Interim manager discussion: Who replaces the interim interim manger (Carrick)?

The fact Stones, the mouthpiece of the board, reported that Valverde story, makes me believe he'll get the job indeed and it's not just paper talk. The board must have briefed it to prepare the fans for the news.

Does he speak English? Valverde, I mean.

Stones is debatable.

Maybe Jamie Jackson threw that in there for a laugh, but I think we should go ahead and sign players, if we feel there's players out there who will improve the team/squad. We have the setup to do that and shouldn't rely on the manager for everything like at other clubs.

I agree that we need to change the model, it was more a curiosity as to why consult an interim on any player signed as he wont be here beyond the summer.
 
Assuming we don’t go silly and give it to Carrick..

When do you think we would make the interim appointment? Between Chelsea and Arsenal seems the best time. Then from December 1st we can go with the interim
 
Having Carrick as a back up is a nice luxury, like having Heaton as the third string goalkeeper. Even if you find out that your interim manager is a stringent anti-vaxxer who caught COVID, you’ll be fine to cruise for a few weeks.
 
What I find hilarious is that many are turning up their noses at candidates for the interim role, and it seems they won't be happy unless we bring in a interim on the level of Klopp or Guardiola.

There's no reason not to involve him really, is there? He obviously shouldn't have a heavy hand in recruitment but if we've appointed him (albeit temporarily) to provide a given amount of football expertise then you might as well have him at the table. Would be weird to have a guy who won two La Liga titles at Barca hanging around the club and not ask him for his opinion on what needs doing and who would be a good fit.

Agreed. I would prefer we not take the kick the can down the road approach but if it is to be an interim appointment he certainly fits the profile of an established veteran coach with the trophies on the shelf that should command respect from the players. The upside is that this does increase the likelihood of my preferred candidate, ETH, getting the job.

Like @sullydnl , I also feel it would be beneficial to for us to consult someone like Valverde on the way forward mate.
 
Is the interim going to get to bring at least one of his staff with him? Or are we sticking the poor guy with Ole’s coaching staff?

The problem with just any interim is that they may become permanent in the board eyes if they will stabilize the situation (which any half decent coach will do with this group). If it’s interim similar to Rangnick who would be here clearly just for a short gig then that’s fine.
 
What kind of manager is valverde? Is he an attack minded manager? He won some pretty high scoring games for Barca, 6-1 against Sevilla, 5-1 against Madrid and 4-2 against spurs are 3 that I remember. The only thing I don’t like about interim managers are if we make the same mistake and appoint him permanently if he wins a trophy or goes on a good run. I’d be happy if we got him as interim but then agreed a deal with one of our first choices to take over at end of the season… poch/ten Haag.

I'm all for having actual football men involved in these choices, but it would mean we'd have to get a manager in next summer who would want the same profile of player as Valverde, now that type of managerial continuity is what I'd love to see us aim for but my faith in this board implementing that kind of structure is minimal at best.

He's flexible and I think that's what we need now. I suspect he'll take the conservative approach but hopefully by the end of the season most of our players will have grasped the positional and zonal requirements at the very least, which would provide a platform for whomever the club decide to appoint.

That's a good point. I totally missed that Valverde was available and I could see him bring a bit of experience to the likes of Murtough. Particularly when you look at an extremely structured club like Athletic Bilbao, they are not the biggest club around but they know exactly what they are doing.
 
As unplanned, desperate interim appointments go I don't think you can really complain much about a guy who won two La Ligas and got to UEFA Cup finals and CL semi-finals. It's a good profile of manager to get for that limited, emergency role.
 
Wouldn't surprise me if we give it to Valverde and then wait for Poch to be sacked because the second they go out of the CL he's toast. Save ourselves compensation is the name of the game in Glazer HQ.
 
I have already prepared myself with the thought that it will be a scrappy win against Chelsea. He will be the interim until the end of the season.

Absolutely mate. His experience working within a well structured setup at Bilbao and his experience at the highest level, has the potential to be a good short term option and also has the potential to provide valuable input to those working on the football side.

Possibly but honestly the money we've spend, the wages we pay...the Glazer's manage this club with all the intuition of a horse looking at a cabbage but the fact is we spend money like we've ran out of toilet paper people STILL hark back to this idea we're tight. I don't get it.

It's genuinely as if people see how much money we pour down the drain and think 'Nope, still skint. Drasdo said so decade ago'

I think the Jackson article is a mistake where he said Valverde is sounding out players, he probably meant he’s putting together a staff for a potential hire.
 
Stone has to be one of the most reputable voices around, if it's Valverde then so be it. No idea how his management is as long as there's organisation to this side it's a start. Observing the midfield this evening shows why the team struggled with Ole and the staff as the leaders. Too many inexperienced people around the club leading the team. Carrick should in no wise be given the interim role.
 
Valverde is a defensive manager. Yes, he used the basic principles of the positional play at Barcelona but his mindset for the games is reactionary..also the high pressing was non existent during his time there..there was a funny moment in a CL clash with Inter Milano at the Nou Camp when Conte's men pressed the hell out of Barca's backline and Valverde just stood there clueless what to do...

I don't want an interim. I want Poch if Ten Hag doesn't want to leave his comfort zone for us.

Seriously, how are you people so happy to write off the season in November?
 
Know many won't agree but at least appointing Valverde suggests they still haven't fully decided between Pochettino & Ten Hag for the summer
 
I dont know about Valverde. Didnt Barca get rid of him because he wasnt playing attractive football.

I thought it was more of a case of Messi didn't like him, so he sacked him.
 
There's only two options here, imo. If the plan is to stumble until the end of the season - get Ten Hag, possibly Overmars to replace Murtough. If Poch is available right now, we should go for him instead. If Poch is still our aim after the end of the season, that will be very uninspiring.

I've no doubt his info is correct that Valverde has been spoken to for interim role but at the same time you have to be wary of the official line from the club, they'll release the narrative that suits them. They may be trying to cover themselves from looking bad if they fail to land Poch, and may be trying to suggest to Poch/PSG that we have alternatives options if they don't make it easy for us.

If we'd given up on Poch coming in we'd know it already, it's clear that's still the plan.

To be fair I bet a lot of people would prefer Valverde until summer and then Ten Hag, over Poch coming in immediately.

Seriously I am not and have repeatedly said I want us to get a permanent manager in, I hate wasting so much time on caretakers and interim appointments but if the board are dead set then Valverde makes more sense than letting an unqualified club legend dick around for a few more months. You say you want Poch if we cannot get ETH but we don't even know if that is possible, I get that he isn't going to throw his hat into the ring during a press conference but his comments today were pretty emphatic about loving life at PSG and they are of course more than wealthy enough to tell us to feck off regardless of how much compensation we offer. I would rather we look at other permanent candidates if Poch and ETH are not available, taking a punt on someone like Potter would be preferable to an interim but we know our board are way too risk averse for something like that.
