Also, I'm pretty sure Lovren is holding him. I'm pretty sure holding in the box is a penalty, even if the player being held is offside. So if you really want to get technical about it, a pen should have been called long before van Dijk booted Lamela.

Of course, calling a pen for that would have been dumb, just like your (and others) whinging about Lamela being an inch offside.

Seeing as Lamela's arm can't be offside then if his knee is offside then it's so marginal that the fact that the line isn't drawn straight probably means he is onside.
 
That "offside" falls under the benefit of doubt to the attacker unwritten rule.

It's centimetres and there is a Liverpool player directly blocking the linesman's line of sight.

Don't agree. So what you are effectively saying is that if there is ANY contact its a penalty?! Like I said earlier, you would have got laughed off the park yesteryear. Such a shame that most others agree with your point of view. Anyway, I won't change my opinion as I suspect you won't change yours. If you, and others, can watch stuff like that and not feel any sense of disgust, then I fear that the game has now become nothing more than a stage for the benefit of the third rate actors to inflict their "craft" on the gullible public. Here's a question...can you imagine players of the calibre of Duncan Edwards, Bobby Charlton, George Best, Nobby Stiles and others of that ilk acting like that? My last word on the subject.

Apart from when Son was clear through, Van Dijk played him on. Karius made a good save. Alli also had a good chance.

The ebb and flow of the game had swung massively in Spurs favour and it felt only a matter of time before they scored.

I am actually enjoying this meltdown, everyone arguing over offsides and penalties. It's fun, especially when it happened to Liverpool.

I don't, as it happens, but to argue about it to the extent you all are - and expect officials to notice somebody being offside by mere inches during a frantic phase of play - is completely absurd.

The only poor decision in this whole mess was the one by your (very) expensive centre-back to boot Lamela two feet into the air. Lamela himself, Moss, his officials etc. are all blameless as far as I'm concerned in the context of everything we've seen.

It’s not the referees fault you haven’t won the league in 30 years. Maybe they should sign better players and get a better manager.

I've only posted a couple times about it - just calling what my eyes are telling me.

Not really apportioning blame to Moss or the linesman - it was borderline, but just another example of how technology could be effective.
 
From a neutral perspective, both penalties are a little dubious. In the first one, the referee didn’t see whether Lovren touched the ball, as in his conversation with the linesman. The benefit of the doubt should have gone to Liverpool in my view, as it was clear Kane was standing in an offside position. I am also not convinced the linesman interpreted the offside rule correctly here.

The 2nd one was clearly contact, but Lamela clearly jumps between VVD, and was clearly looking for it. Could have gone either way, but I don’t like seeing soft penalties in dying minutes of the game, as more often than not, it is usually a desperate play by the attacker. Referees should be wiser to these. Football games are very close, and really shouldn’t be decided on such marginal decisions in the dying seconds of a games.

You surely can't genuinely believe this?

He's what, 6 yards out from goal? He's quite clearly shielding the ball from van Dijk while trying to turn himself toward the goal. If van Dijk doesn't boot him in the back of the leg, Lamela has a decent view of goal, and is in a great position to either fire a shot away or drill it across the 6 yard box. Absolute nonsense to claim he's just jumped into the contact, as if the ball's not sat right in front of him.
 
So, is he gonna get charged or what? because other managers have said a lot less and had the book thrown at them. Absolutely disgraceful double standards if the FA let this slide.

Mark Clattenburg knows what he's talking about? Most cases like that, they simply don't have a still frame that shows whether offside or not with 100% accuracy. Hence the 10 cm margin of error

I'm not sure of the timeframes usually on the bans but i thought Jose got his last one the next day.

This couldn't be more clear cut so i don't know what the hold up is

I was half joking about 'if this was Mou' but was certain he'd be slapped with a heavy fine.

Actually, it doesn't - in such a case the penalty kick has to be retaken regardless of whether the goal's scored or not.

Once the referee has signalled for a penalty kick to be taken, the kick must be taken. If, before the ball is in play, one of the following occurs:

  • the player taking the penalty kick or a team-mate offends:

Yeah, me too. It is genuinely unbelievable that the FA would display open favouritism towards one manager, but that really seems to be the case.
