@boo posted this in a conversation thread... it deserves more viewings.

Mata gliding on one foot:

That actually looks like the type of animation glitch you get in PES or FIFA.

He is asking for photos with number 8 on them for the contest. Some funny submissions in his blog comments. Check it out.

Most are pretty shit. Someone posted a pic of a hand simply holding the eight of diamonds, clubs, spades and hearts. Great imagination.

Let's be real here. I get the Mata love in but the way people talk about this sort of stuff it's like they've never played a sport in their lives.

He is lunging for the ball. He is basically jumping forwards. He isn't gliding as gliding indicates that his foot is bearing his weight. His trail leg is simply dragging along. It looks cool and all, but let's not make it sound like he walked on water. His lagging leg is just dragging.
 feck's sake. Yeah, everyone thought he was balancing on the tip of his toe while using it as some kind of rudder.

Rooney needs to be played up top on his own to allow this genius to do what he does best.

With Rooney playing in a deeper role, it causes Mata to almost be ignored, he is having to move all over the pitch to get the ball. He needs to be the go to player when we're on the attack. When Rooney is in the hole, Mata is pushed elsewhere. It's strange because I actually think it is obvious that Rooney is not a 'number 10', especially in comparison to Mata.

Drop Rooney, or drop RVP to allow Rooney the ST position. Mata needs to be the focal point of our build up play.

Mata has been anything but ignored. Pretty sure he's had more touches of the ball/passes than Rooney since he has been here. You mention he's moving all over the pitch, isn't that a good thing considering people don't want him restricted to the wing?

He's had the touches yes, but he is coming deep to get the ball. He needs to be picking the ball up in the space between midfield and attack.

His movement in the hole is better than Rooney's. I've just made the point elsewhere on this forum, Rooney playing in the hole restricts Mata's abilities. Rooney needs to be played as the main striker or not at all. Mata needs to be played in the position that is best suited to him. Just because he can play on the wing, doesn't mean he should. His best position IMO is the number 10 role, a player of his quality needs to be given that role.

That's pretty much what several posters were insinuating actually.

Glad we agree.

Very impressed at how quickly he has assimilated into the team. It looks like he has been playing here for years. Once he gets a better understanding of Rooney and RVP im sure the goals/assists will start pouring in.

Started off a little bit slowly but really grew into it, and was running the game with some great passing too. So much potential with him at the heart of things.

He was involved a lot more there this evening than he has been in other games or since he came I thought. It's very easy forget too that he still needs time to get into the swing of things here but going by the way he was floating around the pitch there now it's certainly looking like he's heading in the right direction.

His best game for us in my opinion, involved in a lot of promising play and was one of the main reasons for us keeping the ball as well we did.

We need to get him involved as much as possible. He didn't do much in first half but a lot of times he was available and wasn't getting the ball.

Very good second half.

How to play both him and Rooney centrally is a question that needs to be answered. But it's a good problem to have. Looked so good in the second half, absolutely the quality of player we need introduced to the team. Thanks Chelsea!

He took a while to get going today but when he did, he was involved in everything. Especially late in the game I thought he was very impressive. Still finding his role in the team which is understandable, but everything he does oozes class.

For a player that was signed in a winter rush he already developing a lot into this team. Excellent movement and he's the kind of player that feels a tempo of Premier League matches.

I have to say - big thanks to Moyesy for talking sense and reason into Mourinho's head and acquiring this talent.

Think there's lots more to come from him. I missed the first half but there was an opportunity to shoot as he had a bit of space late on but tried the pass. Great to have him here though and can't wait to see how he develops

If you check the how to use Mata effectively thread, I suggested the best way would be if Mata occupies a free rcm role, while Rooney/Van Persie take up a false 9/striker role. We saw glimpse of how effective Mata can be today when given a license to roam free centrally and I believe sacrificing or shunning out wide one of Rooney or Van Persie, will be for the betterment of our football.

Nevertheless, good performance by him today. Can not wait to see how much more productive he can be for United once he gains chemistry with the team

This was an excellent signing, no doubt about it. Could be an absolute pivotal figure like he was for Chelsea if used properly. He does not shy away from the key moments, and he showed some beautiful link ups with the other 3 up front.

"Shunt" Rooney or RVP out wide and you'll have people going mental on here!
