Gareth Bale is...The most expensive player ever?!

The keeper had a shocker on both of them, I mean the movement of the ball was off putting but a top class keeper should do much better with them.

Even so he's clearly got up a level recently, I'd take him.

Second one maybe, but 1st one don't think he had a chance.

This is the case for most of the goals that come from free-kicks. However, give the lad some credit where it is due. The idea is to get the ball on target and make the goalkeeper work, not hit the wall and waste it. He had a plan, he knew where he wanted to hit it and it went in not once, but twice.

He has gone to that level now, where you just expect him to score. That Ronaldo like feeling when he is going to strike the ball at a crucial time.

Has he?

He's never been a consistent goalscorer. Seems to go through patches. And he's not a deadly finisher by any stretch of the imagination. Let's see if he can maintain this run of goals over an entire season.

10 goals for us now in our last 10 games, and 17 for the season so far.

I can hear the sound of Snake Plissken paddling ever more furiously up De Nile.

I think we'll break the bank for him in the summer. Based on nothing really I suppose, just a gut feeling.

I can see Nani leaving, as well as Giggs calling it quits, so the spot will be there.

I would be very surprised if Giggs quit. He is addicted to football and he is still producing. I do think that SAF will be looking at Bale as the player to put us amongst Europe's top 3 again. If we signed Bale in the summer I don't see how we would not retain the title.

I like the way people think he's suddenly just become good at free kicks.

He's always been a free kick specialist, he was scoring them for Southampton when he was 16. The difference now is that he can either curl them or strike it with the laces like tonight.

Can't see it happening personally, at least while Levy is there and I haven't heard he intends on going anywhere, seems to resent selling to us

How would you feel if Spurs sell him at the end of the season? Let's say he goes for £60m, you could use that money to strengthen your squad for the 2013/14 season.

It would have to be an insane bid on our part. It is unlikely but I think that he is a special player, we ought to at least try.

He'll go for around £40m I imagine. It's never as much as people like to make out. Real would pay that for him I suspect, and he'd choose them over City no doubt. I think he would probably choose Real over us too if it came down to it, he seems the type to play abroad. Also, I just can't see us smashing our transfer record to land him.

Our transfer record is what 32m? I bet that SAF would take him in a heart beat for 40m. We were going to pay 33m for Hazard and 30m for Lucas!

This is why I made the Juninho comparison earlier. Ronaldo is the best at striking the ball in a straight line, but Bale is getting better and better at that too. However, he, as you rightly pointed out, is pretty good at curling them too. This is why Juninho became the best free-kick specialist ever. He is and will always be my hero.

If Torres was worth 50m this guy is worth more. Real will probably pay 60m or somewhere near there

Difficult question.

One the one hand, even for £60m there's a big part of me that would rather keep him for another season. That's provided we qualify for next season's CL: we made the QFs last time and I'd like to see if we could better that.

And after all I wouldn't see his price dropping between now and a year this coming summer. If anything it might increase further.

On the other hand, we've continued to improve generally despite losing Carrick, Berbatov, Modric and VdV in recent years. So I'm pretty sure that - with £60m to allow us to improve the squad hugely, especially in the striker department - the same would be true even without Bale.

Basically, £60m might be a tipping point bid, even for Levy. Some on here will say that £60m is OTT, but I certainly don't see Levy selling for £50m - not with a world class talent like Bale and not when Torres went for that figure and Carroll for only 15m less.

Was never comparable to Nani. Always a much better player.

Not always. On his day Nani is still a magical player but Bale is more consistent right now, the talk about his future is not affecting him. It's affecting Nani by the look of it.

Weren't we after him before he opted for Spurs? Think he'd be an upgrade over our wingers despite being so one-footed

Aye, poor keeping for both.

"We tried to buy him from Southampton and they turned us down. It was not the boy who turned us down, it was Southampton. Then a few weeks later he signed for Tottenham," said Ferguson.

"It happens. You don't get them all. As I said before, we would have loved to have got Gascoigne but we didn't."

£50 million will get snapped up, primarily because Levy will have no idea if that figure will be available again. There's no guarantee Bale will want to remain at Spurs for the remainder of his career - regardless of what he says. There could be a danger you are forced to sell him for far less than his value.

Torres at his best was worth 50, though at his best he was better than Bale.

Torres was at his best for 1 and a half season though. After that he lost his pace and went down 2 levels even before Chelsea bought him.

That would be the worry with Bale too, i guess.

Bale will do what most players do these days. He will run his contract down to his final year and then go for 25 million or slightly more.

He's signed until 2016 last summer. I'm not sure going to play for Spurs two more full years after that. I think he'll want out before.

Levy will block him for a summer or 2 demanding Crazy fees after which he'll have a below average season and go for a lower price like Modric did.

For every Torres/Carroll scandalous fee you've got Kagawa/Hernandez/Cazorla for relative peanuts. You can't use such examples. Nobody's paying 60 for him, unless desperate or stupid and loaded. £40 million would be about right and that's not downplaying him one bit.

You realise there's now probably at least six immensely wealthy clubs who are right now seeing Bale as THE signing they want. None of them are going to want to piss Levy off and risk losing out, so a figure as low as £40m won't even be the opening bid ...

... because there's no question he's the hottest property in world football.

Why would Spurs sell? You need special players if you want to be regulars in the champions league and compete for the league. Reinvesting the money in the squad won't give you the same impact a player like Bale does. And I don't even like Bale.

Even if Spurs didn't want to sell, presumably Bale would eventually force their hand for a big club and big money.

Levy's a cnut. If Bale has a long-term contract, I'd expect him to sell him with only 1 or 2 years left. Spurs need to keep him and reinvest - become regulars in the CL and he might stay.

I don't see Bale leaving with just one year left, Levy will want to recoup as much money for him as he can get and if he just has one year left, most clubs would wait rather than paying the big £50m+ fee. He will either leave this summer if Spurs don't qualify for the CL or next summer as Madrid will probably beckon.
