Gareth Bale is...The most expensive player ever?!

Perez has already won the Real Madrid election - he ran unopposed.

I'm not sure where this £85m figure comes from. The closest I've heard to that in Spain (apart from papers reporting the Sunday Times article) was Madrid worrying that interest from United and Chelsea might push the price to £70m - that is about 85m Euros and that Levy would keep the negotiations going all summer.

Assuming the move does happen, do people think bale would do well there?

Imo madrid is completely different animal to spurs, bale is a top class talent but i think he'll fail miserably at madrid, just my gut feeling.

Depends on how they use him. You won't get his very best football with Ronaldo still there. They play similar roles and I don't think teams can afford to have two of these players. He would still be a good winger there though.

His attributes will translate to any team in any league. It doesn't matter what country or team you play your football in, if you can apply such amazing shooting and crossing technique whilst travelling at that speed.

On the break he's lethal, as we saw at Old Trafford. But as we saw in the last weeks of the season, even when team park the bus, he will still punish you by curling one in from long distance.

Ultimately hes very fast and has an amazing technique when it comes to striking the ball. He'll succeed anywhere.

The pace is slower in la liga and that won't fit him well, of course he's capable of curling a great shot but that's not his main game, i think he'll find it very difficult.

The pace of the game will make no real difference. The Italian league is even slower and he absolutely destroyed Inter Milan when they were European champions.

Anyway, Madrid counter attack at lightening speed, so he'll be perfectly suited. But that doesn't matter, as his technique when striking the ball, either to shoot or cross is magnificent.

Anyone who doubts Bales ability to play in another league is way over complicating things. His key attributes are so utterly basic and his game is so direct, that it wont matter where he is playing his football. The combination of incredible athleticism and amazing technique is like the holy grail of football. To put it simply his key attributes are running really fast and kicking the ball with power and accuracy better than virtually anyone in the world. These are the 2 most basic elements of the game and if you excel at them both, you'll be able to play anywhere.

I can understand when people discuss how most other players games will translate in different leagues, but when a player excels in areas of the game than are so primal, then I think we start to lose sight of the basic objective of the game. As long as the pitches are roughly the same size, the balls are the same and the opposition have 11 players on their team, then anyone who can run that fast and combine it with that level of technique will succeed.

Couldn't disagree more with that.

Quality is quality - he's big, strong, fast, can go past you if you get close, can hurt you if you stand off. He's not the finished article yet but for me he'd do well anywhere.

If he goes to La Liga, he'll score more than Neymar does in the same period of time.

I hope Real bid soon as I think it will force our hand.

We won't win a bidding war against Real and Bale won't choose us over them.

He seems to adore Ronaldo, he'll be offered higher wages there, won't need to anger Spurs fans as much as if he'd stayed in England and he doesn't have to deal with them anyway being far away in Spain.

Have you ever seen Navas in the flesh? He's about 5' 6", 10st and 27 years old.

Are we not in the Bale thread?

Perhaps I've misunderstood. Being in the Bale thread I naively assumed that's who he was talking about.

I see it as completely the reverse.

Odds on sky bet for Bale to join Madrid this summer have been slashed to 1/1 apparently. If they are buying that feck stick then the least they can do is sell us back Ronnie.

The original story comes from a Spanish agent called Francois Gallardo who told a radio station that the deal to Madrid was done and would be closed officially this week. However in previous groundbreaking rumours he has also placed John Terry in Valencia, Drogba in Barcelona, and Guardiola in City. He'll guess right (in the end) I expect.

By that logic, they basically view Bale to be as good as Ronaldo when they bought him. Levy really must be licking his lips

what gareth bale has done to get that world record price tag? he is worth 40 million pound at the most imo.

a player who can be one of the best in the world, even one of the top 5 but still needs to prove himself at the biggest stage, for a club football that is the champions league.

80m is a ridiculous price. He's good, but not good enough yet to demand a fee like that. I'd be happy for us to fork out something around 50m for him, and I'd say that we're well capable of offering that.

Maybe they're using it as a counter negotiating tool against Ronny? i.e if you don't sign your contract well just replace you? Not sure why else he'd want to open his gob and push up the price.

Fwiw, I think a front trio of

Ronaldo-----Rooney------Bale would make for a devastating trio, especially on the counter. We all know Rooney's selfless enough to let those 2 shine!

I would easily spend £60-70 mil on Bale - with the financials deals we have in place, we can probably afford it. Then sell Anderson and apparently Nani and buy a classy midfielder and we would challenge for C.L

So, you're saying Madrid will go for both Bale AND Rooney?

bizarre that Zidane would go out and say stuff like that - hardly strengthens Reals negotiating stance.

Maybe they want to make sure that the whole world knows that signing Bale is a way bigger transfer than Barca signing Neymar or Bayern Götze. Perez probably enjoys spending record breaking fees more than watching great football and is going insane right now, because other top clubs made marquee signings that are very hard to top. I can't think of another reason why Zidane would say stuff like that, it's crazy.

80m is a ridiculous price. ....

80m? meh ... Perez has moved the goalposts since then - £85m (€100m euros) is the latest benchmark:

"Florentino Perez has done a lengthy interview with today's Marca .... The Spanish newspaper put over the possibility of Gareth Bale and what they consider to be a ridiculous asking price of €100m and suggest that this may put Perez and Real Madrid off the deal. The president disagreed and said that when you have a super footballer, one of the very very best, then paying such a huge fee can be justified. He says he's learnt this since taking over the presidency and has seen it with other players....."

So the circus continues. Meanwhile, on a beach somewhere in the Bahamas, Levy yawns and turns over in his hammock for another snooze ....

Yes, you're definitely going to be offered £85m for Bale and yes, the amazing Daniel Levy wouldn't care about such offer.

Yeah, and they'd refuse a bid that's more than a half of their annual turnover and even more than a record fee we got for a superior player in 2009. That's how Spurs roll.

I've simply relayed a report in Marca - I don't recall saying we're definitely going to be offered anything. As for Levy, I'm suggesting that he won't lose any sleep over anything that emerges from the RM circus.
