From the Times: United expected to extend Shaw's contract & unlikely to sign Danny Rose

Even as someone who sports a beard, for a professional footballer, Luke Shaw (in that second/right Times pic) looks fecking homeless at times.

He deserves this season but to give him a new contract is madness.
He isn't being given a new contract. There's option of a further year in his contract (like there was with Fellaini) that would be activated on club's end so Shaw doesn't leave on a free transfer.

This is only good news if he actually plays. He's either injured or Jose doesn't play him. If the end result of this extension is we get to see even more of Darmian/Blind on the left and prevents us from buying a LB then it's not really good news.

Ahh I see now that makes sense.

I wasnt talking about my standards. I was talking about people on here saying that Shaw is potentially the best LB in Europe and a talent of a generation. What a crock of s8it
Who said he was? And I agree to an extent as I'm not convinced Shaw has what it takes to make it at Utd. Something seems off with him.

We're not really extending his contract by giving him a new one are we?

The club is just going to exercise its right to trigger the optional clause in the original one (which has been standard policy in recent years under Woodward to retain bargaining value, unless the player in question is abject):
Southampton had rejected United’s initial bid of around £27 million but accepted Shaw’s sale when it became clear he wanted to leave. The fee will rise to £31 million on appearances, while United also have an option on his contract for a fifth year.
Herrera, 27, has 12 months left to run on the deal he signed in June 2014 following his £28.8 million move from Athletic Bilbao, albeit with the option of a further year.
We did the same with Valencia and Fellaini, too:
MANCHESTER UNITED EXTEND FELLAINI CONTRACT
Manchester United have confirmed a clause has been triggered in Marouane Fellaini's contract to extend his stay with the club.

When signing from Everton on the final day of the summer transfer window in 2013, the Belgian agreed a four-year deal with the option of a further year. That has now been taken up, tying him to Old Trafford until at least the summer of 2018.

The midfielder is much valued by manager Jose Mourinho and scored his first goal of the season during the 2-0 win against Hull City in Tuesday's EFL Cup semi-final first leg at Old Trafford, nudging the Reds closer to a place in next month's final at Wembley Stadium.

The 29-year-old has already lifted the FA Cup with United after starting last May's final against Crystal Palace, having previously scored in the semi-final victory over former club Everton.

It's just a contingency measure - if he performs well, he'll have 2 years remaining on his deal - which will give us the room to negotiate a newer one without being pressed into overpaying with the threat of a Bosman transfer. If he doesn't, oh, well, you'll extract decent value given his age and the fact that his contract runs till 2019. Seems like a reasonable deal, all things considered.

Better for him to prove his worth this season because there's really no more excuses this season.

I wouldn't even offer Shaw a Werthers Original until he's proved he can stay fit for longer than 6 months.

I'm all for giving people chances, and after suffering a double leg break, he should get more than most.

But the fact is we can't wait forever for the lad. I'd give him till Feb/March and see how he does.
I do rate him highly, and would love for him to succeed.

How does he prove he can stat fit? Haven't his injuries been impact related?, it's not like he's a sicknote waiting to happen. We have a top quality left back at our club and should do everything we can to make sure he fulfils his undoubted potential.

For those that want to replace Shaw with Rose, have a look at Rose's injury record. 42 league games in the past 2 seasons and those are his two best seasons.

the lack of blood to the groin area sure aren't helping him stay fit too.

His knob and bollocks will thank him if he goes for the slim fit!

New deal, old deal... let's see if the lad can get though Mondays game unscathed as that's his next big hurdle... If the play a well the contracts will follow

Reckon Jose will give him this season to prove himself. If he doesn't play well, gets injured, sell him next season. Fair enough. I hope he can come back and be our starter again, but if he still remains crocked/ doesn't play well, we should definitely sell him and move on. Fullbacks are very important in modern football, and we can't afford to feck around till he gets his shit together.

You are ridiculous lad whoever you are.

You big tough bastard, you'd have finished the 90 against PSV wouldn't you @Ronaldo's Mum Eh?

Do you guys really think Luke Shaw has had the mental strength to play for Manchester United?

He has shown up to preseason overweight at times, and he has never responded to Jose the same way the likes of Mkhi has. Luke Shaw has been a failure so far at this club and he will be shown the door unless he steps it up tremendously this season. I hope he succeeds but the odds are stacked up against him, and he only has himself to blame.

Yep I do, get over it!

Hope he has convinced Jose in his week of training that he is finally ready to step up. The timing of the news seems to suggest that Jose is happy enough with him.

The memory in this forum seems to keep getting shorter. Shaw has amazing potential. He needs patience and support and he will come good.

Great news. He needs to be given more time to establish himself after that horiffic injury. That type of injury takes time to recover from both physically and mentally. As for his laziness, hopefully he is now more mature and understands what is needed for him to play for a club this size. For a short period of time before his injury, he showed how good he can be. With a fit and focused Shaw, we can hopefully have our long term left back for years to come.

I can't believe the nonsense about 'mental strength' he is very young, has great ability, fearless and has all the likelihood of fulfilling his potential, he suffered an awful injury that takes a very long time to fully recover from, the other set backs are unfortunate in terms of him returning fully fit, and there lies the problem, if he does'nt make a successful recovery it will be because of physical, rather than physiological reasons.
