football and Bayern could raise their game for two matches, but I would be sorely disappointed if we didn't win this tie comfortably.

clueless

Neville will start and although I don't like his tache either, he will start because he is still easily our best rb

He's easily our most 'experienced' right back, but I'm not sure he's currently on the best form of those available. Against players with the pace of Ribery and Robben, Neville could well struggle. Evans has got a bit of European experience now, having played in a few big away ties over the last couple of years (he was solid at Inter [A] and played well against Villareal [A] last season), and I think it'd be a good challenge for him to play against those players.

It's a tough call, and I'd personally take Evans, but Nev's been there before, and he's still perhaps the best crosser we have in defence. I'd leave Rafael for a tie this major personally. I just think Bayern are so quick on the counter, that when he invariably gets caught out of position at times, we'll probably be properly punished. I think Evans would be calmer with the pressure of the game too. Just my thoughts, anyway.

I think you probably mean "inevitably" but it isn't that inevitable and even then, depends on the circumstances. I think he'll be aware of the threat. Don't recall him getting caught out of position too often and he's still getting sharper and his match fitness improves.

Apart from differences of opinion regarding who is the better fullback, how many times has Evans played rb at top level? At least Rafael is a fullback but I'd still rather Neville but Evans in a game of this importance?

Not a good idea. In fact, a ridiculous idea.

Are there any better conventional wingers out there than the 4 that could potentially be on the pitch at the same time tonight?

No, I mean 'invariably', as in 'without change' or 'constantly'. It happens on numerous occasions most games Rafael plays in (and I struggle to think of a match where he hasn't been caught largely out of position at one point or another). I think 'habitually' would also be suitable for this purpose, if you'd rather I use that?

Evans has had a number of big games at RB, and players can only progress by playing in big games, and like I said, in the European fixtures he's been picked for, he's looked really solid. You seem to see it as if I'm suggesting we should bring in an untried youth player. The arguments you have with Evans inexperience would probably be more appropriate in terms of Rafael's big-game experience (or lack thereof).

Oh, and the fact you've accused everyone who's disagreed with you of 'ridiculous ideas' and being 'clueless' in this thread might make you look like an arrogant cnut. Just a friendly heads-up.

How come the first and second legs are only one week apart. Weren't they two/three weeks apart in the previous round?

Feck me, this next 8 days really is season shaping.

Here it is, the best video ever, courtesy of andr1g in the noobs. Thank you very much for making my day, this video is that good. I'm downloading it here now so I never have to go without it again. Features Sigur Ros and Coldplay.

We certainly can give Bayern a go, compared to Milan, Bayern have a weaker defense and also a weaker MF. If Park goes and stops Van Bommel from starting up their play and hopefully our FB are all over their wingers, we should have lots of chances to exploit their defense and Rooney certainly is in top form, with hopefully Nani and Valencia tormenting them from the wings, the game is ours to lose IMO.

We can't change our lineup based on what the other team is going to do as far as I know. Don't both teams have to give their starting lineups at the same time and only change permissible is due to injury, ruling out the injured player completely?

That neither Park or Carrick started on Saturday and no chance Fletch being dropped - can't see past middle 3 of Fletcher, Carrick, Park.

There's a flaw in your logic here, Valencia and Nani played 90 minutes and either one could be left out for Park, while both Scholes and Giggs were withdrawn, I think Scholes was withdrawn earlier than Fletcher.

Fletcher, Carrick, Park may play, but there's nothing here to guarantee Park in the middle.

For all we know:

Park-Fletcher-Carrick-Scholes-Giggs

isn't completely out of the question either.

I don't think that will happen as I think an eye will be on keeping some players fresh for Chelsea.

People forget that, despite lacking the defensive qualities that most midfielders would need for these occasions Scholes is almost an Away game regular so he'll probably start unless injured. If Park is going through the centre we'll see Fletcher on the flanks, which implies Nani will start on the left at Valencia's expence, though we've seen Fletcher on the left against Milan, with Valencia on the right.

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson admits Kiko Macheda could see action against Bayern Munich tonight.

Although he was used sparingly at the start of the campaign, Ferguson is convinced the teenager has a big part to play over the coming weeks.

"Macheda has had a terrible season with injuries," reflected the United chief. "But he came back on Saturday and I am delighted about that because without question he is one of the most exciting young strikers I have had in my time at Manchester United.

"He has every chance of being on the bench against Bayern because his ability about the box for a young player is outstanding."

Why, check on redcafe of course.

They check on redcafe to see if we've all got them playing in our starting line-ups

I was thinking more along the lines of possible practical jokery. Like putting Rafael and Fabio in bellboy uniforms and having them take peoples' bags up to their rooms.

But the line-ups thing sounds all too possible. Maybe we should oblige them and post some ridiculous ones then. Evra and Rooney on the bench should just about light a fire under their asses.
