I'm glad someone is willing to admit the real reason we've all been watching this show.
Well ultimately that was one possibility. The other was ‘putting over’ how awesome one of the main characters has become after her long, tortuous journey. For a show that’s incredibly miserable at times, I found it a breath of fresh air to see the ending they chose.
Nah. The white walkers have been a known dark and powerful entity from the pilot onwards. It's the way it was hyped and built up in the tv show which resulted in ultimately nothing more than a population thinner mechanic and it didn't even result in a main character dying. That's my beef. It was a pretty big waste of time ultimately. I mean those of us who enjoyed the white walker storyline will feel short changed and I just hope they don't do the same with the rest. Hopefully we get a top send off. I don't want you guys to feel like I am right now.
A lot of that is probably down to the nature of adapting the books to TV tbf.
In the books you can build up the WWs as a major threat without either a) having to actually see them, b) taking up more than a fraction of the narrative or c) having to resolve the storyline while hampered by budget.
Whereas the nature of TV means that to establish the storyline as a threat you have to see them (thus making the NK an actual character), you take up a much greater proportion of storytelling time (thus making them feel more hyped) and are ultimately limited in the scale of what you're actually able to show in the resolution of the WW threat. All of which probably makes an anticlimax more likely.
Also, the show is by its nature very set-piece orientated, which leads to it feeling we've had a lot of build up for Event X and are now resetting for Event Y. Whereas in books one can bleed into the other more naturally.
Maybe it's the whole Arya vs the waif thing all over again where the fan theories ended up being better than than the end result but I think it will be disappointing if it ends just on Cersei being defeated. Jon doesn't want the throne but something might end up twisting his arm. And at any rate he can't be any more useless/inconsequential than he was in that last episode, so there must be something more for his character to do other than simply to help Dany. Also, Bran is now redundant if there's no more night king/white walker stuff.
Another poster said it was in the behind the scenes part. I confess I haven’t seen it yet, but either way, it’s a perfectly viable possibility. It’s way the Dothraki do.
I would’ve preferred him to unveil his entire plan at the end, giving Jon just enough time to slip away from the dragon and have an epic sword fight with NK, all the while spitting witty one liners (it’s time to put you on ice) at one another.
No way in hell, the NK gets a 9. Other than killing Theon, he virtually did f*** all else. When going towards Brann after killing Theon, he was as slow as Nemanja Matic. Could have won it there and then for the Whites, but he f***** up!

I see it as more likely that Jon and Dany will marry like Tyrion and the others suggested thereby uniting Ice and Fire with a Stark and Targ ruling. Maybe it's too much of a happy ending.
Personally at this point I feel it would suck to have Jon or Dany die. If I had to choose, then just Dany, because she's in it for power while Jon is a shit leader with a good Heart.

Aye but you think you'd be a little bit less hasty to go with your standard tactic when you're charging in to a black void that you surely know is filled with hundreds of thousands of zombies, a giant, an ice dragon and ancient magical beings.
I blame Melisandre. Lighting up those arakhs was what got them all fired up for the charge, and she surely know they were going to get fecked up.

Their horses were pretty chill about the conflagration too. That could easily have gone horribly wrong from the outset.
I fecking hate Bran aka Captain Hindsight. He's that mate that watches a big twist and says "I knew that was going to happen".
He's even worse than Uncle Benji aka Captain Convenient. Just turns up when the writers write themselves into a corner.

Personally I just wish there weren't so many fakeouts during the fighting. You really shouldn't remind people that characters can die if you're not going to kill them. Fakeouts are usually the lazy way of showing fear and stressing your audience out. Sapochnik did that in the previous scenes without having to use them so feck knows why they turned up.

I know I’m late to this but I’ve seen lots of moaning re dragon fire not killing the NK and saying it’s illogical (in a fantasy show)

I wouldn't call Theon or Jorah top tier characters, they're second tier characters for me. Top tier characters = Starks, Lannisters, Daenerys.
The NK took out Wun Wun, Hoder and a dragon.

I dunno about that, Theon especially has shaped the plot. If it wasn't for him Bran would never have gone north and Ramsey would never have taken Winterfell, he was a vital player in what happened and if Yara come back into play, even more so.

Not entirely relevant but Jorah and Theon come in 9th and 10th on the list of characters based on screen time. More than people like Bran, Varys, The Hound and Brienne. For some reason Hot Pie has been in it more than The Night King before the start of the season. Unless the Night King was in it for more than five minutes then Hot Pie is still in the lead.*vomits*
You can argue Theon is a main character, i'll give you that. Pre episode if you said Theon was the biggest character to die I think most would be disappointed. It does make me think that the majority of the characters from this point onwards will probably survive the final episode. We'll have a few that will die but nothing major, I always assumed this fight would be a Red Wedding/Sept of Baelor type moment and thin out the characters a bit to allow them to focus on the main plot points.
Also think it pretty much guarantees that Samwell Tarly and Gilly/Little Sam survive the entire show.
After critizising the battle tactics, which I still think was over the top bad, I've been considering the possibility that they've made them bad on purpose.
A running theme throughout the show has been to kill off everyone remotely capable of leading a battle, espescially the heads of the biggest house from each part of the world; Oberyn and the prince from Dorne, all the Baratheons, Ned and Robb Stark + their advisors and the Karstarks, Umbers, Boltons the Freys and the Tullys, the Tyrrells, the Tarleys, Tywin and his brother (and they earlier destroyed the second largest house in the westerlands). Also lord commander Mormont and the king of the Iron Islands.
Of those left who could lead armies were Jamie, who was critized by his father for spending most of his life as a glorified bodyguard and maybe the commander from the Vales, although they lost their leader, Arryn, and didn't really take part in any battles.

Speaking of which, has he actually impacted the story at all? I struggle to think of anything that wouldn't have happened without him, sam would have figured Jon out and Arya would likely have got LF. Jaime is pointless at this point.
