Messi is no Maradona yet, but I do agree that he seems on course to emulate him if he keeps progressing.

One thing he seems to have galore that Maradona never really managed to show in Europe is scoring a ridiculous amount of goals. I don't think it's improbable he'll break the 50-goal barrier at some point.

I don't think he'll ever be as gifted a passer as Diego, but is well on his way to becoming world class in the buildup in his own right. And techniquewise, the pair of them are in a league of their own for the difference to be negligible.

At this rate, another 3-4 seasons more like this I think the consensus will be that he belongs with the select elite that has hitherto consisted of Pele & Maradona.

Please don't compare these peasants to El Pulga

What utter drivel. People seem to get all giddy when Pele and Maradona's names get brought up. There's a reason why Messi's getting legitimate Maradona comparisons now. He's well on his way to equaling or surpassing Diego's accomplishments.

Messi will not be as great a legend as Maradona if he does not win a World Cup.

He's got 10 less goals and nowhere near enough assists. Messi is top of both by a considerable margin in Spain.

Messi has 4 more assists than Ronaldo in La Liga.

Why will Messi not be as great a legend if he wins the world cup?

Also Ronnie has played alot less games
Most 'legends' lead their respective countries to world cup victories.

And I said 4 more assists to show that he doesn't have that much more than Ronaldo despite having played a lot more games.

Please don't compare these peasants to El Pulga

I will tell you this, 'Boss' - A day will come when there will be a reckoning; where the proletariat will rise up and destroy the bourgeoise and their power plays, when the man will bow down and kiss the feet of the lepers and the vaunted halls of the power that be shall be like Pandemonium itself, before its littered ruins become the concrete on which the towers of great equality shall be erected.

On that day, peasants and pulgas will stand before each other without intimidation, amidst burning pedestals and smoking thrones, as the smothering sychophants of the establishment are throttled in the toxic fumes of their pending demise.

On that day, the messis and maradonas of this world shall be weighed and judged by standards void of dogma and received lore.

You best take care where you stand when that day comes, 'Boss'.... I tell you, on that day Messi may yet be weighed favourably against even Maradona himself.

I am looking forward to Messi trying to beat Vermaelen. I'm not sure he will succeed.

I would say Marin is the closest you can find to Messi.
:wenger::lol:
Its laughable to you because its already happening and completely undermines your Ronaldo is better than Messi argument. Messi's skills, form, and stats are already superior to Maradona's at the same time in his career. The WC will merely punctuate this.
Whoa. Was with you, till you started on this. Messi is going great guns at the moment, but he's not in any way superior to Maradona. You say you watched Maradona in the 80's? That leaves me dumbfounded if it is indeed the case.

He scores more goals, yes, but he is in a better team and gets much, much kinder treatment than Maradona did. Andoni Goikoetxea tried to end Maradona's career in 80's La Liga, and Maradona was the most fouled player since Pele in Serie A. Messi, by contrast, is allowed to play, even if he does get a fair amount of fouls and rough treatment, it pales in comparison to what Maradona went through.

Messi also plays a lot closer to goal than Maradona did. Maradona often dropped as deep as Xavi's position to initiate an entire play and then finish it off. Messi does that a handful of times per 5 or so games and isn't a patch on Maradona for it.

He's currently at the level Maradona was at at 16 playing for Argentinos Juniors. He has a long, long way to go to be surpassing Maradona.

And he would have to perform like he has this week for well over 8-9 seasons straight, plus win a World Cup or two to be getting up there with Pele.

These goalscoring or performance rates aren't a new phenomenon - it's just been a long time since players of this calibre have been around, and for Messi to get up to their level, he'll have to meet that standard for at least the next five years.

Because most people seem to be obsessed with his ability to dribble past players, apparently dribbling is much more important than shooting from distance or heading...

It is the most dangerous attribute in football for an attacking player, and Messi is up there with anyone to have played the game in this aspect. He can take apart teams by himself with his brilliance, where as attributes such as heading are reliant on the service of the other team members.

People always go "so and so is good at this, but player y is good at this", but it just doesn't work here, especially given how good Messi actually is at running at players. A player who is an excellent dribbler of the footbll isn't just aesthetically pleasing - he's also likely to be the most damaging player on the pitch. Taking on and beating just one player causes havoc amongst even the best defences, nevermind beating 3 or 4 men like Messi does.

Messi has 4 more assists than Ronaldo in La Liga.

I doubt he will seeing as he's gash for Argentina. But seriously, the reason why they can't be compared is because Messi hasn't an ounce of Maradona's passing ability(best ever in that department and all in my book). . .nor his stature or charisma - he also didn't play in non contact era.

yeah people overlook the fact that the game has become a non contact sport. People also forget how great a passer Maradona was - I'm talking better than Zidane. People also forget that he carried the likes of Argentina and Napoli to titles, when they clearly weren't the best sides around. Messi probably plays in the best team in the world with some brilliant players, but looks a completely different player for Argentina. He'll probably make the third tier of greats and the second at a stretch. For me Ronaldo's come closest to the top tier in the last couple of decades.

Great post. People in here are losing perspective.

For what we're reading about Messi today, you could have said the same for Ronaldinho five years ago. I'd rather let the dust settle on his career before reeling out the Maradona comparisons.

'stature and charisma' are very undefinable and perhaps questionable factors.

non-contact era is a meaningless argument. You can only beat what is in front of you and both go past what is in front of them like no one else. Conversely, defences are much better organised and press at a higher pace than in previous eras.

I fully agree on passing ability, but I think it's worth taking messi's goals into consideration. If he scores 30+ goals for another 3-4 years, that is a major achievement that does weigh favourably for him.

Napoli was hardly Barcelona though.

Messi, like Pele, by any measure, had the easier task.

And is consequently winning major trophies and scoring bucketloads as the leading man.

Maradona also played for barca. Are we going to say he would never have been the BPITWEva if he had stayed with barca and (hypothetically) won everything worth winning with them?

Yes.

Maradona's pure fight and determination is what will always keep imposters away. He was a leader Robson/Keane style - the team played through him as well as because of him

It's like he needed to be in the deepest shyte (read his bio) to bring out the best in him.

So you people want Messi to play for a much weaker team and carry them for titles otherwise he can never be categorized with the greater players????

uh..ok

..and who exactly of the top tier players played for weaker teams and carried them for titles beside Maradona?

Thinking that that is a criterion to judge players is a ridiculous argument. Football is a team sport. Never ever did a single player carry his team to glory. This is a myth. No one did it, neither Maradona with Napoli or Argentina nor anyone else. These teams were good enough and Maradona was the shining star within them. But you can't win titles -especially a league- with 10 weak players and 1 superb one.

By the way, Barcelona is a collection of stars ,yet still Messi is the first name that jumps to mind when the team is mentioned.Tells a lot about his talent

He's 22, he can still win the world cup if not this time then in 4 years when he's 26 or 8 when he's 30. There is so much more he can do and when he retires he'll be remembered as a great. If he even gets close to being ranked around Maradona/Pele that'll be extrordinary as these two names Pele and Maradona are mythical.

No, it's not meaningless. Messi would've probably been fouled out of the game - it was only Maradona's courage, strength and skill that kept him on his feet and in the game. And charisma and stature were quite evident when he pulled games out of the hat - and he didn't rely on other equally as good players around him. As for defences being better now, Maradona played in the SerieA when catenaccio was the name of the game. As for Messi's goals, he'll have to be instrumental for Argentina to gain proper recognition - for the moment he's a brilliant player in a brilliant side.

Thats the point. Maradona did exactly that.

Well, I saw close to it in 86. In fact the closest anyone got to winning a WC on their own. As I said, he's no way near Maradona - that's based on what I've seen of both players. And Messi does nothing for Argentina that tells me even more. . .

Thats the point. Maradona did exactly that.

No he didn't. Again football is a team sport. I don't know the Napoli squad, but I am sure they were good enough to win a title when mixed with a brilliant player

Make your mind up.

How old are you?

Fair play but it's well accepted that the Argie team had some great players, didn't Jorge Valdano score 5 goals in the 86 tournament, I'm not saying Maradona wasn't the leading star but to say there was 1 great player and 10 weaklings has to be nonsense.

It has to be....Marcos....Help!

Make your mind up.

Why? That's not contradictory.

I didn't watch serie A back then. I am basing all my argument on the fact that football is a team sport.

It doesn't add up that one extraordinary player carries an entire weak squad to a league title

Valdano and Burrchaga were the only decent players they had besides Maradona. Yeah he virtually won it single-handedly. But seriously most of you kids aren't qualified to even pass comment. . .

I don't buy that either, I'm sure Napoli had some decent players on them!

Ok,can't find the whole squad yet, but as a start Ferrara, Alemao and Carica were in that squad. Not the world beaters ,but good enough players who represented their national teams at that time

Messi is the most fouled player on the planet and whilst the treatment will never be as rough as Maradona had it due to the increased protection of skillful players since maybe Van Bastens career was cut short.

Teams still try and foul him out the game, he stays on his feet and does damage by not going to ground. Like el Classico last season where he was kicked by just about every player in the madrid team, dirty fouls with intent. They tried to kick him out of the game and failed.
