Alves' peak was more impressive IMO.

No need to be a prick.
Henry didn't play for Arsenal that season, you had already bought him. That's the point I've been making.
You're only a click away from finding out that you talk nonsense. One click, give it a try, click on Lineups.
Peak Alves was the best RB of all time. It's just how it is.
Sorry to bump. Alves went to another club with massive tactical differences and is tearing the CL up again with two insane assists and very solid defense.
I just feel more and more Marcelo and Alves are not just great, but historically great. Alves blows Lahm out of the water for me.
*edit* Can you please raise my limit of 3 posts? Its incredibly annoying to be quoted and not be able to answer..
Alves is/was a monster regarding his offensive contribution, Lahm is/was an incredibly clever, calm, playmaking left/right fullback and central midfielder. Although they played the same position for the most time of their career, they are quite different and hard to compare imo.
As others pointed out, the choice would be up to the system you play and the other players. If you play an asymmetrical 4-3-3 (with one fullback that is definately more offensive, like Barcelona during Alves time) or a 3-4-3/3-4-1-2 you might want a right fullback/wingback like Alves. If you play with a symmetrical 4-x-x or a "special" system (like Peps 4-2-4 at Bayern where the wingers provided the width and the fullbacks were most of the time hybrids between regular fullbacks and central midfielders), i would rather choose Lahm.
By the way....as english is not my first language....is it right to say "a player is more offensive" as in he is the better attacking player? Or would this rather mean that the player likes to insult other people?![]()
Lahm has done it over a longer period and has performed brilliantly for Germany as well, I don't remember Alves having the same performance for Brazil. I'd take Lahm anyday over Alves.
Lahm was pretty much world class from the get go and already made the team of tournament at the World Cup 2006 and at the Euro 2008. His spectacular opening goal of the World Cup in 2006 certainly created a lot of fuss around him. The following years, the Ribery - Lahm left wing at Bayern was truely excellent (probably the only elite part of our team) between 2007-2009 and there were constant rumours about Barca, Real being interested in signing Lahm.Has he? I'd argue Alves has been at the top for longer than Lahm. He was great for Seville during their back to back UEFA Cup titles, and has been one of the best right backs in the world for around 12 years now. I think Lahm joined that discussion a few years later (around 09/10).
I think Lahm first hit his absolute peak that season, when LvG moved him from LB to RB. But he was renowned as one of the best full backs when he was still at LB the years before.Has he? It can be used in both contexts mate, so you were correct. It never ceases to amaze me that most Germans on here are more lucid than I am when writing in English, and its my first fecking language
.
EDIT: Although 'more offensive' might refer more to the player's style of play being more orientated towards attacking rather than actually being the more skilled attacker. For example, Glen Johnson was probably a more offensive full back than Paulo Maldini, but he wasn't necessarily a better attacker.
This one still cracks me up.

I'd concur but I seem to remember Brwned saying he was only as good as glen johnson?Lahm is the best full back of the last 10 years he is an exceptionally intelligent player to boot.
This..Lahm is the best full back of the last 10 years he is an exceptionally intelligent player to boot.
I love how he never responded after that arrogance.

On the topic, both equally good but Alves was different beast in attacking.
Yeah, people like to mention how crucial Xavi and Iniesta were to Messi but Alves was just as crucial, especially in providing the cutting edge.A lot being mentioned of Lahm's intelligence, but Alves was a player who played on the same wavelength as Messi, Xavi, and Iniesta, and was as integral to that style of play as any of those.
