Articles like this make me think there was a bit of a hatchet job by the media on this subject, turning everyone against these protesters.

Yeah, there definitely was. I remember the framing of Extinction Rebellion before this period and during it. The BBC's criteria seemed to be "Disorderly Hippie", easily dismissed by everyone. Even if you supported it you could dislike the people doing it and that was intentional by the press imo, very obvious lack of balance.
