Liverpool

A few stats:

48% of the sides who were top by Christmas finished as champions
86% of the sides who were top by Christmas finished in the top 3
95% of the sides who were top by Christmas finished in the top 4. Only Villa in 1998 failed to finish in the top 4.

:D

The last three times Liverpool have been top at Christmas they have failed to win the title (90-91, 96-97, 08-09).

:(

It's a sad state of affairs when this is the most reassuring stat I've heard all week.

Right there with you Kid. For the first time in a long time I can´t laugh when I see Liverpool fans claiming this is their year. Its industrial language scary.

I said that 'most' Liverpool fans will disappear. I hope that I'm wrong though.

BTW, I do not understand why opposition fans are treated like that on here. Please give the man his actual user name. "Retardman" speaks bad for the forum.

My username was changed by the mods after I overstepped the boundaries as to what is acceptable by an opposition fan on a Manchester United forum during the Suarez/Evra saga. The punishment could have been worse (total ban) so on that score I think I got away lightly. Besides, it's not as though they do it to all the oppo fans on here.

Like I say, I've been on here through thick & thin - mostly thin I have to add - so no matter what happens, I'll still be around (hopefully) for the foreseeable future.

Ah, ok then.

I do wonder how their form will pan out considering once Suarez starts tiring!

Why should he, given that they do not play in Europe and are out of the League cup? What to expect then about Evra or Rooney who have played a lot more this season and are going to play in the CL as well?

I don't know why everyone seems to assume Liverpool are going to lose the next two games. They're not likely to win them, but if Chelsea produce a performance similar to that one against them and Suarez can have a good game against Chelsea's defence then Liverpool have a good chance. I struggle to see them beating City away, but they look more likely than most sides to be able to do it to be fair.

IMO, they'll get max one point from these two games. I expect City to beat them relatively comfortably; they could hope for a draw at SB. Personally, I expect them to be 5th after the next two games. If they manage to get more points, then they'll be genuine title contenders, especially if they get something at City's ground.

I haven't posted much for ages for various reasons, yet when we struggled last year I posted regularly. I actually do the opposite of this theory therefore.
Need to have a word with myself perhaps!

The league table doesn't lie. Liverpool are the best of a bad bunch this Christmas. I don't think they've improved massively from last season, shows you how far others have fallen.

Not sure on that, we have improved a lot and have a confidence and swagger at home that's been missing for a long time. It has been an odd season I agree but I think we are where we are on merit. After all the team with the most points deserves to be on top, however short lived it may be.

Yeah it could have been worse. Like B18, who became B19...who became B20!

And that's taking into account the fact that they were missing a finisher for the first few games of the season and could have easily been 4-6 points better off had Lukaku joined them earlier (especially West Brom and Cardiff games).

We should have won the Cardiff game without him anyway. Medel/Bellamy could have been off and we should have had a definite penalty...but you get these games every year which go against you.

I suppose it's often easier to comment after your teams lost since you can go into detail about problems and flaws, and we all love a good moan sometimes. While, on the other hand, after a win there's maybe not always as much you feel you have to say.

Good man R5, you always responded to the abuse well, I can't even remember what it was before retardman now. Did I give you the Evra avatar too or was that someone else?

Their official Twitter was so smalltime yesterday. Saying something like "Merry Christmas Liverpool fans. Top of the league at Christmas" Which is fair enough, but then they added "Man Utd are 8th"

I wonder if it's ever happened before where a team that's first at Christmas won't even be top 4 come new years day?

So B20 it is then for the foreseeable future. ;)

I'm not so sure, depends entirely on Moyes' ability to get quality into the midfield.

Despite the maureen hype and nonsense though, I think if you hold onto suarez for next season, with City you will be our biggest obstacle to 21.

Never happened in the PL era apparently.

The points difference has never been this close. If results go a certain way a team could jump or drop 5 or so spots in a week.

Didn't Hull almost go from Top 4 at Christmas to relegation in May one year? They stayed up on the last day despite us beating them 0-1 with a Gibson thunderbolt. (The time Phil Brown sang on the pitch with the microphone on the last day.)

99% of posters were expecting a title challenge when Moyes took over. Those expectations have been lowered after seeing him at work.

I think most fans thought that we would struggle to retain the title. I don't think that most fans expected a seamless transition, our squad overperformed last season, and our competitors underperformed.

The second half of the season see us take on 6 teams in the top 8 at home and United away, but sure we've had an easy start to the season ;)

Liverpool look very good unfortunately. Let's hope Chelsea do them at the Bridge as well though I very much doubt that given their form

How has Luis Alberto looked in limited action?

Slow, but very composed. Always finds good options with the ball.

He should play more. Imo, Rodgers really should have been making more use of his squad when we take the lead. It's fine that he thinks Gerrard doesn't need resting, but maybe we don't need him playing 90 minutes either, when we've got players we'll be needing to rely on later on not getting minutes.

You wouldn't trust him in a game like this because he hasn't been given a chance to show if he can be trusted.

Annoying that Moses gets minutes by default because he's a winger though. Hope he leaves in January. Taking the piss here.
