Giggs vs Scholes

I dont know about you bunch of scallywags but I actually prefer Giggs through the middle over Scholes. Dont get me wrong Scholes is a great player but his lack of defensive ability does agitate me during a match and does put an awful lot of pressure on the other CM. With the way things are going in football especially in the CL you cant have just 1 CM carrying the defensive can. In my opinion as we are now, Scholes would be best used when we play 4-3-3 so at least he can have 2 other CMs with some good defensive nous.

Calm down people - everyone is entitled to an opinion. Im not talking about football past Im talking about football in the present and the future. The way football is played is changing - you go back 5-10 years every man and his dog played 4-4-2.... wheras now 4-5-1 and 4-3-3 is all the rage. Just because something worked in the past it doesnt mean it will work in the future - yes we won plenty with Scholes in the middle but in case you havent noticed we havent won the PL for several years - Im not advocating dropping Scholes merely suggesting my own preference thats all.......

Suggest you pay a bit more attention to what Scholes actually does, when he plays
Best midfielder we have by a fecking mile. I mean ffs

i agree with you, but on this forum you're not allowed to say things like that because these guys all live in the past. "how many trophies did we win with giggs on the left, and scholes in the middle"

by the way, about a month before giggs played in the middle, i mentioned it because he is losing pace, and due to the fact that he's a great tackler, but nobody listened.

My god, theres some fools in this place. Scholesy' (when not suffering from certain conditions we dont know about)is one of THE best central midfielders in Europe, comfortable on the ball, great passer, good header, great vision, , excellent shot too, plus a very good finisher....

I hope that clears that up.

I'm not saying Giggs cant do a good job there, but in comparison to Scholes....well, there IS no comparison mate.

It's like someone just randomly decides on a player, then you all claim he's rubbish, regardless of anything.

To claim any of our players is a better central midfielder than Scholes is, in the least, ludicrous...but Giggs? Why?

i still think he's good, but there's no point playing scholes and smith in the midfield as they both will be occupied defensively, covering each others behinds.

if we had a makelele or something similar, i'd play scholes without doubt. otherwise scholes is a shadow of his former self when doing the donkey work

A fit and in form Scholes is STILL one of THE best central midfielders in Europe, if you can't see that then thank feck youre not the manager of the club.

Rio played well when placed in center midfield....Rooney is a good CM option since Saha and Ruud are in form...I'd like to see Keane as our manager for sentimental reasons, anyone else?

But I agree that Giggsy has done well in Scholes absence. That said, I don't think I'd go as far as to say that Giggs is a better option at CM than Scholes or that I'd prefer him there when they're both fit. Giggs is my favorite United player that I've been able to watch personally (Cantona, Best, etc. being before my time), but I'd still like to have Scholesy in the middle whenever possible. I'm enjoying Giggs in there while it lasts though and I suggest that you do too because once Scholes is back I think that will soon end.

put your man utd 2002/03 compilation dvd away and watch the live stuff

if i had a choice of scholes OR giggs to play in the middle with smith or fletcher, it'd be giggs.

if i had a choice of scholes OR giggs to play in the middle with keane or a world class holding midfielder, it'd be scholes.

giggs is better defensively.

giggs doesnt have the disciplin, or the timing to get in the box, or even the vision of picking a pass as scholes, but giggs excels in beating defenders and sheer pace. his freekicks and corners are better then scholes as well

if i had a choice of scholes OR giggs to play in the middle with smith or fletcher, it'd be giggs.

if i had a choice of scholes OR giggs to play in the middle with keane or a world class holding midfielder, it'd be scholes.

giggs is better defensively

scholes best season, for me is when he was playing just off nistelrooy and scored 20 odd goals.

he doesn't do that playing infront of the defence.

Scholes is a great player - Im not remotely debating that. Im saying that AT THE MOMENT I prefer Giggs through the middle - his form has been more consitent recently, he is a great tackler, although not as creative as Scholes still provides good options going forward. IM NOT suggesting dropping Scholes merely if he is played using a 4-3-3 formation - look at Chelski with Lampard, part of the reason why he is so effective is because he knows hes got Makalele and Maniche/Essien help cover his ass defensively.

The fact that we won loads with Scholes as a CM in the past is irrelevant to the future. Back in the early/mid 90s there was still a drinking culture at Man Utd - but we still won trophys.... are you suggesting that we encourage regular piss ups now amongst our players just because of what happened in the past???

I do wish you guys and gals wouldnt get so arsey when you see opinions that you perceive to be controversial or "against the norm" - if I had a penny everytime I saw some leary cnut on here spout shit out of every orifice Id be a wealthy man indeed.......

Ok, so given the current state of our team you'd keep one of the best midfielders in the world on the bench and replace him with a winger just because he tackles better.......like i said, thank feck people with a clue manage the club and not you, now fook off back to championship manager.

Scholes is a better passer of the ball than Giggs, He's a better finisher than Giggs, he is much more comfortable on the ball in close possession than Giggs, in short, He's BETTER....(in central midfield).

Giggs' lack of technique is very apparent when he plays in central midfield. He's great when he get's some space and sets off through the middle of thr park but there's no reason why he can't play left mid and drift inwards and do this from from time to time.

Scholes for me, any day of the week. Before he got blurred vision there was a natural link between the midfield and fowards when he played. There hasn't been with any other combination of midfielders we've been using.

First of all, piss poor analogy. The basis of this discussion isn't 'the good old days', it's who is the better central midfield player, i'd be inclined to say Giggs' form has been MORE erratic than Scholes' over the past 2-3 years. I can assure you when fully fit with no health problems, Scholesy would be one of the first names on the teamsheet, certainly THE first for the central midfield role, still, if you think you know better than Fergie....

i'm trying to explain that, but champ manager boy doesn't understand that the midfield needs the correct blend of players, and scholes with fletcher, smith, richardson and the rest is obviously NOT the right blend ;)

so, at this moment, playing giggs with fletch/smith is better.

not saying scholes should be sold, just saying he's more effective with a solid midfield partner so he can do what he does best, score and create, not tackle and foul

If Scholes wasnt sidelined for the season who do you think Fergie would play in central midfield, Scholes or Giggs?

but we're not debating 'who does fergie prefer in central midfield at this moment'

it's who i prefer. and scholes hasn't done anything for me this season. giggs on the other hand has had some good moments

giggs lack of technique :eek: ffs he is one of our most technicaly gifted players but i dont think his game is suited to the middle of the park.imho he is best left on the wings where he has played all his life.i quite like him on the right when he cuts in,very effective and not used enough by sir alex.lets hope scholesy gets back to full health as i miss him not being in our team
