Luka Modric / Signs for Real Madrid

That's an excellent deal for Madrid considering they normally have no qualms over paying for players and he has four years left on his contract.

We probably knew he had his mind set on Madrid from the start so didn't waste our time.

It will rise to £27.5M It was only ever goign to be £30M at most in the 1st place.

So no biggie.

We never had a chance with him so I have no idea why some are moaning we did not match.

Some have this retarded idea that signing players is an easy thing and can be done with a click of a button.

From the looks of things Spurs were waiting on bids from us and Chelsea so that they could start a bidding war to get more off Madrid, but that didn't happen, and now they're having to take what Madrid offer.

madrid are bigger and richer yet in the market they get better prices many a time than utd do.

ozil, khedira, higuain, sahin, modric all fall in this category.

even ronnie was a bargain.

we need to do a better job in getting into a player's head early on like we did for kagawa. the evidence is there to see.

It's a good deal and a fair price, obviously Levy took the drop in fee rather than flog him within the Prem. Spurs will probably go and grab Moutinho now and we will remain the only club amongst the top ones to seemingly have no interest in strengthening an area we are weak in.

well we could at least offer the same amount (or a couple of mil extra) so spurs accept the deal. Modric can then choose who he wants - although Levy may then refuse to let him go abroad unless Real match our bid.

Spurs would probably do the same as Arsenal, claim that they're our rivals and try to sell him abroad. Which unlike with RVP, Spurs can and are doing

Spurs only had half a leg to stand on after they pissed Modric off with the broken promises he talked about last year and making him play for them last season. He isnt going to care if they get no value at all, so he can just demand a transfer to Madrid and no other clubs will matter. Normally a player wouldnt really want to see his former team get ripped off, but if you piss him off and force him to stay when he's unhappy, what do you expect

Didn't Modric make a "promise" of his own when he signed a big fat new contract?

I don't think that's a good deal for Spurs at all. £23m doesnt' get you much nowadays and they have to replace Modric (unless that's Gilfi) and but a couple of forwards.

I say let the bellend rest on the bench. It never ceases to escape me the stupidity of penning these years worth of contracts and then pushin the toys out because your unhappy and refusing to play. You should have thought that through a little harder. 4 years left on his current contract ! Levy's right not to accept any less that his asking price this year.

The alleged version of events is he signed a contract because Levy promised he would let him go if Madrid came in and having four years left on the contract would help Spurs get a good price as well.

Then he AND his agents are feckin muppets ! Don't you think they should have penned that into the contract before it was signed? Don't you think they would have inserted it into the contract had that statement been true ? Seem's a bit fishy to me

Is the price of this deal confirmed or is it still speculation?

My personal belief is Levy did make this promise (Modric and his agent have both claimed he did) and was always going to live up to his word and sell. He was just holding out trying to get a good deal, probably looking to take it up to deadline day. The danger was if Madrid genuinely lost interest and decided to look elsewhere, he would then be left with a very unhappy player. Madrid were wise to all of this since the agent probably kept telling them about the promise Levy made and how he's just trying to act tough. They put in one last take it or leave it offer which caused Levy to cave.

That is my version of events based on nothing but tabloid speculation and my imagination.

At the time he signed the contract Real Madrid had no interest in him at all.

You don't know that. It's possible they were sounding his agent out for a move in the future.

But I guess it was more of a "if a big Spanish club comes in for you, we'll listen to offers" sort of thing.

Don't think the fee is that surprising. That's around the price of Toure, Nasri, Silva, Mata etc. Do people think he's a lot more valuable than these players?

He had two mediocre seasons with Spurs - that's what he was happy to sign a long term deal. One good season later and he wants out.

Got to say that the price really surprises me. I actually think it's a decent price and that he doesn't warrant a lot more than that, although Levy usually pushes for as much as he can and won't always like to settle for a lot less, like he has done in this case.

It obviously shows how unhappy Modric is though that they felt they had to get rid of him for a price that was respectable but less than they wanted to sell him for.

Value

Madrid & Barca are absolutely ruthless in the transfer market (with the exception of the odd superstar signing). I guess it helps that just about every non-English player "dreams" of playing for them.

SSN: flying to Spain tomorrow. Fee is about £23.5 million + £3.9 million add ons

That's the "SSN understands" fee. Don't confuse it with the actual fee.

How do I know the two are not the same? In the same way that I knew before today that a deal had been done (and no, once again, it's not me that's "ITK").

Will the true figure be disclosed? Probably not, at least not by Spurs until the window is closed ... for obvious reasons.

'How much?'

For some reason I think Madrid disclose all fees. I am probably completely wrong.

There's nothing stopping you telling us the 'real' fee.

23 million pounds, that's around 30 million Euros. About right for Modric. I'd be shocked if he cost anywhere near as much as Fabregas. I better don't ask what Redcafe folks think he should actually cost if they rate Song around 30 million pounds though.

I will tell you that, not including the very substantial add-ons, the fee is higher than the total figure given by SSN including their add-ons.
