José Mourinho Press Conference - 9th August 09:30 BST | Embargoed quotes in OP - on Martial, Pogba

No mention of Martial? Is he even back training?

its in the OP embargoed section:

--- Embargoed quotes ---

Martial's Munich absence

He didn't have a pre-season. He had three days, he didn't have nine days. No training, no football, absolutely nothing. So Tony is in the group of players that didn't have a pre-season. You tried to make a case on it. There is no case on it. For nine days he didn't train, so it's like to start again. You have to go back. You have to start with the other players.

Regarding the embargoed quotes on Martial and Pogba and the media, I really sympathise with the manager and in this instance, Mourinho, for the very fact that he always has to repeat the very same fact that we still have squad harmony and that the media is always full of shit, and yet our supporters don't seem to buy it. This certainly isn't the first time he has mentioned all these in the pressers. But one negative tweet from a bullshit journo, and everyone laps it up. Baffling.

So the embargoed quotes come out and Jose vehemently denies there's any right between himself and the players. Great news right?

We've barely managed a page in, what, 14 hours?

They would rather believe third party rumors than Jose or the players. It's amazing.

Whilst I tend to agree that a lot of his mind games go straight over people's heads, doesn't that mean they may also go over a lot of the players head, hence why he doesn't get the reaction he was expecting?

The difference is that Jose talks to these guys every day. The club and Jose just seem to let the shite get spewed about us these days without responding, but from what players have said it sounds like it's a completely different picture behind the scenes. Hell, Like Shaw even seemed positive about his relationship with Jose and he's apparently been his No1 target for criticism since he arrived.

Good comments about Pogba but I’m struggling to see what is good about the Martial stuff?

He had a go at the media saying they tried to make a big deal about things with Martial but there isn't one.

'you tried to make a case on it, there is no case on it'

He also made a point about having no issues with his players etc. I took it pretty positively.

Obviously I agree there's every reason to be skeptical about what the papers say, but the idea that what players and the manager say in interviews is trustworthy strikes me as quite naive.

Surely it must be obvious that there are very strong incentives for players not to go public with any complaints or concerns they might have about the manager, their team mates, the squad strength etc.

As for Mourinho, he is a proponent of the notion that the press conferences etc. are an extension of the match and ought to be used to try to gain an advantage over the opponent. The assumption that he would try to pair this belief with unflinching honesty seems a bit ridiculous to me.

Frankly, players and managers giving open and honest accounts of their feelings in interviews is neither realistic nor desirable.

Rooney was very honest in his statement about the club, got slaughtered for it.
Jose has appeared very open in his pressers, his comments on Martial, Shaw, Pogba, Smalling, Jones and a few others have been very direct and not hidden his observations on them. If he questions the work ethic of his players, then he's hardly being secretive.

So you're saying Jose just has to put up with made up crap about him having issues with half the squad? Rather than addressing it with the exact same people who'd have us all believe they have an inside line of the dynamics of the first team squad?

Some of the conclusions you've drawn from what I've said seem almost completely unrelated to my point, which is just that it is silly to suggest that it is somehow disloyal to take Mourinho's or the players' comments with a pinch of salt.

Interviews, especially with modern, media - trained players are not glimpses into their souls. It doesn't take much imagination to guess why a player might keep quiet about their reservations rather than saying "To be honest, I'm not sure that many of my team mates are up to the task, everyone seems a bit hacked off, the manager is in a foul mood and is poisoning the atmosphere, and if I was a betting man I'd say it's no more less than evens that he'll be in charge this time next year ", even if that was what they thought (which I'm not suggesting they do). If you believed player interviews almost all players are happy at their club agonist all of the time

Like you point out there are situations like with Rooney when players put their heads above the parapet but generally only if they are in a position of strength in relation to the manager or the club, or are angling for a move.

What does it matter especially if everything is rosy between him and all the players he apparantly has issues with? Why address it? It wouldnt be the most intelligent way to dispute lies.

Good comments about Pogba but I’m struggling to see what is good about the Martial stuff?

He's saying there's no drama with it but he only had 3 days of pre season training so he missed quite a lot of pre season so therefore he's with the lads who returned on Monday for preseason. Can't see anything wrong with what he said.
