Jonny Evans | 2011/12 Performances

Some good games and some confidence and he plays really well. It's recovering from mistakes and poor form that he seems to struggle with.

Hopefully he kicks on and gets a good run to compensate.

He's performed absolutely brilliantly against all sorts of players and top class teams so far in his career. Underrated defender who would probably be held in a lot higher esteem if he was English and not Irish (although that's not certain given hype over Terry/Jones as opposed to Rio/Smalling). Really, really good tonight.

Edit: Shat it when he went down injured after the goal. :nervous:

Yeah he's been doing a lot of that to be fair, we need some relief at CB.

His contract expires in 2014, I reckon we should hear something about his new contract. He deserves it for his performances.

Heard he had a monster game.

Still can't believe most opposition fans don't rate him at all, most of them still think he's the weak point in our defence when he'll easily walk into the starting line up of any team in the world.

"Any team in the World" is perhaps a little bit ambitious but he is certainly becoming a very valuable player for us.

To the point where, when all CBs are fit, I would still opt to have him as the mainstay.

Would walk into the vast majority of teams, no doubt. Would easily get into the Arsenal, Chelsea and City teams for example and he's a better defender than Ramos in my opinion so the Madrid team wouldn't be beyond him either. It's only with Barcelona off the top of my head out of the teams I've watched regularly over the last year with Puyol and Pique that there would be any doubt. Not many teams actually have two really top class centre backs at the moment.

At the moment, he would be Barcelona's best defensive player by miles too.

I think his few months of awful form lingers in many peoples heads, generally the bad always outways the good, just like DDG.

Everybody remembers the mistakes a defender makes rather than the good points.

I doubt he'd get into Bayern's team at the moment. Badstuber, Boateng, Dante are all very good defenders, and all with room for improvement. Agree with Evans has really progressed into a solid defender. If he didn't have that soft Irish lilt to his voice and instead had a low gruff voice, other fans would rate him much more highly I reckon. He just comes across as a bit of a softy in interviews, and he's not a reknowned tough tackling defender either.

Everytime I see a defender thread getting, I get a chill through my spine... It's an automatic "Shit, who got injuried this time?"

But this was a very pleasant surprise seeing Evans doing brilliantly.

He is better defender than those 3.

That's more a testament to the strength we have in depth at centre back, to be fair. Our centre backs are considerably better than Barcelona's - we have that over them at least.

I think Rio has proven that you dont need to be gravel voiced hard tackler to excel at defending

Nevermind Barca, he wouldn't be in our starting line-up if we had everyone fit.

I'm a big Evans fan but I'd say you're probably right. Rio and Vidic are still top dogs for now when fit

"when fit" which unfortunately is less and less

I'm sorry but Dante is in no way better than Jonny Evans. Badstuber also has a reputation of being error-prone.

Never seen it with Badstuber, maybe he just plays shit when I watch him.

Same. Granted I've seen him play no more than 15 times, but he's always struck me as potentially 10 seconds away from a disaster.

He is not a better defender than Badstuber.

It's a tough choice, but IMO, he is. I am one of those who thinks badstuber is quite good defender, but Evans has done it in premiership. I know it's a cliché, but if there is one thing that is much better in premiership then in bundesliga, it's the defending. Defending in bundesliga is pretty much awfull.

I admit - after the City red card last year I overreacted and said some things about Evans that was out of line.

He has shut me up since then big time. Really, really becoming mature.

His confidence on the ball in great. Much, much better than Jagielka and Lescott with the ball already.

Having a CB that can actually pass and move the ball forward is huge in today's game.

mmm, guess you didn't see Badstuber's shambolic performance against Sweden yesterday.

Yeah cause one poor game defines how good a defender is.

Rio is the the worst defender in the PL so, considering his game against Spurs.

You're using the game against Sweden as a counter-argument to me saying Badstuber is a better player than Evans, seems clear enough.
