I think the point is 'they' are almost entirely nobody. She said a thing. Nobody really minded.
 
Whilst we're on 'pretending something is a thing for the sake of a story' (by which I mean, whilst we're in this thread, I guess) I have been led to believe that the 'some academics argue' article cites one.

I also imagine we could find quite a few that would argue choosing the white ones could make us look a bit sus, as I would.
 
Yellow is the default hand colour on most messaging apps. Which is a good thing because nobody's skin is actually that hue. That makes it a bit of a leveller between different people.

So if a white guy went out of his way to deliberately pick a white skin hand to represent him, I think I'd probably be a bit afraid.

White people might have a lot of privelege. But giving me a white power thumbs up won't do anything to address that situation.

I was contemplating which one I was meant to use as that one is probably the closest to my skin colour but am I claiming a multi-racial identity that I have no evidence for if I do?

It’s a tough choice for me too. My maternal grandfather is unknown ethnicity and my skin tone is a good bit darker than the average white Irish man (my mum’s is even more so). Reckon bottom left would be closest.

The article is specifically about (conservative) media trying to manufacture controversy based on a few tweets, and you still swallowed it hook, line and sinker.

Indeed, I think we really need to start clamping down on misinformation. We shouldn't have to waste time in schools anymore teaching kids lies about the earth being round.

But as soon as you tell someone that their theory is BS, it now suddenly becomes an attack on their free speech.
