Embarrassment is not an emotion that Jose Mourinho has had to particularly concern himself with before this season.
But the Chelsea manager is well aware that in a campaign in which humiliation has followed humiliation on almost a weekly basis, there would be no greater personal embarrassment than suffering relegation to the Europa League.
Chelsea were Europa League champions when Mourinho returned to the club in 2013 and it took a matter of weeks for the Portuguese to dismiss the achievement and the efforts of former interim manager Rafa Benitez.
Defeat to Porto at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night, however, would almost certainly see Mourinho contemplating Chelsea playing in the competition he insisted he would not want to win and claimed was “not good” for the club and players.
Mourinho insists Roman Abramovich would tolerate another serious blow, but Chelsea’s owner first sacked Andre Villas-Boas when the club’s participation in the Champions League was threatened and then dismissed Roberto Di Matteo when relegation to the Europa League was all-but sealed.
Abramovich clearly subscribes to the view Mourinho gave of the Europa League, when he said: “I don't want to win the Europa League. It would be a big disappointment for me. I don't want my players to feel the Europa League is our competition.”
In August this year, Mourinho repeated that view, adding: “When I returned, I felt the experience of Chelsea playing Europa League was not good.
“The Europa League is a different competition (to the Champions League), the Europa League is a different level of competition for a different level of player and a different level of club. It is not good for a big club to go there and win it.”

So either your manager thinks Chelsea is a bigger club than United or he's just a lying hypocrite.
