Frank Lampard | Former Chelsea manager

Lampard did a decent job because I don't particularly rate this Chelsea squad highly, I for one believe he can grow into the role of Chelsea manager and definitely do better next time but I hold similar view of Ole as well and certainly don't subscribe to the view that even with decent backing that can't Challenge Liverpool and City.
I think next season gonna be cracker .

It's amazing how people make so many excuses for Lampard when he took over the team that finished 3rd and won Europa league, lost Hazard but signed Pulisic, players like James, Mount, Tammy retured but Ole got so much crap when he had to rely on players like Lingard, Pereira, in attacking position for half a season, lost Pogba for most of the season (started just 13 games), lost Rashford and Martial for couple of months when he already trimmed the squad to get rid players like Lukaku and Sanchez.

All things considered Lampard did good job but it's amazing how one is given all the excuses possible and other gets so much shit.
 
People seem to underestimate how vital Hazard was to chelsea. Chelsea heavily depended on him for goals and assists in Sarri's season, he contributed to over 50% of Chelsea's goals the season he left, he essentially carried the team to the Europa leage and 3rd.

No one saw where Chelsea's goals were coming from, Willian and Perdro lack productivity and end-product. Giroud hadn't scored more than 10 in a season, Pulisic had question marks about him, he had lost form and his place at Dortmund to an 18 year old before joining Chelsea.

Only signing Lampard made was making the Kovacic loan permanent, and Kovavic was so sup par under Sarri that most of the fan base didn't want him permanently.

Also the fact that Lampard was only in his 2nd year of management with a transfer ban was the reason a lot of people had chelsea finishing out of the top 4.
 
I think Lampard has done ok overall, after starting with the handicap of a transfer ban and losing Hazard, and given how inexperienced he is. However this wasn’t a strong league, and unlike us, Chelsea went backwards as the season progressed rather improved. Add in the fact that he seems to have brought all the defensive deficiencies of his Derby days with him and I’d say there’s a lot of work to do next year. Another season like this would be deemed a failure.

I think Lampard is making his defenders look worse than they are. He is still A bit too gung ho in his approach. His defenders get involved in attacks very high up the pitch way too often. Even having a shaky goalie department hasn't helped


I also think it's down to managerial in experience. He will learn how to manage the balance between his attacking instincts and his team defending better as he grows in his career. He has shown signs of this against team he has thought could hurt him this season at times

1. For all the crap that Sarri got from the press, fan base and punditry. Chelsea still finished 4th and won the Europa league. Lampard was not inheriting a poor squad. He infact inherited a squad that had been playing with the hand brake on. Yet it was still to be strengthened by a talented loan at of players. Plus permanent additions of Kovacic and Pulisic.

2. It is true Hazard carried Chelsea the previous season. Yet still it had a lot to do with how Sarri set up. Under Conte for example most those same players had more end product. It was not too much of a stretch to expect the goal out put overall to improve under Lampard.

3. There is a myth that has been going around that Pulisic lost his place at Dortmund due to a dip in form. In truth it was more down to his desire to move on. He refused to renew with Dortmund. They put all sorts of pressure on him but he refused to cave. So they then simply pushed Sancho over him.

4. Kovacic may have not been superb in his first year. But only a brave person would have dared think he wasn't an excellent acquisition.

5. The only thing that could have reasonably worried people was Lampard's in experience as a boss. But the fact that Chelsea had a transfer ban and were determined to finally give their youth and loan army a chance. After seeing how the likes of Tomori and Mount faired under him and Morris at Derby, In my opinion, there was a lot to be excited about Chelsea.


Lampard definitely deserves credit for a job well done. But I don't agree he had it worse than his counterpart Solksjaer. I personally expected him to finish ahead of Spurs this season. I'm actually not surprised at all that it happened. He simply justified the faith the Chelsea owner rightly had in him in my book.

and this for me is where Chelsea's downfall will be, they don't be seem to be targeting defensive players either. Maybe by the end of the window they'll have upgraded their defence but if they don't they'll have another inconsistent season even with better attackers.

Fair assessment. It's worth noting that Chelsea have finished level with Liverpool in the xG table. Their performances have been far superior to last season's. And with some smart signings (well, a goalkeeper) they should be able to overtake them next season and aim for a second place finish as City are too far ahead of the competition. I also have to say that I did not see this coming. I didn't really like Lampard's Derby at all.

Yeah, he has done good job but some of the stuff is overblown. He has made them good attacking team though, they looks more comfortable going on attack mode vs big teams.

Everything Lamps does is magic but every little good thing Ole does is shaded by the criticism to the smallest thing. To the point of saying why is he looking at the screen instead of shouting near the line and the sort.
 
No one seems to be talking about the fact that Chelsea were miles ahead of Utd at new year and yet we have still managed to finish ahead of them. Lampard hasn’t done bad, but they have lost 13 times, can’t see him improving enough to do anything meaningful.

A ban that saw them sign two players. Most clubs rarely sign more than 3/4 players in a window but Chelsea saw several return on loan and had new players. Had they not signed anyone I would be more sympathic
 
Lampard has done well, though it's pertinent to note that he did so with minimal burden of expectations.

Now with the likes of ziyech, werner and harvetz coming in, the expectations will be that much more and so will the expectation to win. It's that pressure that is the real test, in addition to ego and squad management.

I think they've both (Ole and Lampard) done a great job considering it is their first full year/circumstances of each but both have clear faults that will define how their future goes. It's going to be interesting to see if either can address them this summer.

Chelsea has one of the worst defenses in the league (rank 13th) and a shockingly bad keeper (Karma for you, Kepa). If they dont adress those issues they are going nowhere further.

Like the Leicester championship season, this one too has been one that's been full of inconsitency from the entire league bar Liverpool. If the next seasons follows the trend, we'll see a stabilzation and the teams with an actual working back 4 will start seeing more consistent point totals.
 
I give Frank props for having the balls to drop the most expensive goalkeeper in the world for bloody caballero in a massive match like yesterday, if he can do it then I cant see why ole wont man up and do the same with de gea.

Lost arguably the best player in the league - who was by mile the biggest contributor to the previous season's position. For large parts of the season did not have his best attacker (Pulisic), one of the world's best midfielders (Kante), and his best CB (Rudiger). Lampard got a ton of shit for playing Mount regularly and Tammy. You are obviously more tuned to the shit Ole gets, but Lampard's saving grace was somehow getting a side with not many potential goals to score more than expected.

Ole also sold Lukaku and relied on Martial and Rashford who never lead the attack or scored more than 10 league goals, we lost Pogba for whole season, our best LB played 50% of total mins, our best CM played 30% of total mins, we lost Rashford and Martial at different periods, which means we had 1 good attacker in the team. We also lost Herrera, Smalling this season.

Both team had problems, it was made to sound like Lampard was bringing some mid table punch above their weight and Ole is bringing down some reigning champions.

Like I said, both have done well given different circumstances but the whole narrative is so different.
 
He’s a good young manager. He’s obviously not without his flaws but managers don’t just turn up fully formed. They have to make mistakes and figure things out.

Still, could very well be a fluke of a season, competition for top 4 was very weak this year. Tottenham and Arsenal a complete no show, Utd very bad in the first half, Leicester very bad in the second; very low amount of points needed to get top 4 and it was very very close for them. Couple of spankings he received (Utd or Bayern) has also made him look quite inapt, let`s see if he can deliver more next season given that they`re on quite a spending spree.

This is a good example of why there can be some push back against even sometimes minor Lampard praise on this forum. Too many times this season I've noticed a good thing Lampard has done, big or small, used, by other United fans, as a stick to knock Ole with.

Well sure if you're new to the league, playing some entertaining stuff and unable to plug holes in your side like Utd with Bruno and Maguire then you'll probably get an easier ride. I still think you're underselling the amount of flak Lampard has received but I get your point.
 
Good job by him. That isn't his team, and he has done really well. I expect them to be busy over the summer still and reach top 4 with ease again next season. If they can challenge, remains to be seen. They are obviously garbage defensively, so depends what they do there in the market.

They will be fun to watch with the attacking and midfield players next season. I expect them to trash plenty of teams.

I haven't seen much criticism by media, maybe in Chelsea forum Im not sure as I don't visit that forum much.

Anyways I have repeated my posts few times already, it's sort of boring to repeat same thing again. Like I said, both did a decent-good job this season.

We don't actually give away that many chances, they just went in due to Kepa having a nightmare season. Look at the difference even an average keeper made yesterday.

I don't think we'll ever see us be completely rock solid under Lampard but things aren't as bad as the GA collum is making it look.

That said we won't be challenging for the league next season, season too soon even if everything goes to plan.

And United are third in one prediction. None of these lot saw Tottenham's drop coming and overrated Arsenal, I doubt they're alone in the first and the second has been going on since the year dot, despite them not having finished top four since 2016. I think people bought Chelsea being in a terrible state far more than was actually true and underrated/doubted the positive effect of Lampard as a relative rookie manager.

For me I think Lampard and Ole have both done well this year but they've been helped by Tottenham leaving the room and Arsenal never having been in it to start with.

Fair play to Gullit for being the only one to have all the right teams in, albeit in completely the wrong order!
 
So far I love Lamprds fight and his passion. Im not worried so much about his tactics, they will evolve and hopefully improve as the years go by.

He came in with 3 deals rubber stamped and no way of making the team his. Sure we used some loan players but how many previous managers overlooked those players?

What you guys might not actually know is that Sarri never once went to watch the reserves. Conte separated the first team from the youth and reserves. Lampard came in and straight away United everyone by reconnecting the first team with the youth and even letting them eat together.

You lot might only see what’s on the pitch but Lampard has done much more in one season than you can possibly imagine. To the point where every single person at Chelsea is working for Lampard to be a success. That is no small feat.

There’s ‘all talk Ole’ creating culture and the United way but what I hear is Liverpool talk. It’s nonsense. Culture is not something you can make. Culture is the embodiment of the community around you and something that comes organically. What you should be asking Ole is, what is his Plan because I haven’t heard it yet.

I would give A if we win on Saturday for sure, would be great season considering the ban, has blended youth in, and his first season in PL.

What I'm wondering about is how we improve the defense next season, will we give minutes to Tomori and Ampadu? Can't see who we can go buy for any kind of reasonable money at CB, also we need a LB, maybe Telles, don't think we have anyone in youth system who can play there.

Yeah, defensively Chelsea are a shambles. For me, Chelsea need a minimum of 1 x GK (maybe even two if Kepa goes as Willy is really a GK3 these days), 1 x LB (who can play in a back 4 system) and 1/2 x CB's.

That consequently means Chelsea need 3-4 more players on top of Harvetz and that is before you get to Kante and his injury record this season. If he doesn't recover, Chelsea may also need a DMF as they've not got much defensive resistance in CM with out Kante.

Personally, I am not sure where they can get all those players. Further Lampard needs to improve tactics when out of possession.

Yeah, for sure Kepa is Chelsea's biggest problem by a mile. If Chelsea sign just a half decent GK then that should provide a minimum of about 9 points. However, to really kick on, Chelsea will need the players I have outlined above and Lampard to adapt his tactics.

This has been apparent for most of the season, I seem to remember Roy Keane pointing it out at some point, too. Anyway, this was confirmed for me yesterday when my mrs (who does not follow football at all) stated 'Frank Lampard has done well as a new manager hasn't he?'. The agenda has been so strong it has trickled down to people who don't even follow the sport.

Why have you assumed Lampard has gone into Chelsea with a super awesome plan and Ole has gone into United on a wing and a prayer? Could it not be they're both doing similar jobs; reestablishing pathways between youth and first teams, suggesting a new blueprint for the kind of players we're both going for in the transfer market and trying to get a different style of football played, all with differing results, setbacks and development timescales?

Anyway, this was confirmed for me yesterday when my mrs (who does not follow football at all) stated 'Frank Lampard has done well as a new manager hasn't he?'. The agenda has been so strong it has trickled down to people who don't even follow the sport.

He has done well as a new manager. Best manager ever? No, nobody is saying that. "Done well" is a perfectly reasonable assessment.

Take the tin foil hat off, there's no agenda. You notice more negative stuff about Ole because you consume far more media about Man United.
