Looks like a strong squad... Maybe Rafael will play at RB???

Strong squad indeed. Cant see SAF playing Rafael though so short after his injury. Its between Oshea and Gary imo. I am very positive about this game and think that our bad patch will end there with a superb display of Rooney.

I strongly believe it's O'Shea who will play at right-back. I just can't watch Gary Neville again on this position, he's totally useless, it's sad to write. Our captain can't find his form. O'Shea is much better option to pick against Porto.

Rafael won't play, it's too important game to give him minutes when you have John O'Shea ready to shine.

That's the team right there. Have a horrible horrible feeling we're going out.

Hmm, whatever happens its sure to be dramatic.

Just wish brown was available o'shea it is though, although gary could pull one out the bag. hes got a great cross too.

We need saf to come out and plea for a strong ref do we not, to combat the theatrics that port are sure to display, (spits)

Hers my third attempt

I can't see Gary Neville offering us more than John O'Shea tomorrow.

Gary Neville is slow, unsafe in defence and isn't very effective when it comes to crosses - he did it very well, but before his 'two weeks' injury. He's not the same player and when he's playing he often can't match opponent's strikers, we could see it against Villa and Porto in first leg.

Sheasy has been in better form recently, without any questions.

Its very sad to say but i also think that Gary isnt playing that well since he came back especially against fast players. I havent buried my hopes yet though that he can show a performance that is up there with his best. Maybe tomorrow is the day where he can shine again with some superb crosses into the box he is surely capable of.

Fletcher apparently not in the travelling squad...

I can only hope the journo simply missed Fletcher out (as they are blogging live from their phone...) Fingers crossed.

Rio Ferdinand has been included in the Manchester United squad that travelled to Portugal for Wednesday's Champions League quarter-final second leg.

He missed last week's 2-2 draw with Porto because of a groin injury.

But the 30-year-old England international will partner Nemanja Vidic in the centre of United's defence if he is passed fit for the second leg.

Anderson and full-back Rafael da Silva, who have both been carrying injuries, are also in the squad.

United are aiming to become the first English team to beat Porto on their own ground.

Man Utd (from): Van der Sar, Foster, Kuszczak; Neville, Evra, Ferdinand, Vidic, Rafael, Fabio, O'Shea, J. Evans; Ronaldo, Anderson, Scholes, Gibson, Carrick, Park, Nani, Giggs; Rooney, Tevez, Berbatov, Macheda.

Barbie had been crap + he is not fit. My team

------------------VDS------------------

Gaz---------Rio---------Vidic---------Evra

------------Carrick------Fletch------------

Ronaldo-----------Rooney-------------Nani

------------------Macheda-------------------

You want to start a 17 year old who has played only 40 minutes for us, away in the quarter final of the Champions League in a must win game? A bit to risky for my liking. Experience is all that matters at this stage. Since Giggs didn't start this weekend I'm sure he'll play as well.

I think it's reassuring that already this season [alright twice lol] Anderson has shown that he can put in v.good performances with barely any game time behind him after time out with injury.

I'd have started him anyway, but it seems all the more likely that he will now in any event.

Anyone who as Macheda in their starting line up is nothing more than wishful thinking.

And are spastics.

So you want to play a former winger upfront who had scored just 3 goals in about 20 - 25 appearances? I don't know whether you have noticed but we need goals and Macheda can provide that.

Macheda is tall, he is on form and he is the deadly striker that we need. The team has ample experience with or without Giggsie in it.

He stated why Macheda shouldn't and more than likely won't start. He's 17 years of age and hasn't even played an hour of first team football.

They are good a reasons as any.

Yeah we all know that you can never win with kids....:wenger:

And I say if he is good enough then he is old enough. Macheda is on form and he had saved our arse two times at a row. He is also a striker so that role is natural for him.

We have ample experience with or without Giggs.

No Fletch is a disaster. Funny how he has become so important. He was our best hope of some energy in midfield to close down Porto.

I'm certain he won't start, unless a major injury crisis occurs overnight. Sorry to disappoint.

Whats all this about Fletch not being in the squad? Ive heard nothing about him being injured, so surely its just a mistake with the squad list?

He is crucial to our success in this game I feel.

Difficult this one. If we had two senior strikers in form I'd play 4-4-2. But we haven't, so I'd like to see this team.

(Not that Anderson is in such great shape mind. Actually, that goes for a lot of players)

----------VDS----------
O'Shea--Rio--Vidic--Evra
----Fletcher--Carrick----
----------Giggs---------
Ronaldo--------Anderson
---------Rooney--------

Maybe Berba in for Anderson and Rooney to the left might work as well.

EDIT: Fletcher apparantly not in the squad. Big blow that. Scholes it is then.

if we win we'll kick on and back into form if we lose it wil be a real downer, would be a real shame to go out to a poor team, no matter how well they did at old trafford, arsenal beat this 4-0 and they play in a terrible league every week. we should beat them but we've to get out of the patch we're in:

VDS

O'SHEA
VIDIC
FERDINAND
EVRA - Back on form after a rest, could be the difference

FLETCHER
CARRICK
GIGGS

RONALDO
ROONEY

BERBATOV

I Have a funny feeling Sir Fergie might go with anderson and if he plays like we know he can he could make a big difference.

Come on united, we dont want to watch arsenal or villareal beat these to get to rome!!!

Anyhoot:

----------VDS----------
O'Shea--Rio--Vidic--Evra
----Fletcher--Carrick----
Ronaldo----------Rooney
----------Giggs---------
--------Berbatov-------

Although Rooney and Giggs will obviously rotate.

Tevez, Anderson, Nani and Macheda could have a role to play from the bench.

Personally given that Scholes played a full 90 on sat i reckon SAF will give the nod to Anderson in midfield and have Tevez or Berba up front

Yeah you're right, the old geezer did indeed play the full 90. He probably wont' start then.

Fletcher out is out of the blue.
This one feels like a mission impossible to me in a way, it isnt though but. it will be the end of the world for me as europe has always been my faviourite.

It's going to be a 4-5-1/4-3-3.

Midfield 3 of Fletch/Anderson, Carrick, Giggs

Front 3 of Rooney, Ronaldo, Berba.

They might be wrong though, they said Berbs wasn't in the traveling squad to play Sunderland t'other day.

I read your posts and if you think Macheda should start against Porto, away from home, in a match when we need to win (or draw, but we have to scored three goals), at very difficult stadium to play - you are stupid. I love this guy, because I watched some games in Academy and Reserves, it's always nice to see when a guy younger than you make a good impact, but it's too early for him. He just won't bring us any new qualities.

I just don't believe we will see Macheda in the starting line-up, when we have Rooney, Tevez and Berbatov fit. Possibly later in the game, when strikers get injuries or the result won't be good for us.

This season Fletcher is unbelievable, but I don't think we'll miss him tomorrow. Anderson of course won't win this game for us easily, because 'he was Porto player two years ago'. He's good and I believe if he plays, he'll be very good, but even if Anderson doesn't play good, we have Scholes and Carrick ready to shine and of course Giggsy.

Someone posted a good line-up yesterday.

van der Sar
O'Shea - Ferdinand - Vidic - Evra
Carrick - Anderson
Ronaldo - Giggs - Rooney
Berbatov
I think it may work.

From manutd.com, live blog from Porto:

12:29 (via SMS) Just landed in rainy Portugal (seriously, it's like Manchester outside) and wev'e made our way through customs. Another flight from Manchester - full of fans - has arrived just ahead of us and they're delighted to bump into their heroes.

14:02 Lunch has just been served at our hotel, which is located in the shadows of Boavista's stadium. The Panthers, as they're called, play in the second tier of Portuguese football, in a kit that resembles a chessboard. A quick browse of Wikipedia reveals their goalkeeper is called Britney Spears! Unfortunately it's not true. Remember, kids: don't believe everything you read on the internet! Do, however, log back at about 17:40 when we'll have the latest news direct from Sir Alex's press conference.

When you're talking to someone you really should quote them to make it clear.

Who the hell are you talking too?

Well theres been no news about a injury on Saturday, and no one seems to be reporting that Fletcher has been left at home so it could just be a mistake that no one has noticed him...

If Fletcher really isnt there then i wouldnt mind going for something like this

VDS
Neville Rio Vidic Evra
Ronaldo Carrick Giggs Rooney
Berbatov Tevez

Won't happen. I'm just saying like.... :D

Giggs will play as he was rested on the weekend, and probably anderson as well because of his experiance of playing at Porto.
