How do they make the radical shift though? What does Starmer gain by saying ‘we’ll invest in this, we’ll spend on that, we’ll do this this and this too’ when the reality is they can’t.
They can’t borrow as Truss showed what happens there, and the economy is tanked, so what can he do other than say the reality of the situation we find ourselves in?
The country is fecked and it’ll take decades to recover. Not exactly a great for a poster, but it’s the truth.
So why vote Labour over Tory at the next election then?
The idea that they can’t spend is nonsense. As if the economics of austerity hasn’t been thoroughly debunked by the first time we tried it… much of the current problems we have now are because of that economic policy and we won’t solve them by doing more of the same.
It wasn’t the borrowing itself that did for Truss, it was what she was borrowing for. Huge unfunded tax cuts for the rich… for what? Some vague notion that it would lead to economic growth without the evidence to back it up.
There’s nothing to stop a Labour Government increasing taxes on the rich, if they had any sense.

Because Labour will actually try to work the way out of it. The Tories will simply commit more cases of social murder to line the pockets of their friends and donors.

Tbh I don’t disagree with your assessment, the economy does look really really grim but the party(And really all left forces in Europe)are going to have to come up with something if they are to survive.
The only potential positives if they don’t, is that so far it’s looking like the younger generations rejecting the right, for now at least.
Will they? What are they campaigning on that will get us out of it? Do we vote for them becuase we belive they are lying when they are publically agreeing with pretty much everything the Tories are doing?

Tarry and Streeting have now both committed 'sackable offences' in order to get out from under... whose next indeed?
Plenty to slate Starmer with. And i have my reservations about the Guardian after its contribution to the previous Labour leadership. But this policy seems to make sense.

The thing is, Labour under Starmer could have backtracked on all the leadership pledges and gone to the right of Corbyn and still have grounded the offer to the public in centre-left social democratic principles. That's not meant as a criticism of Corbyn by the way. Labour are galloping to the centre-right at a time when the public appear to be more amenable to social democracy than they have in a decade or more.
By the way did you see Margaret Hodge at the weekend accuse Corbyn of both being a racist and caring too much about foreigners instead of British people? Amazing.

Agree with you, Labour could have offered a very basic centre left platform but the party is sounding closer to the 2010 tories or May Tories of 2017 then even when the party was lead by Ed Miliband(I mean Blair didn't sound this right wing in the 90's).
While the Corbyn era did radicalise people to more social democratic idea and even socialist ones, I do think it also radicalised both the centre and right of Labour politics.
It tested just how far some were willingly to go into order to stop basic reforms, along with general condition of the world economy get worse. I think we are seeing a more right wing version of liberal politics(Tbh the same is happening in the US, where Biden isn’t that different in policy terms to Trump).
I dunno, I think you have to ask what the best way is to help people right now, given the cost of living crisis is here today. Do you scrap the imperfect system we have now and spend 4 years coming up with something amazing, or keep it try to make it work better? I can see why they might decide to keep it.
Fair enough. Regardless, I don't think he will be winning my vote anyway after the previous lies to gain leadership.
But I have witnessed the cruelty of the "fit for work" scheme and it is brutal. So it is something I can say would be better than the Tories. The real problem is Starmer and his cronies can't be trusted to stick to their word.
The cost of living crisis is more of reason to bring in a new system. Britian was bombed to shit and Labour answer was the NHS.
Also a lot of people have no idea at just how awful and dehumanising the current system is. I’ve been on universal credit before and I’ve seen people in tears and shaking with anxiety as they wait for their interview. I’ve known someone who took a knife to their hands and cut them up as they were worried about coming across as not “ill” enough and getting their money stopped, I’ve known disabled people who can’t even spell their own name and need 24 hour care get called up for a work assessment, etc etc.
There’s no good left wing excuse for keeping the current system. We need a new social safety net which gives people who are too sick to work, money and services which helps them.

This could have implications for Labour's ability to mount an effective general election campaign, as some in the party believe it could face a multimillion-pound legal bill.
The three have been blamed by Labour, along with two other Corbyn supporters, of leaking a controversial internal party document, which included private emails and messages.
But the information commissioner has told the BBC it has found "insufficient evidence" that any individual had unlawfully obtained or disclosed personal data.
Separately, Labour is taking the five Corbyn supporters to the High Court for conspiring to put the document into the public domain.
But some in the party are concerned that the commissioner's decision could make the case less likely to succeed.
If it fails, lawyers for the Corbyn supporters say they will seek to recover their costs.
The party has said it is confident of the case it is making to the court.
But the stakes are high.
The BBC understands the estimated combined legal costs of the five Corbyn supporters, added to Labour's costs, range from more than £3m to around £4m.
