La Liga 2013-2014

What a miss by el Pulga!!!! All that hard work and he missed. It is no exaggeration to say that with all the times his shots have been saved or they have hit the post/crossbar, he would have over 400+ goals in 380+ games such is his accuracy and how he makes the goalkeeper work.

Good goal and a brilliant take down for the assist. Barcelona deserved that, because for all of their possession, their passing has been woeful tonight. It is as if they have decided that 3-0 is enough and decided to take their foot off the gas. They should treat Sociedad with a little bit more of respect.

He has no reason to be happy, he was terrible tonight. Extremely sloppy passing and dribbling, even his control was wayward on too many occasions.

Agree, but I think he is unhappy with being subbed off rather than with his performance.

His last couple of performances have been below par to be honest. When Messi is brilliant, no-one can touch him, when he is off-form, he is terrible and when he is a class player, it shows up.

Yeah, his performances lately are far from his best.

The thing is, even when he's underwhelming he still has flashes where he can make an impact (same as Cristiano, Rooney and other top players), but this time he was actually bad IMO, I don't think I've ever seen him miscontrol and misplace so many balls. He still had a goal and an assist and two chances he created completely by himself, but he was extremely sloppy overall when he usually isn't.

Next two games tonight, Atléti-Osasuna should be a relatively easy win for Simeone's men (although a 0-0 isn't out of the question either). Málaga-Almería could be a goalfest.

Leo Baptistão with his first start I believe, ahead of Villa, next to Diego Costa.

I don't know what game you saw, but Messi was great. First game in a while he start doing his dribbling runs from deep in a consistent way.

The only thing that let him down was his finishing of course. He should have scored 2 more goals at least. But overall, great game from Messi. 1 goal + 1 assist as well.

Diego Costa with his 6th goal of the season! 1-0 Atléti.

@George Owen: can't agree at all, his all-round game was very poor tonight IMO, at a certain point in the 2nd half he lost possession three times within one minute. Almost every difficult forward pass was intercepted and he was dispossessed far too easily at times.

And Diego Costa with his 2nd, what a header! Puts him level with Messi as top scorer in the league, I believe. (Koke with another assist as well)

Spanish press are reporting that Barcelona want Koke for next year, interestingly they're describing him as Xavi's heir.

2-1 at HT

The worst Performance by Messi is better than brilliant performaces of Rooney and Cr97

By Messi's standards that was definitely subpar.. Difficult to compare it with other players though, because we've lost a bit of objectivity in that regard after 4 years of Ballon d'Or worthy performances.. (I mean forget it's Messi for a moment, 1 goal, 1 assist isn't bad even by the standards of a player like Rooney).

Having said that, Messi screwed up big time when he missed that chance. What a goal that would have been!

Anyway, here is what Messi said after AS reported that he made a gesture in response to his substitution..

"I didn't mean to make any gesture when I came off. I will not accept that certain media tell lies."

"Nobody likes to be replaced, but we must accept it because it is the best for our team. What I will not accept is that certain media tell lies about any situation that happens around me."

Diego Costa again. He'll score 15+ goals this season - the guy is maturing into a very good goal scorer. Re Messi subpar: I agree and it's not an uncommon theme this season. He's been subpar in every game he's played this season, apart from the Valencia game - and arguably, the game before yesterday's - where he was excellent. He doesn't look 100%, but at the same time Barcelona are in need of a #9. Also, I'm surprised by Iniesta's poor form - granted he is playing higher up, but it's weird seeing not seeing him in 'beast mode'.

Apparently a very even first half with Diego Lopez being Madrid's best player and I'm told Ramos should be off for a second yellow card.

Don't see where Ramos should have been off for a second yellow myself, it was just drab in the first half, Elche had a couple decent chances though, Madrid deserve to be leading since HT though, absolutely battered Elche for the first 10mins of the half.
