Van Gaal: The verdict

  • 1) Sack him now.

  • 2) Sack him at the end of the season.

  • 3) Let him see out his contract and part ways after that.

  • 4) Extend his contract.

  • Undecided (between 1 and 2).

  • Undecided (between 2 and 3).

  • Undecided (between 3 and 4, if things improve before his contract expires, extend).

I'm quite a big critic of LvG but I fail to see why anyone would want him sacked before the end of the season. It's just not worth risking the turmoil it would cause right now.

If we have a really bad run then perhaps but there's enough quality in our team that it's an unlikely scenario.

the same way city, everton, liverpool and wolfsburg did ?
You're doing it wrong buddy. It's the mythical and hypothetical games you have to worry about, not what's actually happening right now.
The same way Blind is playing well 'but he'll struggle when up against the physical players later on in the season' or ' the pacy forwards will expose him as the season goes on'
If tomorrow never comes and all that

Talk of sacking LVG right now is pure madness.

There is a basis for criticism, however. We dug out the win last night but our attacking play over the course of the season is too slow and ponderous and we fail to put out the best possible XI on the pitch, week in week out. Rotation of players who need rest or are out form is entirely appropriate, but that standard has to be applied to every single player on the squad.

He's gotta be trolling. Mike has been your best player (wantaway goalie excepted) for a while now, he has to know the guys bloody name by now!

LvG out. Hasn't learnt our players' names after 18 months. Moyes was better.
Lol

Dire stuff. Hope LvG makes a change or two in the 2nd.

At this point there is not much LVG can do. He cant turn Rooney into an aguero/ronaldo who can create things and cause havoc by running at a defence.

We just don't have the personnel to easily break down a team that sits back with 11 men. There isn't enough pace on the flanks nor are we seeing people with the ability to thread a throughball in the middle.

The possession greatly helps our defending but teams just don't even bother to come out their own box anymore. A team like wba will always be happy with one point.

Really? I'm not watching this game, sorry I reading opinions one here...which seem to be split. Some think we've been good whilst others like yourself think we've been dire.

Is there really a need for explanation after watching this first half, or any of our recent games?
We showed an attacking spirit today, and it was an improved performance. So I don't know what your problem is today

I dont know how people can compare todays game (or CSKAs) to the dire games vs Palace or City.

Today we played some good football but had a team intent on defending. Anyone would struggle

We weren't really good, we hardly created anything apart from two or three good chances. We didn't even had lot of decent chances which don't count as real chances.

If Lingard didn't score that wonder goal I seriously couldn't see how we could score something that isn't individual skill from one of our players.

Which ones of the recent games? Against CSKA at home, Everton away, or against Palace or City?

We were bit better against CSKA, but yeah, any of those games considering we have scored 2 goals in last 5 games before this.

Are people actually complaining? WBA defended well (Evans was very good) and we actually showed attacking intent.

If you don't make the distinction between the games which seriously lacked creativity and the games where that wasn't the problem, it's seems to be more about the narrative than the actual matches.

Chances created from open play in our league + CL matches:

Tottenham Hotspur (H) - 4 (we won 1:0)
Aston Villa (A) - 7 (we won 1:0)
Newcastle United (H) - 14 (we drew 0:0)
Swansea City (A) - 10 (we lost 2:1)
Liverpool (H) - 5 (we won 3:1)
PSV Eindhoven (A) - 13 (we lost 2:1)
Southampton (A) - 4 (we won 3:2)
Sunderland (H) - 8 (we won 3:0)
VfL Wolfsburg (H) - 10 (we won 2:1)
Arsenal (A) - 8 (we lost 3:0)
Everton (A) - 9 (we won 3:0)
CSKA Moscow (A) - 5 (we drew 1:1)
Manchester City (H) - 4 (we drew 0:0)
Crystal Palace (A) - 3 (we drew 0:0)
CSKA Moscow (H) - 11 (we won 1:0)
West Brom (H) - 9 (we won 2:0)

Had a lull between the Everton game and the second Moscow game (including the Middlesbrough game which I don't have stats for) but we've had a few more chances in the last couple of matches. Still find it tricky to break down very defensive sides but today's game was the sort we probably would have ended up drawing 0:0 last year.

There is a difference between those games, but in general we have struggled to create lot of chances in last two games too. Better teams could create much more chances today than we did.

There was nothing wrong with the amount of chances against CSKA, it could have been bigger chances, but that's different. If you have a lot possession like in the City game or Palace game and only a few chances, there's a problem with getting from having possession in the defence to getting the ball in or near the box. That's a big problem, because you don't know what to do with that possession. If you manage to get the ball in and near the box but the chances aren't that great, it's a problem with the execution, and that's a much smaller problem.

Whose stat is this? For today, I'd say we had the following chances, using a fairly broad definition:

-Lingard's goal
-The penalty
-Martial's turn and shot at Myhill
-Mata's low curling miss from the Rooney pass
-Mata snatched at a volley after Martial headed it to him following a blocked West Brom clearance in corner
-That great block Evans had from Lingard

and then I'd struggle to count any of the other. Lingard had a shot from outside the box go wide, we had a couple shots blocked, but none of them looked at all dangerous unless I'm forgetting something.

Powered by Opta. Not sure what they class as a chance especially as one of the arrows for today's game is right by the sideline.

What counts as a chance exactly because their keeper had one of the quietest days he'll have all season?

Chance doesn't mean the goalkeeper makes a save

No but we didn't exactly have a host of other chances. Chances not hitting the target suggest they're a little difficult which would call into question how many of them would actually qualify.

Have you or are you going off their clean sheet record?
More than I'd like, they might well be the dullest team in the league. On the bright side when their defence breaks down they usually concede because they're utter shit. There's a reason he's been less busy than Cech and De Gea this season.

Stoke, Villa, Palace and Norwich have all had as many or more shots on target against them than we mustered. And one of ours was a penalty.

Reckon Martial would have failed to hit the target do you?
Yeah, so one team has had more than 5 shots against them in away matches. Shots on target a silly way to measure "being busy" anyway. He got closer to Mata's effort in the first half than the penalty, just because it was off target doesn't mean he didn't dive for it. Berahino had the best chance of the game and stuck it miles over, still willing to bet De Gea had a little bit of wee come out when he made contact.
