Every team raise their game. You think Man Utd players approach a game vs Southampton at home the same way they approach Barcelona or Bayern away?
The difference is that you have the ability/ much more importantly belief that most other teams in the league don't have to push through those results against the shitter teams even when you're at the lower level.
Liverpool play United like it's a cup final every time. If they were able to translate a fraction of that attitude to other games they would be in a much better position. And they are cnuts.
They were poor but we happened to be worse on that day.

Completely agree with the last sentence. It doesn't mean that all teams aren't game raisers though. Any team will approach a major final against a big team in a different way to a standard game against a midtable team. Cos we're playing with humans. Some players are able to maintain the same level for every game and they're freaks. When most players and teams become like this, we'll be playing with robots and not humans.
Its fair to say Rodgers had a brain fart of a team selection today, just like Mourinho earlier and no doubt many other managers in their time. A Sunday pub team could have pressed us high up the pitch and got a result - it was that idiotic and predictable. We couldn't run our bollocks off because of the shit formation.
Its not about a game raiser in this case. Just plain shit thinking. It was that obviously shit that even Brendan will not dare go down that road again. Expect better (i.e. more pressing) from us next game.
Remember we're a 6th place team AT BEST with a shit squad. Having Glen Johnson, Enrique, Coutinho and Suarez out was going to cause problems to our limited expectations.

It was hilarious listening to the Scouse fans on 606 this evening. They seem to have forgotten they are joint top of the league& have had their best start to the league for years.

Pressure them high up the pitch and they are fooked. Gve their defenders no time and they panic because quite simply, they are just not good enough technically to do what Rodgers asks of them. You can see them dying to just boot it into Row Z but it's clear as day they have been told something along the lines of "I'd rather concede a goal every now and again from losing the ball playing it 'the right way', than I would concede possession by kicking it into touch".
They just aren't that good a side There is always an average team that starts the season reasonably well and is higher in the first month or so than they should be/will end up being. This year it's Liverpool. They'll be back to the same old shite in no time.

I don't understand why they bought Mignolet if they want to involve the keeper in the build-up so often. When Villas-Boas tried to play a high line with Terry it was stupid but at least it was understandable - Terry was going to be gradually phased out for a more suitable player in the next window or two. Likewise with Martinez and Tim Howard. With Mignolet it makes no sense. He's picked him to be their keeper for years to come and yet he's blatantly uncomfortable with the ball at his feet.

The defenders seem equally uncomfortable on the ball too though. They slag Evans and are unable to see his quality, but the fact is that he is a better defender than anything they have and would be the perfect player for that possession game they are trying.

Wasn't that to being given the ball at awkward times and having no defender as an outlet to pass to because Southampton closed them down so aggressively? He is a fecking good shot-stopper which I guess they felt trumped any weakness he has with the ball at his feet.
I agree, he's a good buy for sure. I just don't think he fits into this ”We play with 11 men, other teams play with 10 men and a goalkeeper.” setup.
Not with his feet he hasn't. Surely you have to recognise that? He made a fantastic triple save in your last match following a mess up with the ball at his feet.
I'm happy for us to make allowances for that so long as he keeps up with the saves he is making at the moment.
The Rodgers of the present is a changed man from a year ago. He arrived firmly set on 4-3-3 and an emphasis on possession and patient buildup and looked like he was going with the "excelling in one method is better than being good in several" approach, damn the consequences.
The past 7 months we've scored most of our goals breaking early and quickly and this season has seen us happy to concede the lion's share of possession and sit back as well to maintain leads. And mostly, it's been 4-4-2 with Henderson tucked in. He's proving to be a lot more pragmatic than I first assumed.
Everybody's given up the Barca (Arsenal/Swansea) tenet that possession is 9/10ths of the law. Even Barca, Swansea and Arsenal.
