The fan servicey bits are stuff like Bronn getting to be Lord of the Reach, which would make zero sense in the books and be completely illogical. He's nowhere near as big a character in the books and has been given an inflated role in the tv series because he was a fan favourite.

Those kind of details could absolutely be altered. The major plot lines (who becomes king/queen etc) will likely remain the same, so Brann will probably end up as King.

Yes, the reality is that the books will be written exactly the same way as the TV show, because that's how things work and tv/movie directors never take liberties with written material.

GRRM has just remained completely silent on the show because he's just in so much shock at how well they've done with his material.

Very true.

GoT has shifted from being a TV serialisation (early seasons) to being a feature film franchise (seasons 7 and 8). That's why the pacing has changed. It's also why characterisation is handled differently between, say, The Wire and The Godfather.

He's been doing loads of interviews in the last few weeks.

One of the things though, I do think it shows how difficult it is, given that the actual author is struggling to finish his own book. He must have had so many re-writes due to something conflicting with something else. And all that with no constraint or time limit for himself.

What was said earlier in this thread is right, making one change to the story, might just open up another list of complex issues to resolve. Im not saying I have all the answers, and not saying that the finale (or final seasons) are great.

I think having shorter seasons made it impossible to not have time jumps and miss out certain scenes which would have helped the show. But if im looking overall at the series and not individual episodes, I would still give it a 8/10.

Why? The books are completely different from the show and while the ending could be more or less the same, the plot leading up to it will be completely different and a lot more sensible/satisfying.

There was a guy who felt "cheated on by the series", I mean what the feck.
 
I think they saved the best episode of the season for last and brought it all together about as well as they could have. There are still lingering questions from things G.R.R. Martin set up and didn't resolve (the Direwolves; one too many Stark children) as well as bits the TV writers handled clumsily (the Tyrion/Varys 'betrayal' was awkwardly done) but that was a strong conclusion.

No-one can complain they didn't go back to the old talking-rather-than-battling format.

I thought there'd be a need to bring the Wildlings into a more stable relationship with the rest of the kingdoms (with the current North become the Centre). I expected Jon to be chosen to negotiate that, although it looks like maybe he's thrown his lot in with the Wildlings.
 
Yeah, the books shouldnt even come into this. Its a different medium, which I believe has some more characters and hes been 'writing' for years and cant finish it. Most of where the characters end up will prob be the same, journeys slightly altered (esp interactions).

Anyway, the stuff I liked about the episode:
-First 30 minutes (Tyrion walking through the city and then finding his siblings upto Drogon flying off)
-Jon and Ghost
-Edmure still being a jobber. Jobber until the end.
-Sansa being Queen of the North
-Brienne writing Jaimes chapter.

I don't think he even wrote the books in the first place. Pretty sure he had a ghostwriter who must be dead now. Guy is a fraud.
 
Honestly, Arya should have died last episode in the chaos at KL. I don't mind what happened with JS and SS. The Bran as king thing is a bit of a head scratcher and it feels like it's leading up to dine machiavellian twist.... but it obviously isn't so whatever. The episode was incredibly underwhelming, but I won't lose sleep over it.

Wow what a disappointment.

I actually thought the season leading up to the final wasn’t too bad but the last episode was terrible which has left me really fecking pissed off.

It feels like they made decisions based on ‘they’ll never expect this!’ rather than writing a good ending, it was absolute dross.

The way they killed ‘Deny’ within the first 15 minutes without much commotion then skipped weeks in advance to a fecking stupid meeting appointing a new king is good indication that they hadn’t a fecking clue how they wanted this to end.

In the sense how much time and emotions people invested in the Game of Thrones universe and the writers bascially just discarded the series to work on Star Wars.

It's fair to say that Jon has renounced his pledge to the Night's Watch and will now be hunted down by whoever the Lord Commander is. But since he's now the King Beyond the Wall he'll rise his army up against the Watch and attack the wall. Then he'll get burned at the stake only to come out of untouched. At this point he will take off his face to reveal that he is Jaqen H'ghar and Ghost will remove his face to reveal that he is Arya, and boat Arya will remove her face to reveal that she's Bran, and King Bran will remove his face and reveal himself to be Ned and he'll kill Sam for leaving the Night's Watch.

I think it was pretty clear that Jon was giving the Night's Watch the finger and fecking off with the Wildlings.

They're the people he felt most connected to and they love him because he saved them all. Nobody is going to go chasing him.
 
I'm suprised some people are so disappointed. I expected there to be controversy but I thought it went well.

The books have become irrelevant so far as the show goes, and that isn't the fault of the TV writers.

For me the episode hinged on whether on not Dany got away with it (just because it would have been incredibly frustrating and she's been a murderous nutter for a while now) and she didn't. The episode relied a lot more on personal loyalties and scheming that the battles people have been complaining about.

The first five seasons of the show had a story like this;

"I got in my car but didn't put my seat belt on. I kept looking at my phone as I drove the wrong way down the motorway. I got hit and my body was flung through the windshield".

Seasons 6-8 have been more like;

"I got in my car but didn't put my seat belt on. I kept looking at my phone as I drove head first into a hurricane that was on fire and killers bees that were on fire came at me, at which point my friend who had been in the car this entire time but I didn't mention them said to me 'look out for those flaming bees cause they'll kill you'. Cut to three hours later and we got out of the car and had some crisps"

Yeah he really "gets" it, hasn't paid enough attention for 8 seasons to know that it's Dany instead of Deny and that she wasn't killed within the first 15 minutes at all either.

I know what you mean. But try re-watching ep 5 immediately before the finale. The flow works much better.

But I take your point about that scene feeling jarring in a stand-alone episode.

The time skip and Bran scenes were poorly realised, I agree.

I mean he's probably just never seen the name written down.

He's spot on in most of that post though. The skip from Daenerys dying to the council was possibly one of the most jarring scenes in television, it felt like we switched to a different show entirely.

Well one interpretation could be him just guiding the Wildlings beyond the wall and then returning. It was probably quite obvious that he was gone for good but I think they were attempting to keep it open-ended.

Maybe it’s all the shite fan theories such as Gendry makes armor for Drogon and Arya takes Jaime’s face to kill Cersei that made this (admittedly disappointing) final season actually seem alright for me.

I thought it was more of a wink wink, nudge nudge thing to let Jon go free and finally do what he wants. The Unsullied seem to accept he was actually joining them (which was laughable), but I thought that was part of the ploy.

That is just the way some people are, especially the fantasy audience. You see the same level of passion and emotional investment in series like LOTR, Harry Potter and even superhero movies albiet to a lesser degree. Its not a new phenomenon. The problem hardcore fans have is not with the storylines, its with the level of commitment shown by the writers.
