Luis Nani | 2012/13 Performances

I'm hoping he starts against QPR and looking forward to his performance even more tbh as he'll be playing on a pitch with even fecking grass. The crowd of course gives us an advantage at home, but at the moment I prefer to see us away due to the state of our pitch. For the type of attacking players we have, it really isn't up to it at the moment.

Nah you're right I get that a misplaced pass shouldn't even matter after his performance last night, like iv said he was good and it's nice to see him come back into the team and play like that. I don't want to make a case against Nani being a bad player because he's brilliant all im saying is that he has an annoying style of play at times, he can dribble around 3 players then knock the 5 yard pass to a teammate out for a throw in, that's the sort of frustration I get at times while watching Nani. He does the hard things extremely well and the easy things he makes look difficult at times, it's just something I find annoying.

That's fair, and he does do it, but I look at it like the stuff he does is generally riskier play than what we'd get from someone like Valencia or Young, but then the reward is often far greater. He also - and I have nothing to back this up - seems to be on the ball more than Valencia, and is definitely more direct, again it's higher risk play but then that is the difference between the two wingers, one is basically always in all out attack mode, the other is cautious. As long as he is matching that frustration with productivity, I don't really care about some bad choices in the game, it's always going to happen.

*Said I'd wait until the Nani explosion calmed*

He was very good last night. He was given time on the ball and utilized it very well. Goal aside, his play near the end when he set Wells off was class.

Don't go too OTT just yet though. It was Reading and we know he has this performance in him. Its pulling that off and adding to it. Almost a certainty to start the weekend and I desperately hope he picks up where he left off.

When playing well (and he played well for a long time before his injuries) Nani looks a class above those around him. How many players like that do we have? There's RvP and ......... maybe Wayne, on the increasingly rare occasions when he's firing on all cylinders.

Letting a player like that go shouldn't be done lightly. Unless his wage demands are very unreasonable, I hope we make every effort to keep him.

Because it was a simple pass that could have led to a goal/chance. It didn't take away from his overall performance but you can see why some people would moan at not doing the simple things right, even more so after he's just shown what he's capable of. All im saying that he's a top player but at times he's frustrating.

This is what I find strange. The bits that make people pick on him, well too bad he scored, assisted, hit the post, required two great saves from Federici. A pass, and other minor things are surely things to be moaning about.

I get what you are saying, but unless you are expecting a player that rarely misses a pass or a decision, you are putting way too much emphasis on his wrongs, and undermining his rights. Especially on Nani, a player where you can expect the unexpected, a flair move, a brilliant shot, a really tight pass. Those are way more riskier things to be done, and even a more talented player is bound to make a couple more misses on those.

I think it bodes well for the player and the team. It can only serve to our benefit we can bring players from the bench who can make a difference.

Was refreshing to see him back. His unpredictability really put their defence in a whole new light.

Proper impact sub and hopefully this we'll see more of it the coming weeks. Put Ronaldo in his shadow next week?

Hope Nani starts at QPR.

Valencia has been consistently poor in the last few games, and has created pretty much nothing of note.

Nani looked so so much more dangerous when coming on last night, he did more in 10 minutes than valencia did all the first half.

He was surely in need of a game to get confidence, and trying to get back to his older self. Hopefully that continues, and he seemed to give Fergie a new spark on why he is so important to the team.

To be fair, Valencia did assist Nani yesterday.

Great to see him back and putting in a very good performance.Hopefully he can keep it going and find some consistency from now on.I love the directness of his play, not afraid to have a shot and baffles defenders with his unpredictability.

In terms of technical ability, before this season I'd agree, but RVP is technically our best player IMO.

That's what I've always said. It's always good to have players that are willing to take shots from distance. Especially one with the technique of Nani.

Before he came on, we looked very short on ideas. In fact, we at times looked almost Arsenal-like. Sometimes you need that player that's going to take a few risks when the chips are a bit down and Nani has always been that type of player.

People always mention Nani's inconsistency - but to a certain extend it's his unpredictability that makes him such an asset. Will he shoot, will he dribble, will he go past you on the left on the right. I'm not even sure Nani knows most of the time.

It makes him really fustrating, but also brilliant. There's not many players like him really, and him being in the team can be the difference. You need these difference players to be great. But you also need good players around for when what he does doesn't work out.

It should certainly earn him a place in the team on Saturday. I don't know where we're going with Nani after this season, but there's not a whole lot we can do about it now. So it's short term that matters right now. We've tried and tried with Valencia, played him time and time again, but it's just not happening for him. Hopefully he comes back into form, but Nani has given us a hint and opened the door. He should be getting the chances.

He changed the game the moment he walked on the pitch yesterday. I say unleash the Nani against our next few opponents, including Real. By my calculations, we'll need three goals to go throug to the next knockout round.

 What calculations are these Ruud? Not that I disagree, I think it'll be a goal fest at OT.

Just saw his goal now. What a superb piece of skill. Such quick and accurate feet, what a first touch that was.

That's always one of the things I most liked about him, his goal against City in CS, or his last league goal against city, this year in league cup against Chelsea, that goal against Tottenham when he chipped Gomez, all those were ridiculously good first touches that allowed him to get into good position in first place, and after that his finishing was excellent. Gotta love players like him, can't understand how people get frustrated with couple of fecked up passes after all those good things he gives to team.

I don't understand how we've let it get to a situation where in we face losing him for a value that does not represent his true qualities. I know we are 12 points ahead in the league with minimal contribution from Nani but if we are to replace him with another player of similar talent, quality and productivity then we'll have to spend well in excess of 30m.

If he is to go, it's very rare in recent times that we've gone all out for an instant ready-made replacement. That kind of argument is almost irrelevant.

But, most will agree that the ideal situation is that he signs a new contract. But if he is to go, hopefully in time we find a solution...whether it's through the growth of Zaha or another player. This notion that we would have to spend 30m big ones to instantly replace him needs quelling, especially because as you say he's been anonymous to the cause for the most-part of the season (which could well go down as a very successful one).

Nick Coppack's blog:

Manchester United winger Nani started Monday’s FA Cup tie against Reading on the bench and ended it a hero.

The Reds’ brightest spark by some distance, the Portuguese scored one and set up another to send Sir Alex’s men into the quarter-finals, where Middlesbrough or Chelsea now await.

Broadcasters ESPN wasted no time handing Nani the Man of the Match champagne at the final whistle, while users on ManUtd.com have also voted the tricky winger the Reds’ star man. By some distance, too. Indeed, despite impressive performances from captain Nemanja Vidic (who bravely battled on, bloodied after an early collision), Tom Cleverley and Alexander Büttner, Nani garnered 85 per cent of the vote.

It’s an overwhelming victory and one that will mean a lot to the 26-year-old who’s been forced, largely through injury, to play a supporting role this season. One national newspaper even described him as “the forgotten man” this morning.

True, Nani hasn’t hogged many headlines in recent times (why would he when a hamstring injury sidelined him for 15 matches and more than two months?), but United fans’ memories aren’t so short. They still remember the player who, in 2010/11, contributed as much as anybody to the Reds’ record-breaking 19th league title and was widely regarded as one of the world’s most dangerous wingers. They still remember the player who terrorised Manchester City at Wembley in the Community Shield last season and delivered the final, fatal blow with an ice-cool injury-time winner.

And it’s precisely because Nani is capable of scaling such heights that supporters have, on occasion, been quick to jump on his back. Different standards apply to those who are different class, and Nani, as we saw on Monday night, is certainly a rare breed of footballer.

He can light up matches with the drop of a shoulder, a cheeky backheel, a driving run or long-range rocket. His courage to take the ball in tight spaces and faith in his ability never wavers. He believes he can make a difference, and often does. When the Reds lack tempo or struggle to break down stubborn defences, it’s Nani, time and time again, who conjures something out of nothing.

Sure, not every trick comes off and there have been times when he’s shot when he should have passed, or passed when he should have shot. He’s not perfect. But what you always get with Nani is a constant desire to place himself at the centre of United’s play, take responsibility and affect change.

He did exactly that on Monday. Sir Alex’s men lacked inspiration in the first half, but within minutes of his introduction Nani crashed a 20-yard volley against the post and drew a smart save from Royals goalkeeper Adam Federici.

In the second period, he took the game by the scruff of the neck, running at defenders and linking with Antonio Valencia on the right flank before breaking the deadlock with a superb goal from 15 yards. Three minutes later, he whipped over a tantalising cross for Javier Hernandez to nod home at the near post.

It’s no surprise Nani romped to victory in our Man of the Match poll: he was head and shoulders above every other player on the pitch. Now his challenge is to convince Sir Alex he’s worthy of a consistent run in the starting XI. If he does that, Nani may yet play a leading role in United’s charge for three major trophies. Fit and firing on all cylinders, there a few better players in England.

Good blog I reckon, although the bold proves that Nick obviously doesn't read the caf. :p

Well thats the important thing.. It was against Reading and he treated played like he should.. I prefer that than him to under perform against weak opposition.

Even if he is off in the summer, a great end to the season would be a nice way for him to end his career with us and ensure we get circa £20-25 million for him. We'd be getting robbed if we sell him for less than that.

Zenit were paying that much in the summer, i think but he didn't want to go there/demanded big wages.

Hope he stays though, as he can quality when on form.

Did Fergie praise him in his post match interview?

This is what he said...

"His contribution was terrific," Sir Alex told the club's official website.

"Just after coming on he had two great strikes, one hit the post and the other one was saved. In the second half he got us the opening goal and I had the feeling he would win the match for us.

"I think he deserved it. He's a fantastic talent. You could see he was right on form when he came on. He's a good addition. If he keeps that form, it makes my job more difficult."

I've read a few comments like, 'calm down on its only Reading'

None of our wingers were doing what he was against the same Reading, or in previous games against 'lesser' teams

feckin this! I saw the same shite in discussions about Bale (still think he's overrated). Most of the teams we face are going to be "it's only x" kind of team. No reason belittling their performance when the desired result is the same. Nani helped us advance to the next round of the FA Cup. Whether that's against City or Huddersfield, in the end, he did what we needed him to do.

Obviously as a fan, you take more stock in the bigger games but too often I feel we brush a player's performance when we face a weaker team. We already know Nani has the capability to perform in the bigger games, so what are we trying to discuss here?

I think what some are trying to say is, let's not get carried away with one performance. This is fair but you can excuse the praise due to Nani's situation. It's nice to see a gifted player turn in a performance like that. Minimizing it by saying "it's only Reading" just stinks of sour grapes to me. Did anyone say "it's only Wigan" when van Persie scored that peach of a goal?

Nani needs a run of games. Hopefully he can keep up this performance and build some momentum. It's quite clear we'll need him through the business end of the season. That's how I think it should be viewed. Not resorting to "it's only Reading". Consistency is the name of the game.

He was terrific, nobody can deny that. I've also noticed since his come-back that he seems to have cut most of the unnecessary bullshit and when the ambitious pass/play isn't on, he makes simple (correct) passes.

Now if he can be like that week in week out or at least every other game, we're tremendously placed for the season's final hunt.

Good piece from Nick Coppack as well, although he went slightly ott at times.

Find a way to play him against Madrid, Nani will be fired up like possessed. Nani, Kagawa, Rooney, Van Persie, Welbeck will be too much for them to cope with defensively. I can't wait for the return leg.

Although I admit I had to look up Świdnik on the internet to find out where it is, I couldn't agree with you more, Tomuś.

On his day Nani is extremely difficult to cope with. Although I think we'd need a bit more defensive grit than what you're suggesting here, Fergie should seriously consider going with Nani and Welbeck v Real next time. He probably won't go with Kagawa so that he can go with Cleverley, so something like this:

Keeper and back four, who need no introduction here
Carrick/Cleverley
Nani/Rooney/Welbeck
RvP

This means no Jones (to deal with Ronaldo), but based on what Nani showed us yesterday that seems like a decent tradeoff. You could drop Welbz and have Valencia on for defensive duty, I suppose, but either way the stars seem aligned for Nani. But let's see how he deals with QPR and/or Norwich first.

That's an impressive player-cam considering the man only came on after 40 minutes.

One thing I'd forgotten about how good an in-form Nani is, is just how involved he gets in our play, he almost takes on a roaming role to join in the play all over the pitch, so much more involved than a regular winger.

Downplaying grit and hard work was never my purpose. In fact, I'm all for it, hence my continuous defense of players like Valencia (in his current mode), Park etc. I'm just curious and a bit tempted after watching the first leg - their back four really looked easily penetrable.

That's why I stated we should find a way to use him. If we could just find the balance between stopping them: Kagawa, Jones(?) Carrick, back five + Rooney and Welbeck(?) on the wings and exposing ourselves: Nani? Rooney, Welbeck, Van Persie, Kagawa. I think something along the lines would really prove too much for Madrid. It was there for all to see they can be gone at even at home, let's see how they can take it away from home, with the addition of another flair player in Nani.
