Luka Modric / Signs for Real Madrid

With Carrick at 31 and Scholes at 37 I can't see why buying Modric is considered such a frivolity, even at c.30 million

Read that earlier. Good article.

People are too concerned about stats, and how 'oh he doesn't score enough, or he doesn't get enough assists' but if you just watch him you know that he is pure class.

I think United will get him still, he will be the one to succeed Scholes and if he does come to United I think he will reach an even higher level than he is at already.

It would be good for United to secure the deal (if possible) before Croatia's first match in the Euros, because lets face it if he has a good tournament Levy will get a few extra more million out of him.

It screams out to me that our main problem is controlling possession in the centre of the park. Especially with Carrick needing backup, and the way we improved this when Scholes came back (but he won't last forever). I can't see why we should favour some kind of destroyer over buying Modric

He would be a more potent scorer for us. Certainly having Carrick, Scholes, and Modric to choose from wouldn't be bad thing.

Do you actually think this will happen ? I can't tell whether this is just the usual bollocks or not.

The thing is though when scholes returned it wasn't like we were struggling in the middle due to our midfielders not being able to keep possession but simply because with fletch, clev and ando all out we were left with only giggs and jones as options there.

Scholes return was great but we still struggled in tougher games as a consequence of a lack of another defensively strong player. Not a destroyer but just someone who can come in and be solid as well as keep us ticking. Fletcher is the only one beyond carrick that can provide this and he's a massive doubt to play again let alone get back to his best.

You can buy modric or whoever but without that other defensive option than the midfield will be very exposed when carrick can't play either due to injury, tiredness or suspension let alone form and tough games where we need more stability there. I mean modric as a minimum has Parker a far more defensive player than carrick and in some bigger games they even get two players holding in the middle and let modric play slightly wider where he has less of a defensive burden.

It'd be great to get modric, especially at that price, but the more urgent need is another defensively competent player. If we can get both than no issues but if we can only get one I think that takes precedent over modric.

I can't be certain, but Fergie has said a few times that he is a big admirer of him. I just think with Scholes being at the end of his career, Modric is a ready made fit to replace him for years to come.

Then again, he has said he won't overspend on a player.

While I'm not sure about Modric I don't think we need an defensive option. Carrick is that player for me, such a intelligent player. Beyond that I'm happy for Jones to fill in and learn the position.

I want a box-to-box player, someone like Essien in his prime I guess. Not sure if there's many of those types out there though.

I do think people are over playing the need for a defensive option though.

Not really. I'd rather sign someone in the Sahin mould, e.g. for £10-20m, but on wages that are probably somewhere in between £60-80k a week (and a few years younger than Modric as well). In fact I do not really understand why we don't seem inquire about Sahin, he has tremendous potential and might be leaving the Bernabeu in the summer (though admittedly only on loan).

Wasn't he injured for most of last season? That could be your answer.

We need an established player who can step in. Modric will (if he signs) come in and do exactly whay he does at Spurs, only in a better side.

People suggesting he's average and asking "what does he do" don't know their arse from their elbow in my opinion. He's been key to what Spurs have done over the last few years.

He does the simple things very well, keeps the ball moving and gets them onto the front foot. Hence why he's so highly rated by people in the game. What he does looks easy, but not a lot of players can do it as well as he can.

Haven't been following this at all. Is there any substance to the rumours?

I wouldn't be surprised if Modric had agreed that if Spurs didn't qualify for the CL he could leave. Seems Suprs may also need the cash after not qualifying and it might allow them to keep other players. They'd also perhaps prefer to see him join United than Chelsea?

They may have leardned their lesson regarding selling players late in the window as well - leaves little time to replace them.

Will retain judgment unless I see him in a United shirt but I could see it happening.

Agree totally. He's a very good player but if getting him stops us from getting cover for Carrick, i wouldnt want him. Really think that after adding Kagawa to our offensive options, we can do without a Modric but what we really need is someone who can cover for Carrick and play alongside him.
Who is that player? Not saying he doesn't exist, just I don't know who would sit well alongside but also be the same if carrick was missing?
Stroke an maybe? Anyone who's seen him regularly got a view.
Btw, I really like the idea of Modric alongside carrick in the two in a 4231 it looks like we are going towards.
With kagawa off Rooney reckon teams would struggle to get the ball off us and we'd have the players to make it count.
Also, most of our games the onus is on us so to me a side without a more defence-minded holding midfielder - a concern for some - is fine.
However, if we ever needed one, which is not often, could tunnicliffe be that man in the next year-18 months and be given the chance to stake a claim?
Like the look of him from what I've seen.

EDIT - Above should be Strootman. Typed on my iPhone and it auto-corrected to Stroke.

If we do get Modric we should bloody hire Spurs' scouts, we'd have saved ourselves a fecking fortune!

Martinez  And I know its highly unlikely.

Sahin would be another great bet. Havent seen much of M'Villa but from what i hear about him, seems another one in a similar mould.

And who's the player you intended to name in the bolded part?

Nuri Sahin, Javi Martinez, Yann M'Vila, Fellaini, Schweinsteiger, Ever Banega, to name but a few. Any of those would be perfect to play next to Carrick in a 4-2-3-1. That type of player is all we lack for that formation to be really effective for us, it fits perfectly the type of players we have already. Just that one signing imo could turn us very quickly into a great side.

Sahin for me if i had to pick one!

Are people still trying to judge Modric based on his goalscoring?

As an aside, despite the fact that scoring goals isn't his job, his goalscoring record throughout his career is better than Xabi Alonso's or Carrick's for example.

The role of a deep lying playmaker is not to score goals.

The Sun seems very confident that a deal as been done. Then again it is the Sun.

Yeah, a lot of people are clueless about his role it seems.

I think everyone is well aware of the in's and out's of Modric since he's been playing here a long time. If people want to criticise his goalscoring, then fair enough. People have been saying we need goals from midfield for a long time, so obviously Modric isn't the player those people would choose.

Carrick and Modric in the centre would be interesting with Kagawa further forward behind Rooney...

I'd still worry about us a little without the ball mind.

I feel our back four is just too easy to get at sometimes.

Just seen that, sadly nothing concrete to the article but thats to be expected really. I would be delighted if we sign him but I dont really see it happening. On the other hand spurs knows he wants out, maybe time for them to cash in on him now.

It was last season, for a whole host of reasons. But I honestly think playing a different system to 4-4-2 will hugely improve that, regardless of who we bring in.

The player I'd love for us to sign is Martinez, but I don't think thats foreseeable?

If Modric is a available for £25M then I guess it's hard not to take it, even though he's not really the right age for a United signing.

The sun talk shit but shouldn't automatically be ignored, it's not uncommon for clubs, teams, managers to offer stories to newspapers in return for favourable coverage of certain things.

The whole British press is now reporting that it's certain he's off to OT.
Unlike other rumours I get the feeling there's some truth in this one.

I think he's exactly the type of midfielder the fans have been crying out for, a creative player who knows how to keep possession, especially in tight spaces.

I think The Sun just saw Gail Platt walking around Manchester and put two and two together.

 Everytime I see Modric now, I'll think of Gail Platt and vice-versa.

The trouble is, our newspapers basically concocted a whole transfer saga with Sneijder just last summer. The deal was always 'going to be concluded by the end of the week' etc. yet that was never the case. I just think they may be attempting the same thing again, as I'm sure it was good for their sales/hits.
