James Milner is top 4 material.

I was desperately trying to think of what Milner reminded me of, and it came to me.

He's like one of those firefighters who deliberately start fires just so they can be the hero and save the burning children inside. That's why he loses the ball every time he has it - just so he can go and win the ball back with an unnecessarily excessive slide-tackle, and subsequently be praised for his defensive grit and stability.

Huh? There are firemen who start fires?

This is kinda why England suck. This is a guy who's been a player since he was what? 16/17? How much has he improved? How much has he developed? What's his best position? Is he a winger? He's got no pace. He don't assist much. He's a hard worker but limited yet cost over 20million...

He's a bit meh. When your team do well, he does ok but I don't think he's anything special at all.

He is a 'grafter' - all effort and very little in the way of skill.

That's about the most confusing thing of them all. Who comes up with those values for English players?

Henderson 20 mio., Carroll 35 mio., Downing 20 mio., Milner and Barry around 20 mio. this is a complete joke non of these players is even remotely worth that much money. The prices that clubs have to pay for players just because they are English is mind boggling.

You could easily add the 16M paid for Phil Jones to that, too, to be fair. In which other country does an unproven 18-year old with one full season of top flight experience under his belt fetch such a price?

To be fair 3 of those were signed by a mentally unstable old drunk, whilst the other two were signed by a club who have more money than god so.......

To be fair the homegrown AND the 90 minute rule is dictating strategies that are not, what you would call, erm, ideal.

Milner was quite impressive for villa in CM, the year before city bought him.

Moving to city has effectively ruined his career IMO, he needs to move ASAP.

Sergio Ramos was bought for €27m after playing a similar number of games (just 4 more). Cassano cost €30m at the age of 19.

Well, the point is that you can make a comprehensive list of English clubs overpaying for English players, using examples only from the last few years. In most other countries this (overpaying for domestic players not least because of their nationality) doesn't happen nearly as often.

Cassano, heh. It's quite weird that even now, after a decade of constant reminders that he's an insufferable idiot, many still think that he might somehow gain some intelligence and actually become a top class footballer.
