lady thatcher

It is ironic to see the outcry over the G20 protests that occur today when under the Snatch, police brutality towards normal working people was par for the course (or indeed force) as was locking up any Irish people you didn't like the look of and as for the SPG - well lets not get started on that.

.

There are many Irish people that I dont like.......as well as a representative sample of people from all nations.
For the record.....the miscarriages of justice to which you are probably referring (Birmingham 6, Guildford 4, Maguire 7, Indianapolis 500) all too k place BEFORE Thatcher came to power.

She was the Fergie of her day, knocking Heath, Callaghan, Galtieri, Scargill, Foot, Kinnock and Livingstone off their perches. At the time she was highly popular but is not viewed so kindly nowadays - a blue rinse Reagan.

To quote Sir Alex himself when it was put to him that he shared some personality traits with Maggie- "Never compare me to that woman".

You know feck-all about Fergie, mate, I'd love to see you tell him that.

im 31...

my dad used to be a miner and I saw thatcher decimate the area I grew up in... it has never recovered!

The economics of British coal destroyed the mining industry, not Thatcher.

You castigate Thatcher for how she went after the mining unions, but you forget this is a fight they wanted and chose to have.

I am 40, so I remember this stuff too.

no its more the leaving people to rot after that pissed me off

Fergie is Labour so no love lost there. But he's personally done well out of Thatcher's reforms to football.

went to war to win an election...

sank the belgrano when it was in international waters and heading away from the conflict...

as bad as blair imo...

I don't believe she went to war to win an election. She responded to an invasion - a massively different case.

Belgrano - I dunno. We were at war, we were badly equipped, you fight to win and it's not as if it was on a freaking peacekeeping mission.

Indeed. She was a paragon of all that is wrong with society and her get out clause was that no such thing existed. She ruined any remnant of a sense of community by turning greed and personal "property" into a seemingly endless gravy train. We are reaping the "benefits" of it now.
She is and was a total f*cking bitch of a narrow minded grocer's daughter with the imagination of a muffin.
I am 45.

ff how long can you blame Thatcher for umpteen years of enlightened Labour

tony blair is a lying snake oil salesman.
how dare you compare lady thatcher to him?
she was a marvellous woman - and i had the absolute pleasure of meeting her once at the tory winter ball.

Thatcher supported Apartheid.

I'm no fan but personally I think anyone posting in this thread should qualify what they're saying by indicating how old they are.

Just because someone is not old enough to remember her as Prime Minister, it doesn't mean they can't have an opinion on her.

and you didnt chin her...

talk about wasted oppertunity...

and i know blair was friends with that cock bush... but pinochet hardly a shining beacon of all thats right with the world was he?

blair and thatcher were more similar than a lot of either conservative or labour supporters will admit...

possibly the biggest difference was that maggie probably had a bigger set of balls on her

well we obviously have different taste in prime ministers , but i thought she was marvellous and certainly had more backbone than most people.

as for bliar being bush's friend - more like poodle!

If I ever happen to be near her grave I hope I have a bad case of diarrhoea that day and a full bladder.

Make sure you're careful to avoid the pile that I've left first.

For reference I'm 42 and remember how she very kindly increased my mortgage to 17% interest.

No she didn't. Scargill was a joke, in the press and the majority of the public's eyes. She could pulled the rug out from under him with finesse and nerves - with carrot and stick. With a combination of firmness and fairness - with her supposedly amazing intellect. She did none of these things because she needed to portray herself as the politician with the biggest cojones in order to cement her power base within the party - in order to allay voters' potential fears at the idea of a woman being a weaker leader than a man. This was the ultimate selfishness - putting her political gain above the long-term needs of the country. Nobody would argue that Scargill's influence had to be addressed; I would argue vehemently that her way cost us very, very dearly and it was a price that we did not need to pay.

just a thought - if it was so easy to handle Scargill et all why for 5 years before could not those great beacons of intellect Messrs Wilson and Callaghan manage it :D

I don't believe she went to war to win an election. She responded to an invasion - a massively different case.

She was massively behind in the polls at the time of the war.
She had withdrawn the Falklands patrols after pressure from the UN even though the Argies were continually warning they were going to invade.

Technically the Falklands war saved her political neck.

now let me see if I understand your thinking

Maggie was behind in the polls
The Argies were threatening invasion
Maggie thought - ah I have a great idea
I´ll withdraw the Falklands patrols
then the Argies will invade
then we go to WAR
Then we win
then I win an election

feckin wicked that

No, not quite.

The argie Junta were spouting that they were going to reclaim the Falklands for themselves.
Even under this the UN told the UK to remove the patrols from the Falklands as they were provocative.
If Maggie had told the UN to bollocks the Argies wouldn't have invaded therefore no war.

You had to be there I guess.

makes you think though...

what if the argies had waited a year... how different things could have been eh?

I won´t tell the UN to F off
I´ll withdraw the Falklands patrols instead
then the Argies will invade
then we go to WAR
Then we win
then I win an election

thanks for enlightening me :D

feck off, you know what I mean!

Just because someone is not old enough to remember her as Prime Minister, it doesn't mean they can't have an opinion on her.

And? It does mean that they're too young to have been directly affected by her policies...

From a purely military point of view, if Argentina had waited another year, and given no more warning, then they would have taken delivery of an extra few dozen exocets and they would have won. But they had their own internal politics to consider, which drove their timetable.

When I say would have won, I don't mean could have, I mean would have.

Strange how unexpected events can change history. Was it Macmillan who said "events, dear boy". Well some fecker did.

6/1 labour most seats anybody?

Just for the record, Argentina threatened the Falklands/Malvinas in 1977 and were faced down by Jim Callaghans Labour Government without a war taking place.
Callaghan often said that he "should have had a war".
War is always good for politicians......people are relunctant to appear unpatriotic.
Much as I hate loathe and despise this evil woman she did NOT initiate a war just to stay in power.
I do worship the ground in which the old bitch will be buried.

You have to have planes to launch them from and we would have destroyed the majority of what we hadn't already trashed mainly on the ground. The thing that would have defeated us or at least made the conflict far longer was supply line issues and the impending winter conditions. 6 months would have been favoured the UK far more and in any case 6 months notice would have meant the whole damn thing never happened.

The Argentinian Military Junta was in trouble and looking for a patriotic face saver and they needed it now.

So in summary my Grandma would be my Grandpa if she had nuts.
