Manchester United are making a massive £60million bid for Gareth Bale.
Premier League champions United want Tottenham star Bale to be the first major signing of new manager David Moyes' reign.
The move for the Welshman is thought to be one of the reasons why United's vice chairman Ed Woodward is returning early from their pre-season tour of the Far East and Australia.
Spurs are desperate not to lose Bale, last year’s Footballer of the Year, and have so far resisted United’s approach.
But the Old Trafford giants are keen to put the damaging publicity surrounding the future of Wayne Rooney behind them.
They know that buying Bale - who has been linked with Real Madrid throughout the off-season - would give Moyes, his players and the United supporters a huge boost.
And his arrival, as well as continued interest in Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas and at least one other high-profile signing, would soften the blow of Rooney's expected move to Chelsea.
United have been quiet in the transfer market so far this summer, but sources close to the club say that is about to change.
There is also continuing speculation about a mega-bid to bring former favourite Cristiano Ronaldo back to Old Trafford from Real Madrid.
But the attempt to prise Bale away from Tottenham is top of the agenda, and United are prepared to smash their £30.8m transfer record to get him.
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is famous for driving a hard bargain and his brinkmanship, but United are keen to seal a deal to prise Bale out of the White Hart Lane club before the start of the season on August 17.
They are aware that neighbours Manchester City have already bolstered their squad with the signings of midfielders Fernandinho and Jesus Navas and are close to recruiting forwards Stevan Jovetic and Alvaro Negredo.
And United are desperate to ensure that they give Moyes complete backing as he attempts to carry on the phenomenal success his predecessor Sir Alex Ferguson delivered.

I'd assume this is the Mirror's stab in the dark with regards to Woodward's return to England, but for a player we've been linked with for so long and wanted (according to Fergie), it's at least worth a discussion.

He'd fit the squad absolutely perfectly right now. He can operate from the left or in Rooney's role and would give us wonderful balance.

I'd love to see Bale here, but I don't see him leaving any time soon. Harry Redknapp did an interview on the radio a while back and talked about how Bale wasn't the most ambitious player he'd ever encountered. I think that has to count against his ability to adapt to being a part of a top end, consistently competitive team. The longer he goes without asking for a move away from what is essentially a Europa League side, the less convinced I'll be about him being a success in the pressurised environments of one of Europe's elite sides. I really hope he doesn't become this generation's Le Tisser.

Don't be silly.

Funnily I've been talking about Bale a bit over the last few days with a few people. He's easily the most gettable player out of the big talents out there and however large an offer it'd take, it'd without a doubt be worth it. Bale is the player we should be smashing our transfer record for.

He'd more than certainly soften to the blow of losing Rooney. Alas, it won't happen. At least not this Summer. Unless United are happy to pay stupid money for him, I doubt it will happen.

With that being said, seeing a front 4 of:

Zaha Kagawa Bale

RVP

Boy, that really does burn the nostrils

I think we're going to make some serious noise in the transfer market soon and Bale would be the most obvious choice. Reckon this is just as good a guess as mine though.

Whatever it is Woodward has flown back for must be pretty close. I'd be amazed if we could wrap up a deal for Bale so quickly with little speculation before hand.

In Redknapp's own words.

Some players just like to be a big fish in a small pond. Bale has had chances to prove he's not one of them, but the more he passes up on them, the more I doubt he has it in him. If he moved this summer I'd change my mind though.

It must be Glaston's night off.

If the money is there I couldn't give an arse how much he costs.

We ain't gonna go bankrupt

Imagine we got bale and fabregas. No transfer window would ever come close ever again.

Actually, seeing as though our current Welsh left winger is moving more into coaching... this could be the perfect time to get Bale. Surely Giggs was an idol to Bale, and now to get coached by him, while getting actual playing time. Would surely be tempting. Just trying to get Levy to sell.

He's worth £50m at least by recent prices. Everyone would be in for him though, Real, Barca, City, PSG the lot. He'd be the perfect player for what we want post Rooney. Someone who can play wide left but also drifts inside and comfortable playing in the hole. Also helps that he scores feckloads of goals and is lightening quick on the counter attack.

We should go in with a 'take it or leave it' offer. If we offer them £60 and they invite offers from elsewhere we should walk away as we should have no inclination to get involved in a long drawn out bidding war.

Doubt Barca are in for him, they aren't the richest, have just signed Neymar, and have a pretty poor defence that needs upgrading.

Don't think he would consider going to PSG, Monaco.. Possibly City but even that I'm unsure off, he would get an insane wage at other clubs so no idea why he would want to go there.

It would be us or Madrid I think.

I doubt £60m would do it. North of £70m for Levy to sell to us I'd imagine. Would still be worth it though I reckon. If we could somehow get him and Fab for £100m, it would still be good business IMO. The huge cost would also be offset by possibly about £30m for Rooney and possibly about £10m of other players who may leave.

Bale would also be a marketing dream I reckon, and will become the new face (not the prettiest face admittedly) of United.

They (allegedly) want Nani...

Well that depends. We all remember when he was wanting 'north of' something bloody ridiculous for Modric and in the end got nowhere near it.

£60million does not sound like a good deal. Unless we sod Rooney off for £50m or something.

Really? What do you think a fair price for Bale is? He's the most valuable player in the PL right now.

50 maybe? Torres was the hottest thing at one point and he went for that. If we're really really shrewd, it might be even lower. Who knows, It's not my money. What I know is that if we only get 30m for Rooney from Chelsea, it'll feel like a pretty shitty deal to me, and if we'll have to fork out 60m for Bale, it'll be a shitty deals served as a supersized combo.

Are you serious? unless he only wants to join United, like RVP did, he'll be a nightmare to try and sign. Think of the amount of big/rich clubs that will be in for him.

Holy feck, when I saw the two threads I thought we had signed him

I think he would pick us over any other side.

Give them £40m + Nani or £25m + Rooney and I'll snap your hand off to have him here. We would tear shit up next season with Bale in our team, especially if/when you add a new midfielder into the mix as well.

He may have flown back because he's heard someone (Madrid?) has been offered a deal and he wants a seat at the auction.

Selling Rooney for Cash to Chelsea or the like sends out the wrong signals. Moyes might as well bend over now. We're not a selling club. Why couldn't we sign Bale? If he wants titles, there isn't a better club in England.
