You’re right it wasn’t the one reason but I feel it was a factor that contributed heavily to that error.
TBF this is something that Croatia exploited pretty well with Rebic and Perisic coming inside at will and causing problems down the flanks for England. Credit where it’s due there. But I do maintain that we would have been better off with a proper CB in that position. Just my opinion though of course you may not agree and that’s cool.

One thing I would like to add as there is nowhere else for it, is the appalling commentary of ITV as usual. I hate their wall to wall adverts, which is why I never watch it unless I have to, but tonight's comments said it all. As soon as the commentary team made their half time observations I winced & feared the worse. Particularly those two Arsenal tools Dixon & Wright. When Dixon was informing us how poor Croatia were & how we should go out & win with ease alarms bells went off. The only exception is the much maligned Roy Keane who correctly said we had to knuckle down when we came out, which we didn't & on the back foot from the start. Personally I wished we had a cull of all these football pundits & have normal fans commenting, as they couldn't talk mush worse rubbish.

Literally all antipathy towards England's football team has to do with the unbearableness of England's media for even the slightest success. And because they have such primacy in an increasingly Anglophone media landscape you have to hear the gloating for decades. I support England at Football (my country being a non entity in footballing terms) but in other sports where I do get to root for my own country - yeah it's pretty bad trying to listen to Hussain or Bob Willis chatting an enormous amount of shite.
Or you know, a century's worth of colonialism isn't going to make you favorably disposed to a nation's football team though of course you might admire the nation in other ways. Hell, the English are still bitter at France for God knows what.

To be fair many English posters don't follow rugby, they don't realize how unbearable they have been during their short period of "glory". I feel that Welsh, French, Irish and Scots are handling themselves pretty well.
