Luka Modric / Signs for Real Madrid

Spanish press are saying the Real Madrid offer was £30m (about 38m Euros) with no add-ons.

Spurs are apparently still asking for 44m Euros + add-ons that would take it over the 50m mark.

I don't think Modric is worth the sort of money Spurs are asking. Can understand Real not wanting to pay it. If Levy pulls this off we should get him to negotiate transfers for us.

It's time for us to make a sneaky bid of £19.99 bid and we'll throw in Phelan's shorts..

It's actually quite frustrating knowing that he's RIGHT THERE for the taking but the price is just too high. He's even being made to train alone at the minute, according to the Mail.

He's not right there.

As far as I understand it, he has very little interest in joining us and Spurs have very little interest in selling to a Premier League club.

Yeah, I doubt we haven't shown interest, it was probably just dead in the water as soon as we inquired. Levy won't sell to us and Modric seems more interested in staying in London or moving abroad.

If Real get Witsel where does this leave Modric....surely he can't stay at Spurs?

Unless he goes on strike, he may have no choice but to play another season there. Levy seems like just the sort of stubborn bastard to cut his nose off to spite his face.

This should serve as a lesson to other players, not to sign a 6 year deal at clubs you have no serious intention of staying at.

I'm sort of edging towards thinking 'fair play Levy'...

It'd probably be better for football if more chairman were tight arse, stubborn arseholes.

He's looking for last year's money for this year's player, that will make negotiating difficult for him, but I think he will move in the end.

The interesting thing - from a neutral perspective - would be if Spurs hang onto Modric. I suspect Modric will knuckle down and play for pride, but whether he can play well in front of a negative crowd I'm not so sure.

I reckon he'll also be getting himself a new agent and some good legal advice in anticipation of threatening to use the Webster ruling next year. Which then opens the question of what fee will be derived through arbitration and whether the big clubs are still united against benefiting from its use. OK, so that's at least one hypothetical too far :D

Personally I reckon if they keep him he'll get the dog's abuse from the fans, will get really depressed about that, and will be available in January.

Wouldn't be surprised if he went for 25-30m, as it's precisely what he's worth.

Can't believe they've let him go for that when they know we'd always pay more than anyone else.

Maybe we may end up getting RVP at a knock down price because no one else want's him?

Except we have no interest in Modric, because SAF sees midfielders as the devil incarnate.

I refuse to believe that they only payed £25m ! Either Modric was dead set on leaving for Madrid, or Spurs simply demanded a much higher fee from any other English club who might've shown an interest.

Probably both.

Levy would rather sell to Madrid for a few million less than sell to any English club.

I also don't think any English club actually bid for him either, did they?

There should be some kind of infraction introduced for posting Sportsmail Reporter stories.

Modric was quite set on going to Madrid as soon they started sniffing.

Yep, bit like Fabregas and Barcelona. Get him for cheaper than he's possibly worth because they know that they want out and that they're the only club they want to go to.

It makes sense that he'd rather sell abroad, though £25m for such a great player seems like such a steal in todays market. Didnt Chelsea pay a similar amount for Oscar?

Well, if he was dead set on going to Real then I dont think any other English club would've bothered putting in a bid, but I'm certain that Chelsea were heavily linked with him with a much higher price tag last summer? Anyways, shame that he's leaving the country as he's a great player. Would've loved to see him in a United-jersey if £25m was all we would've payed for him.

the rich get richer...barca and madrid turn heads like no other club on the planet and cause targets to throw up strops at their current clubs like none other.

the scent of their fanny batter is too irresistible to a footballer.

So? Ronaldo was set on leaving for Madrid too but that didnt stop us getting what he was worth

Well he was the best player at the Olympics, looks a bit of a steal himself.

Pft, Ronaldo was worth £200m!!

I really dont know how we managed to get that much for a player that seemed so determined of going to Real when you think about the Cesc-saga though. A part of me feels like Real wanted to show their strenght, thus breaking a record and getting the best player in the world (at that time). Even though £80m somehow seems like a steal these days, it was probably a sign of strenght rather then just trying to get that certain player.

I dont know about that. I would think that a player like Modric, who are one of the best midfielders in the league, would demand a higher transfer fee then someone who've played in the Brazilian league all their life. Obviously Oscar is very talented, and age/potential is a factor, but a part of me still feels it's wrong. I'm sure both clubs are more then happy with their purchase though, so who am I to complain :p

£25m is a great deal

25 mill + wages say 150K / week minimum, for 5 years

total £64 mill + agents fee and other add-ons.

if he stays to end of contract he will be worth practically nothing ---- you think thats a good deal? Not for me he is good but not that good.

For one so incredibly adept at making the right decision, his choice of signing a new 6-year contract with Spurs has to go down as one of the dumbest decisions known throughout humanity. You're not really allowed to moan for two years about wanting out, straight after signing a new deal with a club lasting that fecking long.

Well you can't pay him in magic fecking beans can you? Every footballer gets paid and if you get Modric for 5-7 years performing the way he can, its a good deal. How much would you pay for him?

If rumors are correct, Levy just wanted him to sign so they can negotiate a better deal when they off load him next season, while Modric also gets a higher salary, it was a win-win situation from his point of view... Clearly it's back fired if they sold him for 25m because I'm quite sure Levy wanted at minimun 40m pounds for Modric.

Much lower fee than I expected he would go for, if true.

He's probably worth around 25M, but there's no way Levy would have sold him to us, or any other EPL for anything under 35-40M.
