Louis van Gaal's interview with BBC

I keep wondering what would happen if we gave him 300mil budget for third season. I have huge respect for him as world class manager and i strongly believe that he would transform that boring possession football into attacking possession football.

You could say that about most managers tbf. How would Jose have done if we’d just given him even more money? The fact is LvG was backed with hundreds of millions of pounds, spunked it on average players some of whom we’re still lumbered with now, then played the most boring football I’ve ever seen in my life. There’s nothing to indicate he’d have played any differently if he’d carried on for another season, or that results would’ve improved which is utimately what got him the sack. He’d have just retired as planned, after another season of shit-on-a-stick football, and another 300m down the drain.

Van Gaal didn't sign Herrera and Shaw though. Both players were signed by the board while he was still at the world cup.

The players signed by Van Gaal were Blind, Darmain, Rojo, injury ridden Falcao who was on a loan, injury prone Schweisteiger (these players were taken in for few squids). The only high cost signings he made were Martial and Di Maria who didn't want to come here in the first place and left for PSG as quick as he came here. Besides, we already recouped most of his signing fees. Depay and Morgan Schneiderlin's cost of signing were a bit high also. These were the players signed by Van Gaal. I could recall he wanted Sadio Mane but the board didn't want to meet Southampton's asking price hence he had to settle for Depay.

I could only imagine what could have happened if he had an attacking trio of Mane, Martial and Rashford in front of his midfield, albeit a sluggish midfield of ageing slow Carrick, past it sluggish Rooney and a lethargic Fellaini. The point is, the boring sluggish possession style was quite expected if we take into cognizance the sluggish non creative players he had in the midfield. Only if he had at least one creative pacy midfielder in his midfield then we could have done a lot better. That said, he should culp the blame for his failure to bring a creative midfielder during the transfer window but then, that would be at the expense of Rooney.

In fact, I would say Rooney was Van Gaal's achilles here because he was part of the slow ageing players that contributed a lot to the sluggish boring style but Van Gaal was always giving him a pat on the back and kept on saying his captain must always play but eventually, Rooney was part of the players that wanted Van Gaal out because he didn't buy the idea of being deployed in the central midfield which he had thought would stop him from breaking Manutd goal record. Funny how the first thing the subsequent coach, Mourinho did was to bench Rooney and mostly use him as a sub. He also made sure the ageing Carrick was out of his team because these two players were the factors that contributed a lot to the slow possession style under Van Gaal.

While Van Gaal could be blamed for failing to bring in quality into the midfield, we shouldn't forget the fact that he did his best with the poor squad sprinkled with few young talent he had. He got the best out of Blind who was one of our best defenders as well as promoted our young players (Rashford, Lingard, Brothwick Jackson). He won the FA cup and got us fighting for the top four till the end of the season. If he had better talents under him, he could have done better and have us playing better football.
