Gareth Bale is...The most expensive player ever?!

I've simply relayed a report concerning Marca and Perez - I don't recall saying we're definitely going to be offered anything. As for Levy, I'm suggesting that he won't lose any sleep over anything that emerges from the RM circus.

So you don't think you wouldn't accept a £85m bid? Fine, I thought you were going crazy mental as compared to just mildly mental you've been for the last two years.

"The best left sided player in europe" Some plonker on sky.

And also, hes worth "5 or 6 more times now, then when he was bought," That would mean £25mil to 30mil.

Very good player, would gladly have him at united in a heart beat, but the best left sided player in europe? Do sky just live on hyperboles?

Opening post from 2010. Interesting that back then, very few thought that he was worth 30mil, now he's being talked about in terms of 70mil and upwards

Well the hype was way OTT back then, in fairness. The difference between him as a player and in terms of consistency now as opposed to back then is enormous.

And obviously £70m is absolutely mental money.

Well he still isn't the best left sided player in Europe (Ronaldo, Ribery) but he is well worth that price now obviously. Back then though he was very overrated. I think that was the season he had the two games against Inter and his entire hype was based on that. Pretty sure he won POTY that year despite not doing anything in the league.

He's probably worth around £40m - £45m now but the hype around him drives the market price up by good 50%.

 Good old KP... He's a proper slow poke is Gareth Bale!

He's good but he constantly gets outpaced by every man and his dog which annoys me. For me to consider him on the level sky are rating him, I would have to see him prove he can play like he is for a full season, rather than just parts of last and the start of this.

Bale constantly gets outpaced? Eh? Have you watched Spurs in the last 6months? He's fecking rapid.

He does get constantly out paced. Pace is not an attribute he possess. But why you chose to insult me than express your own opinion is beyond me, it's whats wrong with the football forums in my opinion. Unnecessary.

One of the reasons I was against posting in Alastair's grandstandy(though thankfully failed) attempt at creating a new thread is because that little gem would have been lost.

There was a time when Bale was so overhyped it was ridiculous. I remember my mates absolutely hounding me for stating Nani was better, which he was at the time.

Amazing.

Bale is a cannonball in full flight, he's just a great combination of size and pace. The best way to describe him is he is simply explosive.

He's improved remarkably since then, and delivered consistently. And in the absence of the best player they have had in a long time (Modric) he more than stood up to become their number one player.

Well, not sure about Ribery, he plays in a far better team than Bale does. I think at a top club Bale could be the better of the two.

As an out and out winger, Ribery is far better IMO. A much smarter player on the ball, much better dribbler and has good decision making on top of it all. Provides loads of assists and a decent amount of goals as well. Bale behind the striker is probably better though, because of how good of a goalscorer he's become.

That's because back then he was close to the definition of overrated. He had pace and was clearly a very dangerous player, but tended to go missing for spells and was relying on those occasional one game wonder performances. Teams were able to mark him out of the game without incredible difficulty if they put men on him. He was talented, but now he's proving how talented he is by producing those occasional performances from then a lot more regularly.

Heart of gold: Celebration trademark could earn Bale £3m a year
Michael Regan
Tottenham winger Gareth Bale has applied to trademark his 'Eleven of Hearts' goal celebration into a logo that could earn him £3m a year.
The PFA Player of the Year and Young Player of the year winner has filed an application to the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) to trademark a logo which copies the goal celebration gesture he makes every time he scores, with a number 11 - his shirt number - inside the heart.
The 23-year-old netted 31 times last season for club and country and the celebration has become synonymous with the Spurs star. He first used it in 2010 and revealed afterwards that he did it as a gesture to his childhood sweetheart Emma Rhys-Jones.
A decision will be made on the application in the next two months by an independent tribunal on whether Bale can trademark the logo, but if he is given the go ahead it could earn him £3m a year, according to Nigel Currie, director of sports marketing agency brand-rapport.
He said: "The possibilities are huge for Gareth Bale. Once he has that right he can cash in on it and become a more well-known player.
"A third of his overall income could be made from his image rights, potentially up to £3million a year."
Real Madrid target Bale isn't the first footballer to try to cash in on image rights, with David Beckham famous for doing so, but the 'Eleven of Hearts' logo could be massively

Draw something: Bale's applied for 'Eleven of Hearts' celebration logo

According to the IPO website, Bale has applied to trademark the logo for use on clothing, footwear and headgear as well as jewellery.
He has also applied to use the logo on leather goods, and "animal skins, hides; trunks and travelling bags; umbrellas, parasols and walking sticks; whips, harness and saddlery."
Bale follows footballing stars like David Beckham in setting up brands to cash in on his image rights.
"Beckham does various things for various brands, but having this logo gives you the opportunity to use it as the brand image," Currie added.
"It can appear on any sort of product he wants, so it has massive potential.
"Once you have got something that is readily identifiable with the person and has the potential to be seen by millions every time he scores a goal, then it becomes more and more recognisable globally."

As I recall a lot of people suggested he had the raw talent to be a very good player and to far exceed what he was doing then.

All the people making precisely those points and calling him "overrated" were correct - but they made the incorrect assumption that he wouldnt improve or iron out those flaws. Anyone can (and people generally do) call every talented young player "overrated" because its easy to be critical and point out flaws rather than talk about the positives - especially on sites like this where most fans support one side whom said player doesnt play for.

Pretty sure Pato was 1 of the first i saw do it.

That's Glaston sorted for 2013 Christmas present buying.

He's trademarking that celebration? Didn't he pinch that from Angel Di Maria anyway?

No, you can't trademark a celebration. He's trademarking an Eleven of Hearts logo that's based on his celebration, 11 being his shirt number.

And also how gay the whole thing is on a scale of 1 to 10.

Who the feck would buy a shirt or panties or whatever just because it has an "Eleven of Hearts" logo on it?

Wonder if Giggs would give up his number if he signed?

He's probably waiting for Giggs to retire so he can take over the number without a hassle. Kind of like the Raul-Ronaldo situation at Real. It'd be funny if we manage to sign him and also decide to retire Giggsy's #11.
Pay no attention to me. I'm so bored that I'm commenting on anything and everything.

Not really relevant but that isn't like the Raul Ronaldo situation at all. Ronaldo had to wait a year for getting the #7 shirt, and Raul didn't retire, he was forced out of the club.
